i was looking at a few hydro setups, and i decided to make a water culture system outof my small aquarium.
now from what i understand, you fill the aquarium with water, put a good airstone in there connected to an airpump, and let the roots of the plant hang down into the oxygenated water. of course there's a lot more to it, but thats the basics.
now that brings me to my question. what's a good medium for that kind of setup?
thoughts that came to mind were marbles or small clean aquarium rocks.
i'm just asking for general advice for this kind of hydroponics. i've never done this before and i really want to start.

Sounds like you want to do dwc or bubblers bucket style. 8 bucks at the hydro store will get you the black bucket with a lid to get you started. Without ferts-$40 will get you started and you want have to ruin your fish bowl and a lot less trouble and work. I think BelowMe has a thread going on here on the subject......Read

i found that thread and read it.
after doing more research, i think i want to start off just doing one plant. so what would be a good system setup for one plant? i read somewhere on this site that someone made a simple hydro bubbler system out of a small container, enough for one plant.
can someone point me in the right direction here? i've never done hydroponics before, and i am really interested. i have some good strains this season, and i'd love to make one of them hydro.

The bucket bubbler is the cheapest and one of the best out there. There is also the wick system but it is nothing like the buckets. Do some research. Most anything else starts costing a good bit of money. I have triied most systems and am doing flood and drain now. The bucket is the easiest to learn and mantain and also the cheapest. Good luck.

Here is what you will need Steve.
3 or 5 gallon bucket from Home Depot Black Spray paint for plastic A 36 inch flexible bubble bar (coil it up like a stove element in the bottom) A dual outlet Airpump a STRONG one and a line T so you can use Both lines to the same bubble bar to get more flow. A hole saw for your bucket lid that matches the diameter of the net pot you plan on using Hydroton, perlite or lava rock Dyna Grow nutes, Cheap and easy to use for a newbie A TDS meter and a PH test kit or meter I recomend starting this plant from seed as well.
The black paint is to paint the outside of your bucket to keep light from penetrating the plastic and causing algae problems.
Sounds like a pain in the ass and it may be but it is very well worth it in the end.
PS
When you buy your bucket get three lids and a box set of hole saws. This way you can make a cloner with 10 2" net pots, a single plant system with a 5" inch net pot or a three 3" net pot set up. This wil ofer you some versatility.
This can also be done with a small tote from wally world or Home Depot or wherever. The flex bubble bar is a must in my opinion because it sinks itself and gives good flow and more bubbles. If you use a tote get the 48" or 72" bubble bar and a larger air pump.
I am starting a hydro design shop soon and wil be building custom systems of many kinds. ( About two three months maybe sooner) I will be building everything from True Aeroponic systems to Hybrids of many variations. I have my SUPER DUPER REDUNDANT KICK ASS SYSTEM designed already. It may be a bit pricy for some but a serious grower will appreciate it that is for sure.
FUCK I am rambling again LOL!!!!

awesome dude. do you have any current grows?
neobud
Yeah I have 4 growing right now. 1 In an Aeroponic bucket and the other 3 in soil. I am waiting for Spring to buy all of the materials to build my Aeroponic System that I designed. Then I will be all Aero indoor and all soil outdoor. Well I will keep my mothers in soil for clones. I am just a bit aprehensive about posting pics on here. I am going to post them when the grow is completed.
