ok well I've grown outdors before but I always wanted to grow inside the house but is to cheap to go out and buy a lighting set up well I found an old ass spot light I'm guessing from the 70s-early 80s well what I want to know is if it is a metal hilade or high pressure sodium or possibly something else ok this is what it looks like its a coil ballast with nothing written on it exept for 40 rec on the plasic spools holding the copper wire. it has a 1 1/2 inch socket for the bulb it all fits in a galvinized case and on the back of the case is a plastic case the size of the lid on a can of spray paint that holds what I think is a thermostat on the plastic case it says area lighting research, inc. hackettstown n.junder that it has a 5 I think the serial number is lc-120 it also says 120 vac and 1000 watt tungsten.

no dates on that piece, Tyco bought that company, and it sounds like its either a streetspot lamp, or a spotlamp for military that used for guard posts etc. I can not see the parts, so its hard to detail what you have. I do not know those serial numbers etc.... you either need to post a pic or look in a book that describes what you have.
I do not know about using any of those parts, you must test them very well, make sure they are not broken in any way, also it may only be compatiable with that application.
No way of knowing if its HID, I wouljd say yes though, but exactly MH or HPS, I can not answer that question.
Is it bigger then a Q beam

No dates on the piece. Its a street spotlight. its a little bigger than a q beam. The outside case is the same shape but imagine a wider handle with a place to attach it on the end. If this is a mh ballast could I use it for hps or viseversa
Wild Bill
Does it look like any of these? http://www.lightmartinc.com/flood.html

ok people I need some guesses I want a lightbulb to put in it. is it mh hps. if you are going to gues tell me as a pecent like 40%hps 60%mh
Herbsparky
LOL...a guess is a guess my friend. No matter what percentage you place upon it. ;) Spend some money and get yourself something you KNOW is gonna do the job.

If the balast says that 1000 watt tungsten then that makes it a ballast for a tungsten bulb.they don't try to fool you when they stamp labels on electronic parts I would scrap it, if you try to use it for an hps or metal halide it will probly just ruin your bulb or worst case burn down your huose.
I have never even read about anyone using tungston lights for growing they are typicly used for like stage(like where actors stand) lighting
