Yes, I’m at it again. And no, this grow isn’t strictly necessary as I have more than enough to last from my recent harvest. What can I say, I’m addicted to growing. This is my 6th grow since I started buying seeds and growing strains with names (too many bagseed grows to count before that). Since I've only been growing with purchased seeds for a short time, I'm still trying to find new and interesting strains. This time it's all new. I’ve never grown any of these strains before: 2 White Label Feminized Pure Power Plant Feminized 2 Female Seeds X-Line C99 Hybrid Feminized 1 Dinafem Seeds Cheese Feminized (freebie) 1 Magus Genetics Warlock Feminized (freebie) As I’ve said before, I’m liking the mixed, hybrid buzz more and more these days (probably something to do with my rapidly advancing age). I expect the C99 to be the most sativa-like, and the rest to be a nice mix of effects. I don’t anticipate any knock-out, couch lock smokes this time around. I also tried to pick strains that will finish about the same time. Looks like these should all finish in less than 9 weeks. I chose the C99 Hybrid based on reports I’ve seen here. Looks promising, although I’m not really sure what to expect. The breeder’s description says the it has 10 different parents, so I should expect some variation. Really? Do you think?!?!? In case you’re interested, one parent line has 75% C99 / 25% Maroc and one parent line is 50% C99 and 50% Nev. Haze. The Cheese is Old School UK Skunk x Afghani, and the others I have no idea about. Should be a very nice variety. Seeds were germinated in paper towels. On the second day all seeds had cracked open and went into soil. After two days in soil (today), all had broken the surface. So this is officially DAY 1. I'll post a detailed description of my set up next, then regular updates as things progress. Please stay tuned.
My Setup Unfortunately, I can't get a good picture of the cabinet, so this 3D rendering will have to do. The space is so narrow I only have about an inch clearance when I open the doors, which means I can't get far enough back to get the whole cabinet in a picture. I'm using a standard double-wide wardrobe, about 48" w x 72" h x 18" d. I left the top shelf in and took out the vertical divider. In the top compartment I have a Panasonic Whisperline 240 CFM fan pulling through a homemade carbon filter. A power strip and the timers are also in the top compartment. I cut a hole in the left side of the shelf for intake from the grow area. In the chamber below I have two darkroom louvres for input on the right side (opposite the exhaust hole in the shelf). For circulation, I have 2 PC fans -- one on the left side blowing upwards, and one blowing on the lights. The entire inside of the grow area is painted flat white. I'm currently using a single 400-w HPS bulb in a Super Sun 2 reflector. I have an EYE Metal Ace MH bulb for veg, and an EYE Hortilux HPS bulb for flower. I have the one PC fan blowing into the right side of the reflector, and some ducting on the left (not shown) taking the air up into the top chamber. The reflector is on chains so I can adjust its height as necessary. That's the ballast sitting on top of the cabinet. I can fit eight 3-gal grow bags in my cabinet, but only have room for about 5-6 mature plants. The bags are sitting on a piece of eggcrate for drainage, and underneath the bags the bottom is lined with a piece of heavy drop-cloth plastic. My medium is organic soil. I started with Fafard's soil in the purple bag, which has no additives. It lists its ingredients as top soil - 75%, compost - 15%, and peat moss - 10%. I like it better than MG organic soil, which is the only other organic soil I can get around here. It is a very rich, dark soil (with no gnats). To it I add perlite (about 5 to 1, soil to perlite), a little vermiculite, bone meal (flower), blood meal, ground egg shell, epsom salts, dolomitic lime, kelp meal, and the dried, ground-up leaves from my previous harvest. The seedling mix, in 16 oz plastic cups, is just straight Fafard's with some perlite added to it. For ferts I'm using General Organics BioThrive for the second time. My last grow I fed pretty heavily with it, and only one strain didn’t particularly like it. So I’ll probably be feeding pretty heavily again, at least until I see how they like it. I also add molasses to my regular water occasionally during veg and about every other watering during flower.
Sweet looking setup. Sweet sounding soil mix. No fucking clue what any of those strains are, but being grown in sweet sweet mother nature mix I'm sure they'll turn out scrumptious. Can't wait to see!
Twins Again! All the years I've been growing, I never saw twins. Now this is the third set in my last 5 grows. This time it's one of the C99. Since I know from experience that the runt will never catch up, I'm going to pluck it. C99 Twins
Update @ Day 14 Day 14 already, hard to believe. Generally speaking, all are looking good. I'm not too sure about the Pure Power Plant though. One has somewhat twisted leaves, but the other looks downright bad. It looks like it's been seriously abused, although it hasn't. I was hoping it would straighten out after the second set of leaves, but it's just not doing much of anything. I'm afraid it's going to be permanently stunted and always a runt. It was the only one NOT root bound when I transplanted. Not sure what, if anything, I can do. And speaking of transplant, that's what I did today. All were just starting to get root bound. Here they are still a little droopy after the trauma. Gave them all a good watering with a bit of molasses to help get things started. (I've been watering the soil in the bags since I started the seeds two weeks ago.) Left rear is Cheese, then the two Power Plant, then the two C99, and the far right front is the Warlock.
Nice looking grow Tony. I am curious, are the double mutants you're getting all coming from femed seeds?
Thanks all. Interesting question. Previous twins were from a Point of No Return regular seed and the other an LA Woman feminized seed. So, two out of three were from feminized seeds.
Update @ Day 22 Nothing too exciting happening. As always, they perked right up and have really started growing after transplanting a week ago. They are all looking really healthy and their growth is right on track. All are very compact and sturdy looking. Except for the one Pure Power Plant, that is. As you can see, the one PPP is growing, putting out new leaves. But it's growing VERY slowly, and new leaves start out yellow and crumpled looking and never really straighten out. It looks like it has multiple deficiencies, but that can't be. It has the same soil as the others, and it's been like this from the beginning. Since I don't have that many plants and I was really looking forward to the PPP, I'll keep it around and see what happens. I figure even if I just get a few scrawny buds off of it, that's better than nothing. Also notice the other PPP has straightened itself out and looks completely normal, with no more twisted or deformed leaves. So I'm pretty happy about that. The only other one that stands out at all is the Warlock. It has super-wide overlapping leaves. A few of those are a bit twisted, but I think it's mainly because they're so wide they're just crowded. Since I'm planning on vegging about 6 weeks (maybe a little longer if I end up with only 5 plants), that means we're already half way there. Please stay tuned.
Looks like it's going to be a full house once things get rolling.. Looks good man. Say, how do you like those bags? I've never used them myself but was thinking that they could be real space savers for those of us a bit tight on space. pulling up a chair & sticking my feet in the air, ready for the show:jj:
Thanks. The bags are GREAT! I used to use 3-gallon buckets, and I could fit 4 in my cabinet. With 3-gal bags, I can fit 8. I've been using them for the past 4-5 grows, and I've only replaced 2 so far. If you're careful (I wasn't at first), they'll last for many, many grows.
They look pretty good Tony. They should start taking off pretty soon. I'm curious about that Cheese. Lots of different Cheese strains floating around now. I have tried a few that were great smoke. Funky smelling buds.asssit:
Update @ Day 30 Notice any difference since last week? Growth is starting to take off. All except for the freak Pure Power Plant that is. It is in fact growing, but is still twisted and discolored. The two C99 are looking pretty much identical so far. Who knows, maybe I got two of the same from out of the who-knows-how-many possible phenos. Looks like these two are going to be the tallest of the group. They look also almost identical to the Cheese, although the Cheese is a bit smaller. The other PPP is also similar looking, but its leaves are a bit narrower and there's a bit of red on its stems. It's about the same height as the Cheese. The Warlock is bringing up the rear height-wise, but leads the pack in leaf width. Here are the two "oddballs" of the group. Surprisingly, the runt PPP has almost as many nodes as the others (one less), but is quite stunted. You can see the discoloration better in this shot. Its leaves look almost variegated. But it's still chugging along, so I'll leave it be. And look at those short, overlapping, ultra-wide leaves on the Warlock! Those leaves, together with its short stature, make it look pretty hard-core Indica.
