Taft Union High School Teacher, Campus Supervisor 'Talked Down' Shooter, Deputy Says

By TRACIE CONE 01/10/13 09:34 PM ET EST

TAFT, Calif. — A 16-year-old student armed with a shotgun walked into a rural California high school on Thursday, shot one student and fired at others and missed before a teacher and another staff member talked him into surrendering, officials said.

The teen victim was in critical but stable condition, and the suspect, whose pockets were stuffed with ammunition, was still being interrogated, Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said at a news conference Thursday evening.

The suspect used a shotgun that belonged to his brother and went to bed Wednesday night with a plan to shoot two fellow students, Youngblood said.

Surveillance video shows the alleged shooter trying to conceal the gun as he nervously entered Taft Union High School through a side entrance after school had started Thursday morning.

When the shots were fired, teacher Ryan Heber tried to get the more than two dozen students out a back door and engaged the shooter in conversation to distract him, Youngblood said. Campus supervisor Kim Lee Fields responded to a call of shots fired and also began talking to the teen.

"They talked him into putting that shotgun down. He in fact told the teacher, `I don't want to shoot you,' and named the person that he wanted to shoot," Youngblood said.

"The heroics of these two people goes without saying. ... They could have just as easily ... tried to get out of the classroom and left students, and they didn't," the sheriff said. "They knew not to let him leave the classroom with that shotgun."

The shooter didn't show up for first period, then interrupted the class of 28 students.

Youngblood said the suspect alleges the two students he targeted had bullied him for more than a year, but the sheriff couldn't confirm the allegations.

"Certainly he believed that the two people he targeted had bullied him, in his mind. Whether that occurred or not we don't know yet," Youngblood said.

Youngblood did not release the student's disciplinary record, saying he didn't have it.

The shotgun is believed to belong to the boy's brother and was in the boy's home, Youngblood said.

The Sheriff's Department did not release the boy's name because he was a juvenile and had yet to be charged. But many students and community members said they knew the boy and said he was often teased, including Alex Patterson, 18, who went to Taft with the suspect before graduating last year.

"He comes off as the kind of kid who would do something like this," Patterson said. "He talked about it a lot, but nobody thought he would."

Trish Montes, who lived next door to the suspect, said he was "a short guy" and "small" who was teased about his stature by many, including the victim.

"Maybe people will learn not to bully people," Montes said. "I hate to be crappy about it, but that kid was bullying him."

Montes said her son had worked at the school and tutored the boy last year, sometimes walking with him between classes because he felt sorry for him.

"All I ever heard about him was good things from my son," Montes said. "He wasn't Mr. Popularity, but he was a smart kid. It's a shame. My kid said he was like a genius. It's a shame because he could have made something of himself."

The wounded student was flown to a hospital in Bakersfield and was listed in stable but critical condition Thursday evening. Officials said a female student was hospitalized with possible hearing damage because the shotgun was fired close to her ear, and another girl suffered minor injuries during the scramble to flee when she fell over a table.

Officials said there's usually an armed officer on campus, but the person wasn't there because he was snowed in. Taft police officers arrived within 60 seconds of first reports.

Bakersfield television station KERO reported receiving phone calls from people inside the school who hid in closets. About 900 students are enrolled at the high school, which includes ninth through 12th grades.

Wilhelmina Reum, whose daughter Alexis Singleton is a fourth-grader at a nearby elementary school, got word of the attack while she was about 35 miles away in Bakersfield and immediately sped back to Taft.

"I just kept thinking this can't be happening in my little town," she told The Associated Press.

"I was afraid I was going to get hurt," Alexis said. "I just wanted my mom to get here so I could go home."

Taft is a community of fewer than 10,000 people amid oil and natural gas production fields about 120 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

The attack there came less than a month after a gunman massacred 20 children and six women at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., then killed himself.

That shooting prompted President Barack Obama to promise new efforts to curb gun violence. Vice President Joe Biden, who was placed in charge of the initiative, said he would deliver new policy proposals to the president by next week.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said in a statement that her father had attended Taft Union and she has visited the school over the years.

"At this moment my thoughts and prayers are with the victims, and I wish them a speedy recovery," Feinstein said. "But how many more shootings must there be in America before we come to the realization that guns and grievances do not belong together?"

    Thank God it wasn't worse.

I think we need to stop celebrating violence, as a culture. Who knows about the causes of this shooting. But in general I think we should more consciously denounce violence. Maybe it sounds too corny, but man I have three little girls who I pack off to public school every day. They are more precious to me than any thing else.

But I think it shoots a hole in the theory that if only we banned certain guns this wouldn't happen...12 gauge was used.

But it seems this kid wasn't nuts, just pissed....thus the minimal loss of life....which I'm sure doesn't make it any better for the families

Except for the fact that no one died and the shooter could only get off a few shots because it was a shotgun and not an assault weapon.......

    Did you read the story?!?!?!?!?!

And are you seriously saying that a rifle is more deadly than a 12 gauge at point blank range? Seriously??

He wasn't there but to kill specific people, because he was pissed at them, not at the world. You should really read the story.

Frankly I'm just amazed by the fact that someone would suggest being shot at point blank range with a shotgun isn't as deadly as with a rifle.

Do you have any science or experience at all that would suggest something so counter intuitive as that? really....I amazed by that comment....I think anyone in their right mind would prefer a rifle to a shotgun blast....amazing

What I am saying is you can kill more people with an assault rifle than a shotgun. Obviously the range didn't matter here because the people are still alive.

What I am saying is he was only there to kill certain people!!!!! Just like he said!!!!

If he had a AR he still would have only shot who he shot.

And yes range is a big factor with shotguns....pretty big factor actually. The kid is lucky to be alive. Prob game load is the only thing that saved his life. Close up with a rifle is less likely to kill you as it's more likely to be an "in and out" .....it's when the round tumbles you get fucked....close up to much speed unless it hits bone. Shotguns direct opposite...thus everyone using them for self defense

That's what's goofy 'bout the mass executioners using semi auto assault style weaponry. It's probably the least effective for their twisted purpose. Give me a couple old 10 or a newer 12 gauge semi autos and I'll clear a room in seconds. It's point and shoot with wide margin for error vs aim and pull with little margin for error.

Frightens me to think of what will happen if assault style gets banned and the real crazies start using the correct gear. I'd much rather have some nutjob coming at me shooting wildly with a rifle than a shotgun.

If shotguns were that easy, we wouldn't have adults missing skeet at boy scout camp. Rounds per minute creates mass shootings. Basic hunting weapons limit the mass casualties, despite what one shooter said their motive was.

If you take someone with no gun experience and give them an assault weapon versus a basic 12 gauge, they are probably going to, first, hurt their shoulder, and hit a lot more RANDOM shit with the AR.

40 yards at a fast moving small target vs 20 feet at a large slow moving target. Bet the same shooter would NEVER hit that same clay with a rifle. In confined areas it's simpler to load point and fire a scatter gun with a larger kill zone than it is most assault style rifles.

Actual rounds per minute are virtually identical for an average shooter. An extended tube gets me 10 shots as fast I can pull a trigger. If you use 00 loads that's 8-10 8.4mm pellets with each trigger pull. 10 trigger pulls puts the equivalent of 80-100 9 mm rounds from a rifle or handgun into play within ten seconds.

Good point, RR. I'd much rather have someone gunnin' for me with an AR15 than a shotgun any day!

I don't want to get shot by anything...but there's a big problem this even happens.

It really does go down mental health...bullying in this case same as Columbine.

I have young children, I would never what this, we live in a fucked up society....but we have the right to leave whenever we want. You gotta take the good with the bad. I love America, even with it's flaws.....but we have to start looking at mental health in this country, espec for the young adults out there.

But yea close quarters 00 is the way to go. Rifles are better long range, faster firing doesn't matter as you miss more the faster you go.

My biggest complaint about mag ban that's prob coming is Mags suck to load. Takes 5 minutes to fire in 10 sec. Exagerated of course but you know what I am saying.

But I don't want any rifle or assualt weapon ban.

People need to have common sense when it comes to this....not knee jerk reactions

Well i play modernwarfare3 (therefore gun expeert:razz3: )and a semi auto shotgun like the striker suck ass compared to assault rifles, not just for range but accuracy, mobility and reload speed, etc. But then again my experience IS limited to a PS3 game:rofl6: In MY world and i HAVE seen 12gauges being used back home but never assault rifles in my life have i seen. But i would IMAGINE,as deadly as a shotgun is,.Arw we talking SEMI auto assault rifles or FULLY auto, cos in MW3 or black ops 2 i can clear a room with a fully auto AR if i know where each target will be then i can plan my bullet useage so i can clear the room without reloading but the shotguns are always a pain in the ass, even the semi auto's can you can only fire off so many rounds, etc.Again,im not even going direction of gun debates with guys who use them.Just bullshitting but my point is they DO try make these games as accurate as possible(recoil, mag capacity, etc) and while i love nothing more than close quarter combat at a flag point with a shotgun, pump action or semi auto.I'd still rayher approach the targets with a fully auto AR and enter the killzone with a full clip. What do i know i play online games lol but i DO remember posting on here a while back about how Al Quaida were using call of duty as a training game:roll: Im drinking....ignore ALL of the above. I suppose like anything else it depends on the model and ammo your using, etc:ponder:

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say that if you banned certain types of guns you would eliminate school shootings. Nobody thinks you can eliminate guns or shootings 100%. The point is to try and reduce them as much as possible.

that isnt entirely true. even with a 30 round mag a 7 +1 remington 870 has a 3 foot spread at 15 yards and buckshot will take down... a buck. in iraq they would go house to house with pistols and a shotgun. the reason being the length of the barrel on a m4 even though shorter than an m16, greatly hinders its killing power. a shotgun will always be much more lethal than an assault rifle indoors. in a classroom, its no contest you can cover the entire room in seconds with about 5 rounds. i dont think the casualties were high in this incident because he was aiming for two people whereas he could have done serious damage aiming for a crowd.

    applepoop911 Self-Sucker

jesus christ lol. in most cases a pistol is better than an assault rifle indoors. a shotgun isnt even a contest. throw in the fact that you can get 3 inch magnum rounds and 3.5 inch super magnums where as the civilian bushmasters/ colts/ ar family are limited to nato rounds and even weaker the .223

Can you provide one link or quote from anyone saying that if certain types of guns were banned school shootings would cease 100%? I highly doubt it. Seems like you are misrepresenting the position of gun control advocates.
