So my germ. shep. was chasing my car around the normal loop to ditch his ass so I can leave, and somehow he sliced part of his main pad mostly off on his front paw on the rocks. I got the one front paw with some Neosporin, non stick pad wrapped up with tape and a "mutt-luck" leather booty I had from my passed female shep. That seems to be healing OK, seems to be itching, but my concern right now is for his other paw. It has a small crack or cut in it, he seemed to be paying alot of attention to it. So I put the other mutt-luck on it, and we were just muttlucking around all day. I brought him inside and took the not so bad one off and he layed down and licked it for 45min straight. You think I should bandage that one too? If I pour some hydrogen peroxide on it, will that bother him if he laps some of it up? It's basically bleach isn't it? Which would be like chlorine, which them city dogs drink every day. I know dogs are friggin tough, and this one tolerates pain like no other, but damn...I hate to see him in pain.

Sorry can't post pics from this computer, mine went to shit.

You need to be careful with this....and infection on his paw would be very bad and could potentially require eventual amputation. I don't advise you to do ANYTHING without calling your local vet.

Here is an all night vet I am very familiar with, PLEASE call. The itching worries me.

And hydrongen peroxide is used as mouthwash and is safe. Don't drink a lot of it. No higher than 3%.

(That was not advice ;) )

Gotta agree with Canna on this one. We had our lab-hound-mix's tail screwed up by a car door. We could have stopped the bleeding and patched it, no problem. The actual problem is infection, more so with a paw that is constantly touching ground. Get em` to a vet any way you can.

Also check if these are actually cuts or hot spots.......

Oh and the peroxide wont kill him, but don't be surprised if he projectile vomits if he drinks too much. Call the vet ;)

Dog Saliva Is A Very Strong Antiseptic

My Rottie Has Sliced His Pads On Shells Before And As Long As It Does Not Need Stitching Up , The Dog's Saliva Alone Will Heal It

Vets Bills Are Exessivly High , Both Here , And Probably Higher Where You Are

Itching can be a sign that the wound is healing.

You should change the dressing daily. An infection will smell awful.

If it start's to smell funky(you'll know), get him to a vet immediately(unless you WANT a three-legged dog)!

    Animal Receptionists Are Very Loving

Being A Perpetual Patient , I Only Wished Doctors And Hospital Receptionists Had Half The Heart Of Those Friendly Vet's Practice Staff That Greet My Animals .

I Remember My First Rottweiler , Derringer ( Named After A Friends Dog , A Pit Bull Cross Rhodesian Ridgeback , Who Incidentally Had A Big Fight With A Black Bear Up In The Hills Behind Buckley Bay ; Three Massive Slashes Down it's Chest , But It Lived To Tell The Tale

Of Course , Stitching , And Rabies Injections Were Neccesary

Salt Water Being Fine For Wiping The Wound , And Infant Ibuprofen For Pain ( Big Dogs, Despite Being In A Lot Of Pain Do Not Show It , So Half A Baby Pain Killer Will Help ( Baby Ibuprophen Is 90% Cheaper Than What The Vet Is Going To Sell You , That's A Fact ; My Uncles Practice Bought Medications , Etc From Ireland , And Smuggled Them Into The U.K To Try To Make Medications More Affordable For The Farmers Who Were , And Still Are Suffering From The Epidemics Over The Last Decade

Of Course ; When In Doubt , Get Your Best Friend In ASAP .

Anyways , My Rottie Derringer Was Running Down The Beach In Full Gallop , Which Is A Sight To See

All Of A Sudden He Did A Nosedive And Went Head Over Heals :icon_scratch:

He Was Screaming And I Found The Strength To Actually Run To His Aid , Only To Find He Was Wrapped In Fishing Line And Hooks Which Must Have Been Three Inches Long !!

They Were From A Commercial Long Line Fishing Boat

Every Time He Moved , The More The Tangled Line Tightened

    The Hooks Digging Deeper

He Had Tried To Remove Some Of The Hooks Himself , And As A Result Had Three Of Them In His Mouth And Throat:shocked:

I Was Overcome , And In Panic Mode , And All Of A Sudden , A Guy Grabbed My Shoulder And Nodded At Me And Threw A Towel Over The Dog

He Wrapped Derringer Up And Walked Very Quickly To His Almost Brand New Mercedes And Lay Derringer Down In The Leather Seats In The Back , The Towel Doing Little To Disguise The Blood

We Were At The Vets Within Five Minutes And After Sedation Eighteen ( 18) Hooks Were Removed .

Diagnosis Was Touch And Go Considering The Loss Of Blood , But Every Effort Would Go To Save This Dog ( Potters Pride - Fantasia ) Showdog.

The Guy, Sorry , The Hero That Saved My Dogs Life Was So Humble And Reassuring , And It Turned Out He Was On Leave From The Army At The Time , And I Must Say His Training Served Him Well

We Worried All That Night, And When We Went To See Him The Next Morning , We Were Relieved To Find Out There Was No Permanent Damage And He'd Be Fine .

A Receptionist , Who Did Not Have To , But Nonetheless Chose To Spend The Night With My Dog Is Nothing Less Than An Angel:thumbsup:

It Was The First ( And Last ) Time He Was Not By My Side

So , Injections And Antibiotics , And Also The Tip On Saving Money By Using Baby Paracetemol

I Was Expecting At Least A Couple Of Hundred Pounds For The Bill , But I Was Blown Away That The " Hero " Had Left A Cheque , A Blank Cheque , And Had Told The Vet To Pull Out All The Stops

I Cried , And To This Day I Don't Know How Much It Cost ( 5 Days , Constant Monitoring )

But I'll Never Forget That There Are True Heroes Out There

    He Has My Deepest Respect

As Do All The Staff At That Practice, Especially The Girl At The Front Desk That Spent The Night Keeping An Eye On Him.

Now , If Only My Three Stepsons Were As Loving As My Dogs ,lol

cool, cool, I'll just call his vet and see what he's got to say right after I strap a bag of urine to my leg and go try to get this job. I made him stay in last night and when I got up to check on him I noticed the other one has a pretty good slice in it too. That poor dog, someone shot him in the hip a couple year ago, so his back half doesn't work that well. And now his front paws are all sliced up. He's gotta be hurtin, my man literally ran his paws off trying to go with me.

Peroxide and bleach arent the same thihng. licking peroxide wont hurt him. People sometimes use peroxide for gum problems.

But if the crack is due to heat, or a thick callus smeasring a little cocoa butter on it might soften it. The cocoa butter wont hurt him if he licks it. However, to work well, it would be good to smear on the cocoa butter, then put on the bandage or the bootie to give the cocoa butter time to do it's softening work. Maybe put it on at bedtime so he will be asleep while it works?

You can find a big jar of cocoa butter at Walmart or any drugstore. It's pretty cheap.

Hey, my dog went on a little run this morning and came home with a dead chicken in his mouth...now Im wondering if he killed the chicken or just found a dead one.... LOL...with dogs, it's always something. To a dog a fence is just a fun challenge! and what could be more fun than a nice stinky, stiff dead chicken?

Yea that was the first time and it sucked. The corner of the bag was scratching my other leg for an hour and a half. I live thirty miles out. I didn't even get to use it, couldn't get an interview blah blah blah damn job search BS.

His paws were looking better today when I change his bandage. The flaps of skin had dried up and I was able to cut them off as close as possible. They smell...well...like a dog, which is good. I think he's in business, may be tender for awhile, but looking good. Thanks for all the quick replies, I appreciate it.
