All we store is your IP address and email address you signed up with. Who has access to this information? Only the webmaster of the site can access IP addresses or email addresses. Moderators and other users cannot access any of this information. What can someone do with my IP address? It is hard to pinpoint a person by an ip address unless it is a static IP address. Typically only companies or educational institutions have static ip addresses. Mapping a logged on user to a certain IP address is usually not an easy task. It is very difficult to get user information out of an ISP, I have tried many times for reasons ranging from an $18,000 fraudulent credit card charge to Hacking (a federal offense in some cases). The ISP usually either doesn't have the information you need or are not willing to give it to you. What can I do to protect myself? If you are really paranoid about this you can start with a program like anonymizer http://www.anonymizer.com/ that will mask your IP address and browser info. How are proxies and anonymizer safer than regular browsing In my opinion they are not a lot safer, but they can be when used in combination. Any person who has the ability to actually get the user information from an ISP will likely have the ability to get it from a proxy or anonymizer. If you use multiple proxies they just have to follow a longer trail. Should I use this site? It is up to each person to decide if they feel comfortable using the site. Educate yourself on proxies and internet security. Many people browse this site without proxies or anonymizer programs including myself. Maybe you will feel safer with a proxy or anonymizer. Maybe you will only feel safe using it on public computers or at a friend's house. You are the one who has to sleep at night with the buzz in the next room/closet/basement, do whatever helps you sleep most.
