I have never grown seeds from bagseed before. I actually don't have much seed experience at all i was lucky enough to be taken under the wing of another grower. So i started with clones from the gate. Anyways I decided in a stoned state one night that i wanted to buy an oz of middies collect some of the seeds and start a batch. I consumed half the zone after 14 seeds were extracted. I took the other half and put it in a humidor of sorts. So the plan is to grow out these babes and see if what i grow is better than what i originally obtained. I have always been under the impression that bagseed was herm by nature so i never bothered. I have been reading more and more about it on multiple forums and it seems that the probability of getting herms is there but a viable fem can be obtained. I dunno i germed 14 , 12 of which popped 2 were meant for disaster so i plucked them to reuse the rapid rooters. Basically the method i follow is paper towel germ--> rapid rooters in darkness for 2 days flip on the floro's which are 8 65 watt equiv cfl's 6500k. i run 18/6 cycle. All of which is under the humidity dome cept for an hour or so a day. Then i transplanted them into 16 oz. cups FF Ocean mixed with perlite. So they are on their way. Let us see what happens... I can't wait to see the side by side comparison. Later Skaters DSP first few days taken 4/25
they are quite stretchy they did this in the first 2 days when there was no light present. I have since learned that seeds don't need darkness after they germ? Like i said i don't normally do seeds i have seen it done but i'm more of the clone master general. They have since stopped the stretch and are growing out their leaves. The Cfl's are about 4 inches away. Thank you for the comment tho i appreciate it. DSP
Just an update. I harvested on yesterday so the bagseed babies are now under the 400w HPS. I also started nutes the other day. I use 50% of the recommended dose on FF grow big and big bloom. I buffer the PH back up to 7.02 in the mix. I use advanced nutes ph up and down since it and GH is the best ph adjusters i have found fuck using those pool chemicals.DSP ps sorry bout the edit i messed up the tag to insert the pic and like a stoner didn't preview my post...
Well it's been about a week and a half so it's update time. I have found some differences between the way clones act and seed. The seed is way more sensitive to nutes. I'm not sure if that is because these are from bagseed and not a bred strain or what but with clones as long as i control the ph they don't mind 50% recommended dose from FF grow big and big bloom. Some of these babies don't mind but others are yellowing but the ph is sittin between 6.2 and 6.9 in all the cups so i don't know. This was just an experiment we shall see what they do in 12/12 next week. The sad part is they may never make it to full bud production. There are going to be clones of an old mommy ak47 plant goin round so pending on how many i get these babies may need to jump ship. On with the pics.
The clones can handle nutes because they are older they are the same age as the mother plant. the plants from seeds don't need nutes till they lose their cotyledon leaves . Graet job on your grow keep up the good work.-Bud
thank you and i was unaware that seedlings didn't need nutes. I'm not sure if i like growing from seed... It's cool seeing it go from seed to baby to seedling but i'm just as happy taking cuttings and lettin em root then putting them in the oven! I might try seeds from a breeder next i'm not sure. thanks for the input! DSP
whats the wattage you got them under?, i noticed some stretch at hte start, but some of em look like and bushy, very compact so far. EDIT: yep 8 65 watt equiv, that would be what like 26 watts actual per light?, total of just over 200?
in the beginning they were under 8 26 watt cfl's. Now they are under a 400w HPS. I think the stretching was because i let them sit in the darkness in a humidity dome for 2 days after germ. Don't ask me why it just seemed like a good idea at the time. Now they are getting robust. One is droopy as can be tho . oh well always a runt in the lot. My question is Is it worth it to transplant them into bigger pots and get the most out of them or flower them early not getting much weight from them just to weed out the males and herms. reveg the fems after they finish flower and let them shine the next go round... since i am new to this seed deal i am at a conundrum. If i was using clones i woulda put them in 1 gallon pots and been on easy street but i'm not so i'm lost... DSP
if you have the space, i would veg them for as long as possible, and then when you throw the flower power on, you will get however many females, but theyll be way big. in this case, and any other, i usually like to suggest to let them get big regardless. but i also wouldnt go into FULL flower, like dont let them finish, just until they start to show sex, 2-3 weeks or so, then put them back to veg, so you can let em get big, and tell the females take clones etc. and have some nice buds.
Sorta depends on your long term plans... So your growing Bag Seed...:qbluewacko: Something I hope never to do again and yet still feel the temptation when I get a good seed in a great bag... Just finished my 4th round of BS about a month ago. Something in the neighborhood of 30 plants (total in 4 rounds, closet/cab grows). I had 2 males and all of the rest were hermies. Some of them didn't show their hermie traits till 5 weeks of 12/12. It was almost like dealing with fem seeds. Everything that sprouted produced bud. I suspect that the 2 males would have produced fem flowers too by the end but I tossed them. What I did with all of mine was pretty much what you say you do with your clones, put them in 2 to 3 gal pots and wait and see, if you wait till they show alternating nodes (on the main stalk, branches don't count) before you flower then you will probably be able to tell the sex in one week but surely by 3 (as stated). Just pull your males and let your ladies thrive. I had (well still do) PLENTY of seeds so no need to clone. Personally, I'm just sick of dealing with hermies. Also the strain/s I've been working with haven't been as potent or high yielding as I'd like. I'm growing "named strains" for the first time and wouldn't want to chance growing out bag seed and having it herm all over my ladies. Also now that I know what genetics I'm working with and thus far have only grown one plant from each of the strains that I have, I'm absolutely cloning. One is a fem seed so no sexing required but the other is ICE (Nirvana Standard), it showed pre-flowers @ about 5wks of veg, way before it hit alternating nodes so I was pretty stoked. Still don't know what my success rate on the clones will be @ 12 days from clipping I haven't lost any...fingers crossed. It's clear to me from watching other ppl grow BS that they are not all hermies but my theory is that if your bag was grown indoors and has seeds then it's probably gonna be a hermie seed/plant. If you got it from an outdoor grow then it is more likely to be a standard sex seed/plant. So the better the bud the more likely it is to be a hermie seed. Just my theory. So what it comes down to is how long you want to work with this strain. If your gonna get some other genetics to work with then just grow it out. If you wanna keep it around just clone the lower branches that you'd prune anyway (label them) and when the moms/dads show toss (or keep) the clones accordingly. As far as I understand there's at LEAST a month of down time involved with the re-veg process. I just realized that all along I've been forgetting the 2 chamber element. Do you have separate veg and flower space? That sorta changes everything. I think I'm just rambling now...sorry if this was annoying (paranoia side of my stone kicking-in)... Best of luck man, may your ladies be true blue! Grat
Huh a reveg after sexing won't that stress em pretty bad? I think i'm goin to just veg em till they are half of what i want them to be then 12/12 yank the dudes. DSP
update well it's time for an update they have been transplanted for about a week or so and just watered. I switched perlite since i didn't have time to go to HTG before repotting so i used some MG perlite i had for houseplants. Now i'm having some ph probs nothing major just some N deficiency. I just watered them with a low ph solution to help we'll see if it does the trick. DSP I think about 2 or 3 more weeks till flower chime in with any comments...
actually wishing for males... i hope atleast 3 of these are males cuz when i flip to flower there ain't gonna be enough room! I'm itching to flower these youngins. The tallest is 12" the shortest is 7". Should i flower in a few days after i take clones or wait a few more weeks let the ppl decide. DSP
Pre-Flowers or Alt Nodes? I'd wait till one or both of the above are visible. Looking good man... Grat
update Everything is going as going goes. I had a little mishap the other day i got caught up last night and didn't have a chance to water them so when i got home this morning they were all drooped out. I watered em down and they are back in action not lookin to worse for wear.
Well 2 opened up their trenchcoat and showed me their balls. So away they go still got 7 left 2 def female and 5 that are undecided yet. I am on day 5 of flower.
I wouldnt risk growing bag seed indoors. I DO grow bag seed but i keep it for my outdoor grows.. I usually dont tend to them like I do my good strains. If veg them briefly indoors and weed out the males, then I put them outside after 6-7 weeks in patches of 5-10. I usually sell all of my bag seed buds. I have found a couple good phenos in bad seed tho
guerilla i live in the heart of a decent sized city in an apt. outside is not an option. Thank you Cpt. and i will grow on. I think next round is gonna be Northern lights from seed get a good NL mom so i can have a batch of clones cooked by 4-20. Anyone know which breeder has the best NL? DSP
