Just seeing if there's anyone else that plays the bass, electric or acoustic. I've been at it for a few months now. I played the trumpet for a few decades, but always wanted to learn guitar so I bought an Ibanez GSR 200. My fingers just don't get along with six strings. Four big fat strings seem to be okay. Love playing blues.
I've played guitar for a while, self taught, and love the blues too. Just tell me what key you're in and I'm with ya. Justcheckingitout it the guitar man here. He plays that head banging shit:guitar7::roffl: His bass player is just like his brother, JCIO fixes him up with the "good" shit.:kidding: If it's got bugs or cat hair in it he fixes him right up.:roffl: But playing music is a great release. That's the biggest reason I played. When you're jammin' the rest of the fucked up world goes away for a while. Now some like the formentioned got into it for the women. Nothing like the ten at two's :bootyshake:fighting to see who gets to take you to her place for an unforgettable evening:dom:. Luckily you won't be able to remember it next day.:roffl: You know I'm just fucking with ya JCIO!!! Be Cool, CG
Cool, another Trumpet player ! I played for 16 years as well. Also a quite ordinary Piano player and always wanted to learn acoustic Guitar. Been playing about 18 months now and having a lot of fun with it. BBT
If you like the guitar stick with it, i can tell you that guitar players get way more chicks than the bass players :coolbounce: It just takes more practice to get going. But if the bass suits you better go for it. Playing a insturment is great no mater what it is. I have been in bands that went places, still going places... and some of us are doing a three day show with 50 bands next month and its going to be a big one. We have our own staging gear, our own video/recording producer, promoter and PR (public relations) guys and stage manager and alot of other people doing work on this show. All sorts of contracts f around. FF and I were talking about doing a GK theme song, him on banjo, me on guitar and you could throw in some bass if you can make it happen possibly and we can get some other guys here to throw stuff in also. There is so much to do with music but the actual fun is on stage, i have done raido interviews and had my kids there listening at home and by the time they made it to school they were the talk of the school, everyone wanted to ride on the tour buss. :not-worthy: going to stores with my kids and having people come up for autographs makes my kids think i am santa clause:bravo: at bars/clubs i sign more boobs than any other musician i know. Its my forte to speak of. Its a lot of fun. Just a few things to think about on the good side of the music industry. Practice, practice, practice and practice more. There are alot of online learning tools to help. And save your self alot of time if your looking to start a band. Choose guys that got pro gear, their own ride and dont bitch, whine, complain, and cry over shit. Thats the main part of getting a band together, like being married. Will be bad times but will be alot if good times. Probably more info than you were looking for this soon but you get my drift. If you have any questions let me know.
Now listen to a story bout a man named Jed, poor mountaineer barely kep his family fed :roffl: Then one day he was huntin up some food, when out of the ground came the source of all doobs! Weed that is. Texas Tea. Green Gold.
I'm happily married so I'm not really looking to get chicks. I think the bass suits me better. I practice about an hour a day and a few hours at work on Sundays. The guy I work with at my second job is a guitar guitar player so we jam when there's no one in the store. My youngest daughter plays the piano and trumpet. Music transcends age and gives us an opportunity to bond and learn from each other. She learned about Dizzy Gillespi and I learned about Iggy Azelia. I've been stone cold sober for a couple weeks now waiting to see if I got this promotion (and a drug test) so playing my bass til my fingers hurt has given me a little outlet from reality much like weed does.
If you get enjoyment out of it, its a good thing. Playing with different people is a great learning experience and alot of good times. I would not be a kick ass gun slinger without learning from other guitarist i have played with. Learning how to sharpen picks on carpet, stretching guitat strings tricks, i have learned stuff thats not in books. you will learn something new all the time. I love it.
$50 an hour for lessons made me cringe, but my sister charges twice that much as a voice coach in Frisco. Every time I go in I think I'm spending too much, but by the end of the hour I'm doing things I didn't think I could do. I wish this guy would work for bud, but as luck would have it, I picked the on instructor that doesn't like weed.
That's how I started. I think a personal teacher is worth the money to point out things he sees wrong.
Usually a drummer but I'd been known to pick up a bass now and then. Wasn't 'til about 10 years ago, I had some medical issues and couldn't play drums, I started to take it more seriously. Had already been playing my Les Paul through an Ampeg bass rig in a few bands at that point and, I loved the sludgie tone so I figured, no brainer, let's give this bass thing a shot. While I'm certainly no Yngwie Malmsteen on guitar, I can hold my own end on chords and the occasional lead so I thought bass was gonna be a cakewalk... My girlfriend, who is a trained bass player, "gifted" me her old Washburn 4-string (in reality, this was code for "Honey, I need money for a new bass...) and I started going to town on it. Well...that was a mistake. I have always played flatwounds (again, I like that sludge). Even the Teisco with the whammy bar I had as kid 25 years ago had flatwounds. The occasional bass gig here or there was no big deal but, practicing everyday for a week and a half tore my fingers up...... Gave it a week or so before I picked it up again. Anyway, long story short, over the course of that next year, with the help of bass tabs, my girl and, my experience with the downbeat, I learned Led Zepplin, Grand Funk Railroad and Clutch's entire catalog. Looking back at it now, workers comp, pain meds and booze probably helped. :roffl: It's nice to see folks try different instruments, as long as you're committed to whichever one that may be at the time. JCIO pretty much nailed the rest of it. The old saying goes with classic rock songs...."if i had a dollar for everytime i played that song". :roffl: There is a raidar love riff in that tab also if you play the second part slow. Its bike week where i live now. Daytona beach. Classic rock everywhere. I have played everything from Ac/Dc to ZZ Top. Even the dreeded "tom petty". Oh God kill me know i hate last dance with mary jane....i loved old tom petty "refugee". I refused to play "Mustang sally". Got cussed and almost in a fight because i wouldnt play it at bike week showes. I am a heavy metal guitarist by nature, just played the classic stuff at bike week gigs and biker bars and 1% bike clubs houses. (That can be rough). But put it all together and its one hell of a time. Best is playing Rock/metal stuff at the strip clubs with naked girls on stage. I would play the bass on one song "comfortable numb" (pink floyd) while the bass player played keybord, just that one song played 4 times a week would chew my fingers up. Us guitar players love our fingers, i dont know how bass players do it all night with out a pick
AH come on man, I've played Last dance a thousand times:roffl:. A couple guys I jammed with loved it so? Told them I wasn't singing it except some back up in the chorus. And Mustang Sally a thousand and ten times:roffl:. It's pretty simple to play so it wasn't beyond anybody who came over to jam and I would sing it. I had a music room setup and had old friends come over on weekends to party and jam. Had the regulars and who ever was back in town and wanted to sit in. It was a blast. Probably gona curl your toes but used to play a shit load of Neil Young which I had to sing cause nobody else to sing that high. And a lot of Blues, it is simple to play and most can be played in whatever key fits your voice. And had a buddy that came I once a month or so that was a great harp player. Be Cool, CG
Neil's "Rockin' in the free world" was a pretty good song to play. Then crank up the distortion and "Hey hey, my my" . And all you had to do for a lead was find any note in the scale of E minor and bang and bend the hell out of it until it busted then go to the next one.:roffl: And loved the Talking Heads!! "Life during war time' was fun and fairly easy. It's hard to play the 'Heads' and do it justice! Be Cool, CG
