I have heard rumors that Hermie plants make feminized seeds. I am weary to believe that but if it were true, that would mean my seedling "should" be female. I read about male bananas making fem seeds through rodelization (sp). Does the banana pollen have to be used on a separate plant or will the seeds from the banana producing plant also be feminized? So, just exactly how are feminized seeds created? Been wondering for a while, I don't think it's common knowledge but maybe thats just something I never happened to read about before.... So, wanna help me out guys? Thanks buddies!
I have a friend who works in plant genetics so I gave him a ring (also a chronic cultivator.) Anyways he said the method still varies among breeders and its very difficult. They take female clones and use some kind of chemicals to cause them to produce pollen, then they use those pollen producing females to polinate regular females creating femenized seeds. He didnt know what kind of chemicals off the top of his head though.
Yeah thats what I just was reading about. The chemical is gibberellic acid. They take the acid and use it on plants to induce hermies through stress. It's better to use female plants who would normally not hermie unless really stressed (thats where the acid comes in) and then they take the pollen from those hermied plants and fertilize other non-hermie female plants. The resulting seeds should have no male chromosome. Though if ya think about all this in it's rawest form, it would seem that seeds from regular old hermie seeds "should" have a higher chance of being female because there is less Male chromosome possibilities, though, those regular hermie seed females would have a higher chance of going hermie eventually. Thats why they use the acid to induce hermies instead of regular hermies. But in the end, they are still the same thing, female chromosome plants producing pollen. So both would have a higer chance of making feminized seeds. Cept with the acid, you have less chance of producing feminized seeds that will naturally go hermie. it's late, I hope that made sense. I was basicly answering my own question. Shoulda done more reading before I posted. But thanks rational :qbluewacko:
hahaha its ok, I've asked questions before reading a few times (with stuff that could be found in the FAQ section:eusa_shifty but its all good. Nice research, I was really interested in the science behind it also On a side note, I love the advice you give and the things I learn from you (a bit creepy I know, hahaha) But I mean it in the friendliest way possible, lots of wisdom spread around hereottytrain1: Makes me really happy when I look like this >>>
Aww thank you, you are sweet Thanks for the smile :icon_flower: And don't worry, I still look like this a lot too
"female plants are created by pollintating a female pant with the pollen from a reverse-gender female plant." Luc of Paradise Seeds, High Times (June 2007, page 53).
How Feminized seeds are made... :evil4: During the 1st 2 weeks of bloom cycle: set the timer>>> 12 hrs light, 5 1/2 hours dark, 1 hour light, then 5 1/2 hours dark again...repeat for 2 weekz. The 1hour of interrrupted darkness triggers some hermaphrodism. After 2 weeks...set the cycle back to 12/12. Congratulations! You now will have feminized seeds without the need for hormones like ethylene! A seedbank from Europe uses this method successfully! These feminized beans do have a higher chance of hermies....but only if you REALLY stress them. But if you treat 'em right...the feminized beans will not go hermie! Enjoy! :icon_bounce: :angel8:
very interesting yeah thats some cool stuff Im definately going to try that. I set up another room in my garage Im using for selective breeding, definately going to give femenized light trick a try!
OK, Plain n simple now! A HERMAPHRODITE and a FEMALE pollinated by a HERMIE, should Produce FEMALE seeds, that it. (FULL STOP!) Peace CG, UrBigBuddie....... otleaf: P.S, The Triggering of the light cysle's, are just to get the stressed female to turn HERMIE, thats all...Nothing more or less, just that! Then that HERMIE is got a hold of, and then Placed next to a TRUE FEMALE plant, and Bow WoW, in a short time,>>> "BOB's yer Uncle", there ya have it, FEMALE SEEDS!!!:sign13:  PEACE!
Making your plants hermie is a short cut to fem seeds,NOT the proper method.... Yeah but hold on a minute here, aint selling genetically induced hermies as feminised seeds a lil bit shady:eusa_shifty: If we are paying top dollar for feminised seeds then surely the least we should expect is for them to have been put through the proper process.I intend opening a local seedshop seeing its perfectly legal here of course and although it'll be mostly me selling other breeders and sedbanks strains i hope in time to come to sell mny own strains and i wanna do it properly, making your plant a hermie CAN produce fem seeds BUT it also means that every seed will carry a higher percentage of the hermie gene, this is more of a short cut.A lot more than that goes into making a stable and reliable feminised strain that can withstand the vigours of more than 4-5 grows, etc. Shame Duffman or Skunky or Useless aint around?DAMN,never find them guys when we need them, lol, put it this way,and i aint saying anyone is wrong, but if all you have to do to create feminised seeds of a half decent quality is make your plant turn hermie then no one would ever need to buy feminsed seeds. I KNOW THIS DOES AND CAN WORK,but its not the preferred or proper method amongst Dutch Seedbreeders.I'd love this thread to go on and hear more methods cos all and any info helps me in my quest.Iv started a 'how to make fem seeds' thread in the STRAINS section and SOMA explains how he does it in an interview he did with high times.Cheers
Found this posted by SOMA in HIGHTIMES Story by Soma Creating feminized cannabis seeds is an art. Just like art, there are a few different methods of application. I have written about some of my different methods of making seeds in previous HIGH TIMES articles. I have used gibberellic acid, pH stress, light stress, and fertilizer stress to force my female plants to make seeds. All of these methods are harsh on the plants, and some, like the gibberellic acid, are not organic. In my search for cleaner, more earth-friendly ways of working with the cannabis plant, I have found a new way to make feminized seeds. Feminized seeds occur as a result of stress, rather than genetics. All cannabis plants can and will make male flowers under stress. Certain strains like a higher pH, some a lower one. Some like a lot of food, some like much less. There is quite a lot of variety in marijuana genetics, and you can’t treat every plant the same way. It takes many harvests before you really get to know a particular strain. Just like getting to know human friends, it takes time. I have grown the same strains for close to a decade, and am truly getting to know every nuance the different plants exhibit. I can recognize them from a distance. I must say that I get a lot of help from my friends, both in making seeds and in learning new and better ways of working with this sacred plant. I named this new method "Rodelization," after a friend who helped me realize and make use of this way of creating female seeds. After growing crop after crop of the same plants in the same conditions, I noticed that if I flowered the plants 10-14 days longer than usual, they would develop male "bananas." A male banana is a very slight male flower on a female marijuana plant that is formed because of stress. Usually they do not let out any pollen early enough to make seeds, but they sometimes do. They are a built-in safety factor so that in case of severe conditions, the plant can make sure the species is furthered. To me, a male banana is quite a beautiful thing. It has the potential of making all female seeds. Many growers out there have male-banana phobia. They see one and have heart palpitations, they want to cut down the entire crop, or at the very least take tweezers and pluck the little yellow emergency devices out. I call them "emergency devices" because they emerge at times of stress. In the Rodelization method, the male banana is very valuable. After growing your female plants 10-14 days longer than usual, hang them up to dry, then carefully take them off the drying lines and inspect for bananas. Each and every banana should be removed, and placed in a small bag labeled very accurately. These sealed bags can be placed in the fridge for one or two months and still remain potent. For the next phase, you need to have a separate crop that’s already 2 1/2 weeks into flowering. Take your sealed bags of pollen out of the fridge, and proceed to impregnate your new crop of females. To do this, you must first match the female plant and the pollen from the same strain in the previous crop. Shut all the fans in the growroom down. Then take a very fine paintbrush, dip it in the bag of pollen, and paint it on the female flower. Do this to each different strain you have growing together. I have done it with up to 10 different kinds in the same room with great success. I use the lower flowers to make seeds, leaving the top colas seedless for smoking. This method takes time (two crops), but is completely organic, and lets you have great-quality smoke at the same time you make your female seeds. If you’re one of those growers who’s never grown seeds for fear of not having something good to smoke, you will love this method. You can also use this pollen to make new female crosses by cross-pollinating. The older females with the male bananas can be brought into the room with the younger, unpollinated females after they are three weeks into flowering. Turn all of the circulation fans on high, and the little bits of pollen will proceed to make it around the room. Do this for several days. Six to seven weeks later, you will have ripe 100% feminized seeds; not nearly as many as a male plant would make, but enough to start over somewhere else with the same genetics. As a farmer who has been forced to move his genetics far away from where they started, I know very well the value of seeds. My friend Adam from ThSeeds in Amsterdam has a motto that I love to borrow these days: Drop seeds not bombs
I like Soma's Way Better.... Great Post! I never made feminized beans before...thank u for shedding a lot of Light on the Matter! Cheerz! :iamwithstupid:
Im really trying to digest all the info im reading and try put it into practice. Its a subject im trying my best to learn, i aint no skunky ,duffman or a Useless when it comes to the botanical side of MJ plants but i have learned a lot from their posts, like Useless recently talked about polypoidism in MJ and how rare it was, after some research iv found out there is a way to MAKE your plant polypoid, theirs a type of light bulb you can buy from garden centres and if you breqak it theres some sort of chemical in it that CAN make your plant or at least increase its chances of polypoidism....theres a bit more to the process than that but just an example... This thread has increased my interest in making and how to make fem seeds properly as in stabilised seeds and to do that you need to grow them out a few times to test the vigour for example. My dream of opening my own seed shop aint a hard one to achieve, its all finance basically for the shop lease in the city which wont be a problem,i also have half decent contacts, basically theres a LOT of scotish guys in Amsterdam who run the cafes and help in the running of seedbanks or know seedbreeders so getting seedbreeders and banks to give me their seeeds to sell shouldnt be much of a problem either,im vending for them therefore making them money,etc... BUT i wanna start my own lil seed outfit but THIS is the bit of the dream that poses the most problems cos i aint no professional when it comes to breeding quality, potent and STABLE strains aswell as creating proper fem seeds,i mean sure you can hermie a plant and grow females from the seeds, etc but you also run the risk a grow or two down the line of more and more hermies appearing instead of females cos they will forever carry a higher percentage of the hermie gene.Iv done a lot of reading on this topic over the past year and SOMA is just one of the 'pro' breeders who i respect and try to learn from, another legend is The F Dutchman:notworthy: My trip to Amsterdam at easter didnt materialise due to my mrs being pregnant and seriously ill at the same time but my birthdays coming up on 28th and its a holiday weekend in scotland so i might try shuttle over to the 'Dam for a birthday treat and try make sure some old aquaintances are still there,iv been offered lots of help, even another brit from another forum has offered me different genetics,etc... ....iv already got a pretty good collection of seeds/strains and me and UrBigBuddie have messed around with crossing strains,we used blueberry a few times mostly just cos it worked better than others we messed around with but this subject is now something im taking very seriously,if i ever wanna get 'Apprentice Tartan Seeds UK' off the ground then i better stop procrastinating and start putting my theory/knowledge into actual practice:5eek:. I'd love to hear some of our knowlegable GKers views on making fem seeds, how many of y'all have created feminised seeds that are stable and vigirousAnd what was your method or what in your opinions is THEE optimum method for making stable feminised seedsMy quest/dream continues, lol.Cheersotleaf:
Producing Female Seeds... Heres a method of making feminised seeds taken fromThe Cannabis Growers Bible by Greg Green which is freely available online.Cheers Producing Female Seeds If it were possible to know which seeds are female and which are male, marijuana growing would be even simpler than it is. There is not practical way to discern the gender of a seed - but there is a simpler procedure for producing seeds that will all grow into female plants. To produce feminized seeds, the plants are fertilised with pollen with male flowers that appear on a basically female plant. Such flowers appear on intersexes, reversed females, and hermaphrodites Female plants have an XX complement of sex chromosomes; therefore, the pollen from the male flowers that form on female plants can only carry an X chromosome. All seeds produced from flowers fertilised with this "female" pollen will thus have an XX pair of sex chromosomes, which is the female genotype. Although the male Cannabis plant can produce female flowers, it cannot produce seed; so there is no chance of mistakenly producing seed on a male plant. It is possible to use pollen from an intersexual plant that is basically male (XY); the resulting crop of seeds will have the normal 1:1 ratio of males to females. For this reason, choose a plant that is distinctly female as a pollen source. A female plant with a few random male-flower clusters, or a female plant that has reversed sex are both good pollen sources. The seed bearer can be any female, female intersex, or reversed-female plant. In most crops, careful inspection of all the females usually reveals a few male flowers. And often, when females are left flowering for an extended period of time, some male flowers will develop. If no male flowers form, you can help to induce male flowers on female plants by severe pruning. One such procedure is to take the bulk of the harvest, but to leave behind some green leaves to maintain growth Most of the plants will continue to form female flowers, but male flowers are also likely to form. At times, the plants may not grow particularly well, and may in fact form distorted and twisted leaves, but they will produce viable seeds as long as some stigmas were white when pollinated. (Remember, it only takes a few fertile buds to produce hundreds of seeds.) Pollinate the female flowers by hand as soon as pollen becomes available. A solitary male flower on a female plant provides "female" pollen.Growth may not be vigorous, but seeds will form if stigmas are white when pollinated. Under artificial lights, turn the light cycle down to eight hours after cutting the plants back. The short cycle helps to induce male flowers on female plants. Male-free seed can also be produced by pollen from a natural hermaphrodites. The progeny, however, may inherit the hermaphroditic trait, resulting in a crop with some hermaphrodites as well as females. This could be a problem if you want to grow sinsemilla the next crop.
Apprentice...when can I be one of your 1st customers? I personally would rather purchase beans from a respected grower than from someone/or company I'm not familiar with. Maybe you should test trial a "mock" website...and accept orders via paypal or google checkout or somethin'....I can be one of your 1st customers! I also believe that you and your associates have produced some unique strains already that can't be found anywhere else! That would be cool to also market some "growkind" strains fer sale! It's not hard for me to Imagine your seedbank...from dream to reality! Hell, Look @Soma...that's one crazy looking cat....and I ordered NYCD from him! I ordered from BadAssBuds successfully before...so I know that it's possible for you to make your niche! Peace Apprentice! :iamwithstupid:
"I have a dream........." The seedshop getting leased and opened and fully stocked with breeders and banks strains is the easy part. Its the ability to competently cross, breed and make fem seeds and kick ass STABLE strains thats the only thing that holds me back,i refuse to enter things half heartedly so i wanna know my shit before i invest me and my familias money into such a venture. Iv got X strains that between me and other local cultivators iv produced but making PROPER fem seeds is my top priority.Check my profile on here for my msn and yahoo handles, add me up and maybe chat about itPeace EDIT:I do have a great collection of genetics, pollen and fem seeds,i just need to know what im doin inside out i cant take shortcuts, etc.NOT WHEN ITS NOT ALL MY CASH ON THE LINE. BUT,if theirs some Apprentice Tartan Seeds being tried out then i'll holla at you the details, damn id love to do a strain called GrowKind#1!
TRUE,Verey TRUE! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ As i said, Make YOUR FEMALE plant stress out, with a flipped Lighting cycle and Bobs yer Uncle, there ya have t! (LIke 12/12 it till female, then 6/18 it, then 3/21 it, 14/10 it, then 7/17 and MIX it up till its HERMIE'D and so on and so on..ya get me all now then??? ....lol PEACE! Done n Said!^^^^^ As clearly stated before, "ABOVE"! (STRESS YOUR FEMALE):sign13: Thats it people! SIMPLE enough for us all! Peace all, UBB........ otleaf: P.S, The Pollen on the Then FEMALE turned HERMIE, ( Because of the light cycle stress, which hepl's then produce lil BALLS too, that will open UP, which will then pollinate the SENSIMELLIA from the pollen sacks produced from STRESSING the TRUE FEMALE plant, and then there ya go,:sign13: The SEEDS that will become, will be FEMALE!!!:sign13: Thats how it DONE!!! PEACE ALL!
I think URBIGBUDDIE is onto sumthin' I've been rereadin' this thread and this is what UBBIGBUDDIE advice is: 1)Manipulate the lighting cycle enough to turn a female into a hermie[urBigBuddie]. 2)Use the pollen from that hermie and pollinate A DIFFERENT FEMALE; it could be from the same harvest or save the pollen for the next batch of females comin' next harves[soma] Abracadabra! Your beans will be feminized and you'll isolate the hermie trait(dormancy). This Kush is makin' me really retarded so correct me if i'm wrong guyz. Apprentice-I'm amazed by your integrity. I'm defininitely gonna buy feminized from you next time....peace! :iamwithstupid:
