Light leaks

I have one room with a sealed veg box on one side and a flower spot on the other side.

I put a new 4" air duct line in between my veg 400w MH sealed hood light and the can fan. The duct was from the hydro shop with the black stuff in side to keep light leaks out, but I got a small blue glow showing thru the duct on the outside of the veg box

Is a light leak like this something to be worried about with the flowering plants in the 12 hr dark period in the same room?

Yes a light leak into your dark cycle will cause issues.... Possible hermie... Stress.. etc

I've built two setups with veg rooms next to flower rooms sharing ducting. PITA but it's gotta be NO light.

I don't think just a little faint glow is the end of the world. Pitch black would be nice but that's just this side of impossible. I've always heard unless it's a direct light and it's less than moon light not to worry too much. I've also heard that if you can make out the shape of the leaves it's too much and can cause hermies.

Ive had open 6"holes between walls and the polyshield Styrofoam with one silver side one white side lets a glow through so my whole wall glowed and I've never had an issue.

I looked at it tonight in the dark and it's a low glow, looks like a soft blue moon light. I can't believe they sell the stuff as light proof and it doesn't work, so I am going to go back and complain, it is like a garbage bag lined air duct, and the silver part out side is all most transparent, hell my dryer hose would work better, but it is easy to poke hole's in that stuff, it's more brittle.

Then I also noticed there is a light leak on the back of the sealed hood where the light socket fits into the hood. I don't know how I am going to seal that, maybe I can use foam?

This sucks, I was all excited to put in my new MH bulb and new air duct and then this....:icon_confused:

I have noticed the duct-work with the black plastic outside leaks light quite badly..on the other hand the duct-work with the silver lining on the outside is lightproof....

I ran into the same problem and just wrapped the duct-work with a black trash bag and its all good..

and aluminum foil tape is great for sealing light leaks as well....rub it in..the pressure makes it stick...

Hey Max! Where you been? Yeah, it's like they used silver windo tint with see thru back plastic in the inside, makes for a nice window shade probably...:roffl:

Don't worry about a slight leak in the hood... As when lights are out there is no light leak from the hood...

Unless you like hermies, it has to be pitch black. Screw what happens outside with moonlight, street lights, car lights, etc. You are inside so you can control the environment. So control it. When I build a room I have someone seal me in it with lights off and wait 15 minutes for your my to adjust and then PLUG ALL LIGHT LEAKS DURING LIGHTS OFF. An hour of prevention is worth a pound of unwanted hermie seeds.

As I said hermies can happen... Why chance it.... I second what FF says. I did same thing when I finished my closet....

Why I always use either the aluminized or most the time use insulated ducting. The insulation also acts as a muffler.

Perfectly dark with every pin hole sealed would be nice but I've had small leaks and haven't had a hermie in 8 years.

The light does leak out the back of the hood where the light socket fits in, so maybe I will wrap it with something that won't melt, but it doesn't get that hot anyways. I didn't get a chance to get with the hydro shop today but tomorrow I will, if they won't replace the duct, I will rap some black plastic on it, it's only about a 6" piece. but when I use the rest of it in my garage project it won't mater since there won't be any plants but what's in the box.

It's always something with new grow set up's, never had one I built where something didn't need to be fixed.

CG I think that's the exception rather than the rule.

Now we KNOW that total darkness doesn't encourage hermies, and we KNOW that light leaks during night cycles has caused hermies, so why risk it? Why not spend a little time and err on the side of caution? If you're going to make an error, it might as well be the error of too much caution, rather than not enough.

    My tools for light proofing:

Gorilla duct tape, black. Totally light proof.

    Panda film.

Sticky-back foil tape as mentioned above. Make sure you get the foil with the removable backing. It looks similar to other foil-type tapes and I have bought the wrong stuff twice by accident. :bong-2: But the stuff you want has a wax paper backing that peels off revealing high-temp glue.

    Wide black velcro.

Black spray paint for the inside of rigid ducting, inside of light-proof vents, etc.

That gives me a great Idea with the panda film and the black tape, I have both, and the foil duct tape.

The insulated duct is a great idea, I didn't even think about it and I have some. Got a friend who can get me like 10' pieces for free off job sites. I am going to use some to T off the laundry room to my flower box in the garage.

Besides getting hermies, can a light leak cause flowering plants to take longer to flower?

i think ive touched on this before..however....(indoor) marijuana that is not used to the weird planting under street lights or crap like that that get (suddenly) introduced to a light leak will behave bad...but..(if) the leak was there from day one...guess what?..... most hybrids wont hermi....yup...i said it....ive grown thousands of plants....(my) experience has shown a small light leak from electronic stuff from day one wont hinder most hybrids...an un-expected leak that pops up...WILL mess with stuff...not too bad if it was always there...tape off all the control lights and corners...edges....go in with lights out and see.....but....ill end with its the (sudden) exposure that will damage yer plants reg growth..not really so much the leak...prolly sounds off..but its true....peace.

The black gorilla tape worked wonders on the back of the light hood, and also some smaller crack's I had by the wall where the box was butted up to. That tape is expensive so I wont wrap it around the air duct, I will probably use the insulated duct like Skunky was talking about, since I have it and it's free and then cuts down on the sound of the fan.....COOL

Pretty much with wwboy on this.

I've done the total blackout room grow and, the garage with more holes than swiss cheese grow. Any appreciable difference, I didn't notice. As long as it's constant.....doesn't seem to be that big a deal. Especially more so with regular house lighting. Plants could give two shits. Maybe if you have beams of MH from the next room or whatever.... IDK.

Eh, I think the whole light trap thing is a bit anal...WTF do I know? Haven't had a hermie since 2002, and they were herm beans off jump (much to my pissed offedness). I guess in this day of $100pr/10 seeds better safe than sorry but, I don't ascribe to that.

You guys think that these giant production warehouses and greenhouses don't get light on the dark cycle??? c'mon man.

Anyway, this is just my opinion. Don't taze me bro. :roffl:

Yup I'm with you, I had some branches that were shaded from my supplemental lighting in the greenhouse start to flower and I had 9 house light floro's going. Just being shaded won't make it completely dark and they didn't care.
