I have a new plant that has just started growing. I have heard that it is best to top the plant after the first two sets of "Five Fingered Leaves" are visible. This is susposed to make the plant grow short and bushy. Is there any truth to this? Or is this only a myth. Pappy, sure would love to hear from you on this one.
hi stray, dont top your plants until 1 week before flowering (Edited by alz at 4:12 pm on June 20, 2005)
I disagree with alz. It is true if you top your plant it stays shorter & bushier. I usually let my plant get about 3 or 4 nodes & then top them. And then it grows 2 instead of 1. Let those grow a couple of nodes & then top them.
never top your plants during flowering period and if you want a bushy plant it can also depend on genitics like look at these in this picture look all the way to the left this tall plant was toped and this one wasent and here is a shot of the stems of the un toped one they did the oppisite of what i thought i thought it would be the other way around so it has allot to do with genitics as well but i repeat i would never top your plant during flower
Any plant is has the potential to get "bushy", it all depends on conditions such as light intesity. The more light that is distributed throughout the plant evenly, the more bushier the plant will get. That is why outdoor plants grow so bushy with many budsites. Yes genetics have a part in it, but it really all comes down the conditions that the plant has lived through. But i definitly agree on the type of genetics, it does count. ok light source=legthy plants Good light source=bushy compacted plants remember that topping your plant will give you more buds sites, but smaller buds. To me it is stupid to top your plant, because it can decrease yieilds by having thinner/smaller buds. Stick with "au naturel" and you will always be happy!! and if you wanna do some training along the way go for it, its easy as pie...just try not to focus on topping plants to make them bushier...there are many other methods to use to make your plant anyhting you disire...short and studdy, tall and legnthy, even tall AND bushy...all it takes is some training, not nessisarly prunning. Then again...its what i think (Edited by Danno33 at 1:30 am on June 20, 2005)
To be honest I do not top my plants. Pruning and topping are two different things entirely. I'd follow the advice already given and use the search feature at the top to look up jogging. My voice is only one of many around here and an opinion at best. What I'll say is that cutting the top off a plant is not something I have ever been happy with doing. For pics on pruning have a look at this thread....http://forum.growkind.com/forum/topic.php?forum=3;topic=7702
