hey guys, I just won $500 at the casino tonight, so it's time to upgrade the cabinet! I'm feelin a 1000w HPS... but i don't know which kind of reflector would be most effective for my sized space. I've got a 6'x3' footprint, and I need to be able (obviously) to keep the light as close to the plants as possible, especially since the inside of the cab is about 5.5' tall. I've heard a lot of good things about the adjust-a-wing in specific... anyone have any feedback for it?

also, about how high should I need to keep it if I do end up getting this reflector with the optional light diffuser included? my AC is not inside my grow cab, so it's harder than normal for me to control temps. what would y'all suggest? I'd rather listen to yalls input rather than the hydroponic store owner's input for obvious reasons.

the other option to the adjust-a-wing is a glass covered, air cooled reflector. however, I'm worried about that type of reflector effectively covering the space I need covered.

Id think twice bout doin a 1k in that size of a room, let alone with 5.5ft ceiling........1k puts out a TON of heat........maybe 2-600watts???? or just 1......if your guna push it then you gotta do an aircooled hood for sure.....look into the EURO hood from HTGsupply.com

I've had the "wing" type reflecs before, they suck......a lot....so beware on that one. good luck

  3. Yeah, I wouldn't even think of putting a 1k in a cabinet. I started out with a single 1k in a 8'x10' room and cooling was a bit of a pita. I had to add a dedicated ac when I added the 2nd

*cough cough* The Adjust-A-Wings, which is a brand, don't suck at all. Over here in Europe they are considered THE best reflector on the market, because of great heat dispersion and a very large coverage area.

But I agree that a single 1000w wouldn't be good for your space, because your cabinet is 6 feet long and only 3 feet wide, it just would not be efficient at all. Really I think you'd be best off with two air cooled 400w lights, that would give you roughly 44w per square foot.

My 1k light is in a room that is 5x4x9 and at 42" away the temp is at 82-84 degrees at plant level. i have a air cooled reflector with a 600cfm fan attached and room venting at the ceiling and cool air at the bottom. night time temp is 68-70 and oh yeah co2 helps with heat tolerance so def. go with a 400 or 600 till you get more room. peace out. smoke one 4 us all.

well thanks for the input everyone who has said stuff so far.

I realize a 1000w is very high for the space I've got... but i've seen setups with my own two eyes that can keep 1000w lights 12-18" from the tops of the plants. I want to do as high an amount of wattage as possible to my flowering cabinet without blowing circuits in my apartment, and am trying to make a 1k work. if it won't, I can upgrade to 2 600w fixtures, but I already have 2 400w ones (one HPS one MH) and am not satisfied with the output i'm getting from those. I've got a $500 AC unit pointed directly at the outside of the cab and can keep the ambient temperature of the outside room anywhere from 50-90 degrees, and at the moment the inside temps are only about 8 degrees higher than the outside.

basically... I've got some damn good temp controls. If yall think 1k watts is plain not doable then i'll try something different, but I'd really like to see if I can make it work.

Until just recently, I had a 1000w w/ a cooltube in a 2.5d x 4w x 8t closet, and with a dedicated ac unit I was able to keep temps at the ideal range no problem. I was even able to drop them below 70 if I wanted to help bring some purple out. With a 250 cfm fan running the cooltube, you can touch the glass, and it's just warm to the touch. It might be a little overkill, but it can be done.

excellent thanks guys... the adjust-a-wing seems to be my best bet to cover the space without too much of a heat increase... should more than fill my needs. I was planning on the medium reflector so the whole package would cost less than my winnings, but then I went again tonight and won another $150. frickin fishes... buncha old guys pissin away their retirement.

as an added note, I'm sure I'm doing stuff wrong with my grows, but with the 2 400w lights I think I'll yeild around 1.5-2 oz per plant (in a DWC setup)... and I have this bad habit of accidentally killing my already small crops off. so I'm ok with wasting some power if it means that the plants that survive my black thumb can yeild enough medicine to get me through to the next harvest.

I'm well aware it's overkill... that's kinda the idea. use the fruits of one bad habit to fuel another. and man am I hoping for some serious "fruits".

you are better off with 2 400's or 2 600's in that space just cuz 1 light is not gonna give even coverage in the shape of your space. I would also look into an aircooled hood with the proper vent fan. That will keep your temps in check and allow you to place the light close to the tops if the plants

If you are hard pressed on getting that 1000........I personally recommend the reflector I just picked up. It's the AiroFlow........same I idea as the Euro's just offers a larger coverage area.

I've yet to hook up a fan to cool the light ( I know you're probably saying WTF why would you get an air cooled hood and NOT air cool it) but I have it sitting like 6" from the top of the canopy and you can put your hand on top of any of the cola's and it's just kind of warm. And the thing has a 24" coverage area. My temps never get above 82 and thats usually toward the end of my lights on cycle.

yeah to be honest smarmy kinda highlighted my problem... wierdly shaped box. if I were to get 2 600s, I'd definitely get glass hooded, air cooled reflectors for them. the main reason I'm even considering a 1k light is because the adjust-a-wing is supposedly able to evenly light a box of that shape and size... but I think that 2 600s may work better anyway. I'll let yall know what I decided on when I start up my next growshow... should be in a week or two.

Swarmy is right. It CAN cover your grow box, the problem is more that it won't be evenly covered....I mean you cab is really narrow and the adjust-a-wing is made to light a square area, not an elongated. I'm sure it would work, but it won't be the most efficient :)
