Was trying to figure out a cheap butane extraction one day while running errands at the local building supply store when a sale on mag flashlights caught my attention. First off, I have no idea if aluminum is a decent material. Stainless is obviously the best choice but it's what I did and too late now. So here we go. My apologies at the poor photo quality for some of the images. Lost the cam for awhile so had to use a cel phone. Supplies. 1- double c-cell battery mag-lite flashlight. $20 on sale 1- table top work vise $7 on sale 1 pyrex dish....any hash lover better have a few of these laying around 2- 20oz cans of Vector butane. $13 at the cigar shop 1- pack 00 steel wool $1 at the dollar store 1 small food processor. $9 at the dollar store Total cost- $51 not bad. Disassemble the flashlight and retain the end cap, the cone that retains the bulb and a large keeper washer that holds the LED assembly in place. Cut the bell of the bulb housing off with a hack saw leaving the threaded collar for later use. Drill a 16/64 inch hole in the center of the end cap. This will become the top of your tube and accept the largest fill adapter that comes with the Vector butane cans. Thoroughly wash all parts before going further. While the tube parts are soaking grind your buds or trim and cut a funnel to use while filling your tube. Remove the parts from washing and allow to completely dry. Reassembly goes as follows from left to right in the picture. The collar is what retains the washer for the bottom of your tube. Put the washer against the tube body and screw the collar over it. . Clamp the partially assembled tube in the table vise. Use a small ball of steel wool as a filter to keep weed from mixing with the butane as it exits the tube. Fill to within 1/2 inch of the top with the ground weed packing lightly. Seal the top with another small wad of steel wool then screw the end cap on. Take your now complete BHO tube, vise and dish outside to do the extraction. THIS IS A HIGHLY HAZARDOUS STEP AND CAUTION MUST BE TAKEN. NO SPARKS OR OPEN FLAME OF ANY KIND. Set up the tube so it's suspended about 2 inches over the dish and expel the first butane canister into the hole in the end cap. After the first can is empty wait 30 seconds then expel the second can into the BHO tube. As liquid drops into the catch dish it will start to evaporate very aggressively, this is the butane purging out of the oil. Once the dripping and boiling stops remove the dish to a heating pad to finish the purge process. You should end up with a very cold very volatile clear liquid that looks similar to this while waiting for the evaporation process to finish. Pretty fucking clean hey? In case you were wondering, why the vise? Here's the reason, this shit gets cold and no way you can hold the tube in your hand. Several minutes at room temperature after extraction and it's still frozen solid. After the purge is finished I froze the plate to ease in scraping and tried my hand at butter. My technique definitely needs some practice....but I'll get a nice amber candy butter someday. Any critique, improvement or correction in the process would be greatly appreciated. I have no clue as to what I'm doing and kinda just winging it here. Yield was low since I used the nastiest trim I have for the first run.
Thanks T6, had hopes of something clearer but it's by far the best I've ever toked. I'll try and be good and not burn through my trim before July but think that might be tough since trim is running out and no new gardens at my place until Sept. Maybe Joe or Rky could bring some trim then Useless and Stash could do a BHO clinic like Use wanted to do last year. It's tough thinking of hauling a grocery sack of trim through several states so somebody in state would need to be on board.
Looks great! The reason its milky is likely due to the sulfur content of the butane used. The easiest way I have found to correct this milky effect cheaper butane creates is to ad a few more steps to the process. Instead of scraping the goop with a razor grab some 99% ISO add a few table spoons to the pyrex dish. Swish it around until it melts all the gooey goodness then pour into a baby jar. Now allow the alcohol to evaporate over time and you will be left with a clear golden extract. You can help the evaporation process along using a pot of boiling water or a steamer. I do not know why this works but it does for me.
Vector is 5X refined. Best I could find. And I'm finishing the poop you see above. How's the RM toking? Hope you still have a mom round late August.
I have plenty of clones Rez. I did not take any chances on this one and on each pheno I seeded a bottom branch separate. One side pollinated with Rooie Male and the other side with accidental haze. This shit has the most unique taste. The high is super so far very nice. t6
The quality of trim is a big factor in how clean the final product is. I've use beautiful colas and the end product was absolutely beutiful. I also used the shittiest brick I could find and it looked liked shit it still got me higher than bird pussy.
Looks like a good run. Some tips - Try a screen instead of the wool. Just use a hose clamp to secure it on the end. Purge a little longer. Do not use boiling water. Boil the water and remove from the stove before beginning extraction, this gives it time to cool a bit. Indica's with big fat CST's make budder. Sativa's with smaller trichome heads don't seem to budder up as good. Also, use actual flowers for budder, not trim. Looking good though man. Love me some BHO.

Was a little worried about the steel wool but figured it would give me a finer filter than screen while still allowing ample flow. The steel wool in the top cap is to help disperse the butane more evenly. If you guys say screen I'm going screen tho. Didn't use boiling water Use. Just a heating pad underneath after the solution stopped roiling. Should I have had a heat source under the catch dish during the extraction? Guess that would make sense now that I think about it. Knew that for butane the yield weight was highly dependent on quality of the trim but not necessarily that the end product quality was also. Good to know. Thanks for the advice guys. You know after further thought, I suppose the steel wool vs. the screen really wouldn't make a difference. Res, you use some hot water (not boiling) in a pot/pan that your catch pan fits into after the 'tane injection. When you are done injecting, instead of going to the heating pad, set the bottom of your catch pan in the hot water. You will see the 'tane bubble, and about 2 seconds later most of the gas will evap off in a big cloud. Then go to the heating pad. If you want to try to make budder hash, I will give you detailed instructions. Yea, I will bring my O'Kief tube and a case of 'tane to the MnG, me and the homoSTASHual can do a clinic. :roffl:

You can catch your kitchen on fire and loose your eyebrows and eyelashes at the very least. Rockets of cannabis propelled by butane are not cool either. This is not something to be fucked around with, you can be seriously injured or DIE. If you are not comfortable playing with explosive gasses, stick to bubble or dry sieve.
Well, aside from freezing the trim I got everything else wrong for making budder.:roffl: Still toked like champ stuff tho. Thinking ISO may take a back seat from now on. Next run this week I'll use your method and see how it goes, thanks so much compadre.
