    shaun1says Doin it in water

So before I left home for thanksgiving I put one of my plants that I am SOGing on a booster to put it closer to the light where the rest of my plants are and then watered it heavily knowing I would not be there for 4 days (normally water every 3) and when I came back I found that I had made a puddle on the booster that those damn soil knats had been multiplying in it looked like. Also the soil top was covered in them and I cold see them crawling in the bottom holes. So I got rid of my lake and sprayed with a pest killer that I got from the Cannabis festival (in SF). But it seems like since then everyday I come back and my soil is COVERED in them. it is not unusually worse in my other pots but no matter how much I spray them come back daily! Can anyone help me?

    Thank you
    Shaun

Thats an easy problem to take care of. The cause is over watering. To solve the problem you just let the soil dry out.

Yea let the soil dry out and get some sticky traps and they will all be gone in a couple of weeks. :)

No-Pest will kill a lot of things . I just don't want something that potent in my space . Maybe in my dumpster . Just me . Just joking around . They work . Use them if you chose .

Gnats can be introduced into the grow space by Peat Moss based potting soils . Black Gold brand got me when I couldn't get my usual . The eggs can lay dormant till you put them in the warm and moist conditions of a grow room . Bingo instant gnats .

Avoid Peat products , read the label . Do without rather than buy peat . Again , it's just me , do what works for you .

Some alternatives to chemistry . Tillling the top layer of soil , about an inch deep , with a kitchen fork , will kill lots of the delicate burrowing gnats trying to find a moist spot to lay eggs , larvae are fragile too and many can be destroyed with this tech . You have to do it daily and use sticky traps too , and you may never get rid of them entirely .

Weed block fabric (hardware / garden center) can be used to block the little buggers from entering through the drain holes without blocking drainage at all . A circle of the stuff cut to fit and weighted with some gravel will stop the gnats from getting at the soil from the top . If they can't lay eggs in the soil and the larvae in the soil can't emerge to mate then you have them at a serious disadvantage .

I have heard of using perlite in a one inch layer to thwart the gnats but wetting this layer defeats the system , and the stuff is pretty dusty and not too good for your lungs either .

Flypaper in a still corner works like a spiderweb and can get a lot of them too .

Consider pulling any Pest strips out of your area a few weeks prior to harvest .
