Just got my 400Watt HPS and I am stoked. I was going to wait untill I moved to get it but I figure why not. I see the difference now but.......I under estimated the heat that it would produce. The room itself is very cold normally because our heater sucks but the closet got way too hot. I didn't think the ventilation process all the way through...I only thought about what I could yeild. I left the closet doors open which helped with temps but sucked for stealth at night. Can't do much DIY because I'm renting. Strike up another noob mistake. So when I get home, I'm going to take the HPS down and put my T5's back in. I'll need to rethink my setup for the new house....we don't move untill April

Is your grow near a chimney or outside wall?

Nope. Believe me, I tried to brainstorm on how I could redirect without making holes in walls or doors while still being stealth. Can't do it. I am bummed. I had big dreams without thinking it through. Atleast now I have the light.

Can ya close the closet door bout 3/4 of the way and put a fan on the floor btwn the closet door and wall then get some type of cardboard to hang up to deflect the light from gettin out in the room, I dunno, but I always feel if their's a will then there's a way, smoke a fatty and think it over:eusa_think: that's usualy when I come up with ideas lol

HA! You just gave me an idea....the closet I have is a 2 panel folding door. Perhaps I can open the doors a little bit and prop the fan at the top and suck air out of the closet. Hmmmmm.....but I won't be able to stop much light getting out of the top. I'll have to test this theory out. Ghetto but could be effective. All else fails, T5's are going back.

Man Ghetto is the only way I go...lol, try and baffle the light somehow it's ok if some gets out try and block the windows somehow so it's not bright at night, and try to have a fan blowing over the tops of your plants so it blows the heat away. Good Luck

Buy a replacement door at homedepot and put the vent holes on that one, then before you move out put the original door back in. If it's the 2 panel folding kind that i'm thinking of it should be very easy to switch the doors and very cheap, like $35

Yes that is a very good idea but the ghetto solution I just tried for the last few hours failed. All it did was warm up my normally cold room. I had a fan at the top of the doors sucking out and a fan from the bottom blowing in. If only I had a window in the room to syphon cold air from the outside into the closet. With the current setup, I'd have to get cold air from 2 rooms away and no way of concealing the duct. Looks like it's back to the drawing board. Maybe a 250 watt light is the answer? Regardless, I can't be too bummed out. I'm still smoking my own home grown bud. I might as well get real good at growing with T5's and get a few more grows under my belt before I move over to the HPS. I figure I can get one more grow in before April with my old setup.

    Trade it in..

..on an enclosed (sealed/ventilated) fixture...then you can even use a small portable AC to cool that damn bulb down, no matter the temp of your intake air.

    Ehh, just a thought....

Is a 250wHPS enough for a small closet grow? (5) Plants... Was planning on a 400wHPS but after reading this thread it dawned on me that I have no plan for the heat problem either!!! There is simply no way to vent or put holes in the wall or any of that... Now I'm thinking a 250wHPS like destruct said... Is this going to make enough heat difference to be worth loosing lumens???? HELP!!! You know when I started all of this people said oh growing is so easy it's a weed dude! Now here I am up to my ass in issues and every step I take I hit another wall. :troll:

Well listen.. cannabis is a weed.. (or was it actually an herb? no i think it's a weed..) and it will grow in just about ANY condition you can make for it. and that's the truth. I've had plants growing in a closet that's 5'X3.5'X8'... with a 400W HPS and absolutely no ventilation.. just me going in there sometimes. Now the temps never got above oh say.. 95ish.. but in the 90s is considered harmful to your plants.. so they say. And it is, it stunts growth, it stretches them, reduces yield.. all that jazz.

Basically, you can grow this plant with whatever the hell you please. The first thing to think about it safety of yourself, including electricity and water, people finding out about the grow, and fires... Get those down pat, and then you don't have to worry about anything but slowely optimizing your grow.. which is what people do here. When your told to keep temps at 70-80 with 75 the good spot and say 60% humidity.. that means do that for best yield.. your plants will grow out of that range.

Just somethin to think about blitz... It is a weed, and will grow just about anywhere with anything at anytime in any conditions... but if you want to best you can get out of it.. follow the posts here.

PS: A 250 watter is a pretty good reduction in heat... I had a 400 and I added a 250 in later.. with the 400 temps were around 85-90ish.. ambient temp was usually kept at about 70-72 (i live in a tri-level and this closet is halfway underground.. VERY Good at keeping the place cool...) and when i added the 250 it only spiked about 5-10 degrees... so.. yes it's gonna run cooler.. but the best idea.. wait till your not renting, own your home.. run a cool tube to a 400... Better yields better plants..

Like you said, keep practicing under the T5s... get the main stuff down pat, like ferts and training methods, and topping, and harvesting, and loving them, and hating them, and all that stuff.. then when your in your own place, go for broke.
