What type/size (mesh) of screen do you use, do you just put it over the tops of the container and the buds go through it?  Like if the plant's in a 5 gal bucket you just secure the screen over the top?  It sounds pretty cool, what are the drawbacks?

Well you know, it kinda ticks me off that I spends days researching, for hours at a time and he asssumes that I'm sitting on my ass waiting for things to fall into my lap.  A lot of things are talked about here, but not described for the beginner DESPITE the name of the forum.  I also think a lot of people here confuse what's available at GrowKind and whats on Overgrow.

And who's ruder, someone jumping in to add nothing to a conversation but a derogatory comment or someone defending their original position?

2inch chicken wire is commonly used for a screen, and should be the same shape as your light hood. (ie retangle hood=retangular screen) Some even dish the screen to match the curvuture of light coming from the hood. If this isn't clear I'm sorry I got really blazed!!!wait no I'm not!!!

Frew, I don't think he was being rude at all. We see the same questions in a cycle about once every couple weeks. If people would read the faq EVERY answer is there.

and Radgirl there is a post here in tha faq on it. Also here is a link on the scrog method http://www.overgrow.com/faq/t79

Well the people on this forum are more civil then some OGers. While the information that can be found on BOTH Growkind and OG in FAQ is all you ever need so either live the life (read your ****) or quit! simple as that......

    Peace

Thanks for the link to OVERGROW, I'll check it out.

As for the GROWKIND faq (http://forum.growkind.com/forum/topic.cgi?forum=4&topic=22 if anyone else wants to take a look) it talks about topping to make a canopy effect, and that's not what I was asking about.  I didn't read all 16 pgs because I didn't see the info I was looking for.  If somebody knows it DOES talk about an actual, physical screen to restrain the plants, please tell me which page and I will read it thoroughly.

Hey Rad girl, I too started my first SCROG after a good SOG. FAQ doesn't answer all the questions I had so don't worry about the lack of help.

My mesh was placed about 24" above the base, could've gone lower. 12-18" I would say now.

I used plastic net, I fear chicken wire would rust, the net however is not too tight and the plants are pushing it up. make your screen tight . Veg and grow the plants, when they raise above the screen bend them and tie them to the screen. Train the plants to grow horozontally along the screen until the 'canopy' is full, you decide the area when you put up the screen, it sould have good light over it's area. When the screen area is full the little side brances should be growing up above the screen, Keep a nice bud site every 2-3", prune unwanted branches. When your happy you should have a flat canopy with little stems up growing equally spaced, these will develop into colas later. Start the flower light cycle, and feed too, and slowley, so as not to stess the plants, remove bud sites under the canopy. Eventually you should have stems with shader leaves under the canopy, the shaders will die.

The only bud should be on the vertical growths, which will grow up during flowering, these have full light and equally spaced so each will be a cola in it's own right. The idea is to keep all the colas at the same height so the light isn't raised to the highest and away from the lower tops. Some plants grow taller than others, with SCROG you set the same height for all plants and have a flat canopy.

Well that's the idea, I'm on the first and about to flower. SOG was good but the canopy wasn't as flat as it could be, I raised the light above the biggest plant, this was a good 24" above the smallest and so it didn't get as much light as it could have to it! SCROG should sort this and give each cola good light.

Sorry about the length of the post, but...

Thank you streaker, that answered a lot of my questions.  How is your screen/net suspended?  Did you build a frame around it and then hang it over, is it on legs?  That's the part I don't get.  I guess if most people use chicken wire it's sturdy enough to suspend without a frame.

    Thanks again for your help!

sounds like a plan but how big a screen did you use for each plant or did you go with the 1sqft per 50watts cos thats a lot of bud for my 400hps, sounds like a really good plan....

My screen is attached to the sides of my room, it covers the complete area. The size would depend on the light. you need good light to grow good buds, to big a screen and the edges won't get enough light, try to keep the light 18" above the canopy. I'm limited by the size of my room otherwise i may have contructed a wooden frame to match the light pattern.
