I'm attempting my first grow and considering a screen of green (SCRoG) setup. It seems pretty easy to do, and it's supposed to increase yield quite a bit, by creating more bud spots.
I just wanted to know how many of you have tried it or heard about it, and how effective you think it is versus standard, obstruction free growing?

i ran a scrog when i grew. I like it alot, and next time i have a safe place to grow i will do another scrog. What i liked about it was that i could keep plant numbers down and fill a big space. Also when i trained it well, all the budsites saw more or less the same amount of light. There werent any hidden budsites down low that didnt develop. Plus training the plant and timing the switch to 12/12 is a bit of an art, and it helps a ton to know how much the plants going to stretch in the begining of flower. You dont want to train the screen until its full then switch, or you'll have a jungle. and you defintily dont want to switch early and have the plant not stretch much and leave a bunch of empty spaces. once you know the strain its alot easier to time

Hmm I didn't know it was that tricky. It's White Widow, and I knew someone on OG doing a SCRoG with WW and I was going to ask him for pointers.
For a SCRoG, is it important to train the plants before they meet the screen? I haven't looked into training much but I think it just has to do with tying down stems and stuff to encourage more horizontal growth or discourage vertical growth.
But otherwise I don't know when the hell to start the screen/how high to place it above them or even when to switch to 12/12. It's difficult being a first time grower because you have to rely a lot on other, more experienced people. You can read FAQs and stuff but they only tell you so much and often don't go into the details that you need.
Thanks for your input though, hopefully OG will be back up soon because they had some good FAQs and like I said, a user that was willing to help me with my WW SCRoG.

i grew my plants from seed, and didnt start training until i knew their sex. After i found the females, i would pinch the main stem about 7 inches up and the rest of the plant would flop over. Thats where i mounted the screen. I had chicken wire, and wove the plant through the screen as it grew. From clone though, you can start training much earlier, and probably keep the screen lower. A good rule of thumb for flipping over to 12/12 is when the screen is half filled. Some sativas will still outgrow that, and some indicas wont fill it, but its a good baseline. Once you know the strain better you can flip to 12/12 when you know she needs it.
Basically i just kept my plant below the screen as much as possible, weaving it into the empty spots as it grew. And when i switched to 12/12 i removed all the growth below the screen too. good luck man

Scrog is unnecessary. You can obtain the same effect through Fimming and a couple of bread ties for any over-zealous shoots to level the canopy. Fimming is clipping 3/4 of the mini-bud(un-opened leaf set) developing within the apex of the top true leaves. Toe nail clippers work beautiful for the procedure and plants develope up to 6 or 7 heads at an equal height, leaving no wasteful gaps in the canopy, thus utilizing light efficiently.

I've done a scrog and I think Scrog is great!
I have a big dirt box I grow in under a 1000 watt HPS. They grow to 16 inches before they get to the screen.
As Smotpoker said, knowing the growth pattern of the strain is important.
I have my screen at 16 inches, because of the growth pattern of the strains I have. 16 inches and the stalks are fat and they are close to maturity.
Fat stalk means better fluid movement imo and close to maturity means established branches that sport better vegetation for training.
So anyway I hope this reply adds...

It's work till it's all set up the way you like then it's real easy. So training and super cropping take time but once it's done the rest is water and wait.
And like Snow owl says there are other ways. I like Scrog myself so maybe try it and try the Fimming and LST..
One of the next grow styles I want to try is single cola grow.

I do a lot of SCROG grows.....just harvested one 2 days ago....I normally SCROG under a single 400HPS...up to 6 plants with approx 50 days veg time....yield is in the range of 250 grams....But, the last one was with 800 watts....I had some serious expectations but yield was quite low...about 300 grams....there were a couple of reasons for this...most notably was a reduced veg time, but I find that SCROG is more effective and controlable with lower lighting applications...IE 400 watts or less. With larger grows, ventilation becomes an issue due to so much vegetation in a purposely cramped area....powdery mildew and mold to some degree are almost a foregone certainty...so be careful when considering a larger SCROG style grow

i like the scrog because i can level the canopy without fimming or topping. The most pain i unleash on my plants is a supercrop. Another thing i dig about the scrog is that it enables me to grow in small spaces that i wouldnt be able to grow in otherwise. I've had a plant and a 400w hps in a 2x2x4 ft box and it worked great, i even had to prop my planter on an 8" box to get it closer to the light

I have done 2 scrogs in the past in DWC growing skunk #1. The yeild was pretty good and it was very interesting to do but took alot of time training. Its great if you have limited height to work with. Started from seed and had the screen set 14 inches above the net pot. Vegged until it reached the screen. Turned light back to 12 hours and then spent like and hour or two every day until finished training it. Would have been cool if that was the only plant i had at the time but got to be a bit much for me at the time.
