I have access to some of the typical style 2.5qt, 2gal, 3gal, and 5gal nursery pots. The basic black flimsy plastic. Thing is, the 5gal(I think they're 5, might be a bit more, I'll check). Are no taller than the 2 or 3 gallon pots, just larger circumference. I was thinking of using some Home Depot buckets for my 5 gallon pots, ya know drilling plenty of drain holes in the bottom, so that there was more space between them, and the roots could have more depth. I guess, the real question is, what is the perfect ratio? I know a 5gal bucket that's 2" tall wouldn't be ideal, and neither would a 5gal bucket that's 24" tall. What's ideal? I've never used 5 gal other than one time for a plant that went outside and never got any attention. I've always thought those 3.Xgal nursery pots had the perfect ratio, maybe I could just measure them and get the right ratio of circumference to height. SERious Ak-47 is what's going in them. Thanks for your input guys.
I use 5 gallon Buckets and drill drain holes in the bottom. I say go for the Home Depot Buckets... I went to a local Chinese restaurant and asked for their empty soy sauce buckets... now every time I go to eat there they give me 3 or 4...
I know a guy that uses standard 5 gallon buckets, with soil indoors. He says to nest them, in pairs, the top bucket has drainage holes the bottom bucket remains in tact as your drip pan. Takes 2x the buckets but it sounded really easy and practical. I've always read that MJ prefers a deep narow pot to a short wide one because it wants to send it's rood deep. Best of luck and let us know how it works out:thumbs-up: Grat
Free is the best. i use standard 5 gal. buckets too. Mine had pickle chips in them. Delis and all manner of restaurants buy ingredients in 5 gal buckets and are happy to give them away. :beerchug-2: asssit: :thumbs-up:
The homedepot type pots hold around 7gal of soil. I have 5gal black containers from the hydro store, they hold 5gal or less soil. In my area it's easy to get free 5gal containers, from landscapers, after they've planted. They just throw them away, they are kinda flimsy though. I have 3AK close to 2 weeks of 12/12, all in HD 7gal buckets(orange). They are awesome plants!
Just to be different...... I actually use 20L buckets. I gotta bunch surplus for one of my side hustles. Paint them up funky and stick them around the yard like art. asssit: Just remember to put about 2- 4" of rocks or peanuts or whatever wrapped up in weed barrier in the bottom for drainage.
Yeah I can get literally HUNDREDS of every size from 2.5qt to those that look like little children's pools. They used to put trees in them or something. The thing is, like Grat was saying, they grow in diameter faster than they do in height, that was what I was worried about. It just didn't seem right.
I've always had a little fantasy idea of taking of the largest nursery pot.[at least the largest one's I've seen, from this place that's closing] Filling the pot full of soil, probably would take three or four bags. Possibly putting in some organic solid ferts that needed time to breakdown. All the while, vegging a clone of a bitchin female indoors from January till August, THEN putting it outside, and letting it finish off with the HIGH temps being at most 15* higher than what i grew up in, and the lowest being 15* lower. Basically all I'm saying is I've always wanted to grow a fuckin TREE. I'll probably never do it though... Anyway, back to what this post is about. I'm going to probably use the Home Depot style buckets,[not that they have to be home depot brand] and make for plenty of easy drainage. The 3.17gal(.17 i think is what it has imprinted) flimsy plastic pots that I've used are about the same circumference as the home depot's, the home depot's are just deeper. I think I'll see great results from this especially using AK-47. My ak-47 seeds are 8 of 11 cracked open showing tails so far after 36 hours. I've heard this strain can and will yield nicely. I'm vegging until they're 2ft+ tall, so I expect the home depot buckets will supply plenty. I'm probably filling the bottom 1-2" with hydroton or something similar. =D. ANd of course, I do a 33% mix of LARGE perlite in my soil. Might go with medium this time though. These large perlite's I have are the size of a damn pee or been, fucking huge.
Stuck On You THATS FINE UNTIL THEY GET STUCK TOGETHER THEN THEY ARE ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO GET APART i use square 4.7 gallon containers THEY FIT TOGETHER CLOSER 12 INCHES SQUARE THE SAM DIAMITER AS A 3 GAL BUCKET
