I'm not sure if this is cool to post here, but I need some advice. I have a 1988 Jeep Wrangler YJ. When I am cruising at a constant speed, it chokes for a second like a let off the gas real quick. It'll do this a few times and at any speed. I watched the tach and it didn't change. I'm thinking the throttle position sensor or the fuel pump/sending unit. Any advice will be appreciated. Thank you and smoke up
I don't see a reason you couldn't post it here. try the fuel filter, its a cheap easy place to start. google that shit, google is always my wife's 2nd go to, me being the first of course, then I google it
First off, what GIT said. Also if it is real quick you could be missing, how long since you changed your plugs and wires? Does it happen more when its wet out?
^^^^^ (all post above) And hope your gas pump is not in tank if that ends up the prob. Did you try to go to local autoparts store and do the free code deal? Might help?
Yeah I was just about to type this. We had an early 90's Wrangler for a few years and just before the fuel pump died it had similar symptoms as yours.. Our fuel pump was in the tank too... good luck! Duc
I should have listed what I've already done to it. The fuel filter is about a year old. I only run mid grade or premium gas from shell. I changed the plugs, wires, cap and rotor already, in addition to a bunch of unrelated parts. I did a couple fuel system flushes with seafoam and I've ran Lucas through it. I can drop the tank. That's not too hard. I think I'll swap out the pump this weekend. I know there's an issue with the sending unit because my guage bounces all over. Thanks for the tips! I really appreciate it.
Is there fuel injectors? Even if you clean them, one can get fucked up. Did you try to do the error code thing? I would do that before you drop the tank. They do the error code test free at auto parts stores (in case you didnt know).
Those things were the biggest PITA ever. I blew my '86 CJ 258 up three times and wanted a newer one but that, TBI set-up was pretty crappy at first.. they K-Car-ed it up! I feel your pain when the gremlins but, check all the sensors first with a trip to AZ. They will have a OBDI/II. Or Pep boys or whatever where you live..if they don't, straight up mule kick them in the nards and, find someone else. It will save ya a lot of hassle down the road.
Not to jack your thread but coincidentally I had to pop the hood on a new honda for the first time last night. Some misanthropic rodent had the nerve to die and putrify somewhere in there and the car smells just great.
