OK, sorry to bring this up again, but i have some questions. I just installed an 8" 500 cfm exhaust fan going out the top of my grow box. My last couple grows just STUNK and it made me paranoid, but nothing could ever be smelled outside. My 4 remaining plants dont stink too much, but i just ordered seeds and I want to be as safe as possible. I am looking to get a "can fan" from worms way, but I have no idea what size to get. Ive heard that the bigger the better when it comes to carbon filters. I dont want to waste money on something that doesnt do ****. And when I have my doors open on my box, wont the smell still drift from the box, or will all go through the ventilation system? I have yet to install the intake but it will be done by the time i get my seeds (im using an oscilating fan for now, my ventilation also cools my light down greatly). Any tips on this would be appreciated, I am done using ionizers in the grow room and ozone kinda freaks me out, i need control! I would hate to freak because my odor control sucks. Please help!

it dont smell anymore cause youve become used to it.
    it still stinks trust me.
theres a thread in the faq about how to make a scrubber bucket. i use one with phenominal results.
youll definetly need one when harvest time comes round.

Are you venting outside? If so, just get an ozone generator... that baby'll make sure the air going outside is odor free. But you don't want to be breathing ozone, so make sure your vents are going outside.

easyiest way to get busted,,,venting outside.
plus its also a doorway for bugs.
can you vent into an attic space or similar?

I vent into the chimney of my house... and the air that comes out is totally odor free. Venting ozonated air into your chimney = easiest way to NOT get busted. If any bug can get through my 250cfm fan, than I don't want to **** with him... but even if he could, Ozone is toxic so he'd die long before he got all the way through the ducting system.

No i dont vent outside, you see, my closet has a smaller section above the big area, its the piece that my light is hanging from. The fan is above the light, cut into the board that seperates the flowering area from that smaller area and it pushes air up into that smaller area. Would that be suffient? I do know that it cools my light off very well, especially with the oscilating fan standing next to the light. I still have yet to install the intake, I think that will get done today or tomorrow. I dont know if i NEED a carbon filter, its a wardrobe closet, im working with 8 square feet and i could fit 4-5 big clones or many more smaller clones in there. But I would rather be safe than sorry. I may run my intake duct from my ac vent, into a side of the box. that wont make it smell outside would it? I did that before and it didnt sneak outside. but im not sure if i want to do it like that anymore. Also, should my intake fan be the same size as my exhaust (the exhaust is 8")? I want to get a certain amount of pressure going through the box. Thanks for any help.

Lol, you had better get a good filter. Trust me, they'll start to stink; especially during flower. Before I had my ozone generator, I could smell my plants outside even though it was venting through the chimney of my house .

Make your intake as big as you can. I just used a 18" square vent from Home Depot and put 3 layers of carbon filter for an air purifier over it to clean the incoming air as well as block light transfer.

well ****...hmm. i went to the grow store earlier and discussed it with a guy and he didnt think i would really need a carbon filter since i am not venting outside or into another room. Damnit, now i am more confused. I know how much it stinks from previous grows. So you are saying I get an 18" square vent and put 3 layers of carbon filter over it? Is that it? Ill get an ozone generator if i must but i would rather not, i already have an ionizer i could put outside the room and around vents. So, what, i put a fan in a duct that leads to the 18" vent? I am really getting confused and frustrated here, its startin to get to me! Please help!

I mean, I dont know if i can vent it to the outside...to another room perhaps? im just so confused [IMG] all i wanna do is continue my joyous hobby with as little paranoia as possible! i suck at these technical things

That is my scrubber. Works excellent. You can get away with making it a little shorter, probably half as high. I bought my carbon off of e-bay, but in light of recent developements I would suggest searching out another vendor. You can also reactivate your used carbon fairly easily. Good luck ZR.

Thank you much. I am not sure where i am gonna put my scrubber, probably just put a hose through my wall to the bathroom closet and put the scrubber in there? Or just next to my box? i am starting to understand more...starfleet, how do you ventilate your system? I have everything ready for my next grow except for that and of course the seeds which i should get in the mail sometime this week. I believe my scrubber is getting built tonight, gettin help from an "old schooler", hopefully all works out. Thank you, an add anything else i may want to know!

I have changed how the inline fan is mounted. Now the fan is mounted directly on top of the scrubber, the hose goes through the wall, and connects to my sungro hood. It accomplish's to missions. One keeping the room cool, and two scrubbing the exhausted air. The reason I switched to mounting the fan on the scrubber is I was getting alot of vibration that I could feel/hear upstairs when the fan was mounted to the wood framed walls. Hope this has helped you Bro.

Holy crap SFC, that's pretty cool . Is that activated carbon in there? Like you would use in a fishtank filter? That's really a great idea... if I wasn't venting out the chimney already and wanted to keep the air in the house that'd be an awesome idea. I'll have to keep that in mind for possible future grow spots.

    8 inch fan??

That will be good for venting the hood + the 6 inch carbon can.

One word of warning do not process ozone filled air through the carbon can because carbon will obsorb ozone and make it useless; unless you need to remove Ozone.

I have an 8 inch fan and a 6 inch can I am thinking of adding a filter between the can and fan since I have all the air flow I could ask for with a 6 inch can.
I noticed I over pulled the can and had to add fluffy filter material to slow the draw.
Some of the configurations I have tried and the simple observations I have made.

    1. 8 inch hurricane is a killer fan.
    2. I can vent a American pride hood and a 6 inch can with the 8 inch hurricane.
    3. the 8 inch alone on the 6 inch can can pull odor right past the carbon. I added filter material around the can to slow the draw.
    4. Carbon is great odor control. I can blow J's all day and it gets sucked up in the carbon.

If I redo my system again, I have a 6 inch on the light and an 8 inch on the can, I might add a passive filtered fresh air inlet to the 8 inch to add fresh air to the cycled inside air and slow the draw on the can and I might add the big blue 4 inch i have to the light so it vents hot ozoned air outside.

I'll try to remember to post what i do this year.

Also a home made bucket or a refilable can are the way to go.
I'm not sure why my local grow shop doesn't know anything about bulk carbon but sells big expensive filters. One thing thing to keep in mind is that any grow shop can be a Cop Shop. But I digress....

Also Dom one of the key Ingredients to the can is good ole panty hose, which if I had to guess you probably already have some.hey maybe you could even model them for us first? No? Carbon scrubbers are IMO the safest scent control option that I have come across, especially if you have kids, and animals. Ozone is bad.

SFC... That's just activated carbon like in a fish tank filter though right? Interestingly enough, I don't have any plain pantyhose, all mine are fishnets ;).

I don't have to worry about hurting anything since I vent through my chimney, not into the house anywhere... but my ozone generator does use electricity, and it'd be nice to cut down on the power bill in any way. Where did you get the plans for your carbon filter? Is there a guide on this site? Please point me in the right direction... maybe I'll post pics of my fishnets if you do.

I found it on overgrow. I will find the link, and post. Yes it is activated coconut carbon. I bought a big office water jug full on e-bay. But I also recently did a searc for bulk activated carbon ,and found some good deals. Get alot the first time, and then chnging after a couple months is hassle free. Then you can recharge it when its conveinient.
