Let the adventures begin! I took my first clones last night, after finding out my parents weren't coming out, we decided to step up the grow, as we seem to have some slower growing strains (mostly environment induced...)

Anywhoo, here's what we did: We got 10 total, we did not mist previously, have read to and some not to, since it's really inconvenient for us to visit the shed twice a day, we did not.
Took a sharp cut w/ razor, soaked for 10 minutes in water. made new cut underwater, as well as gentle scraping on lower stem (enough to get fuzzies in water...) & rolled in rooting hormone. Stuck in moist vermiculite (w/o scraping stuff off...) & domed up. Have heating pad underneath, as it gets cold in my house still. It is stupendously arid in my house, about 15% humidity, so i don't think we'll vent the dome too much, unless a lot of condensation begins to build up, not likely here though.

next time trim off some of those lower leaves leaves . the more leaves you have the more water it's gonna need to survive. I would cut off about an inch or two of the tips of the fan leaves

I'm with Swarmy here. I found it was always best just to leave the very top growth tip when taking clones. Seems they root faster that way....at least in my experience. I would trim all but the top most leaves myself. I think you'll be happier in the long run.

    Interesting setup though. :ebert:

I see you have the powdered "Take Root" rooting hormone, from Schultz, right?

I've used it and had terrible results. Followed instructions, but it never seemed to work for me. How about you, greenthumb, used it before? Anyone else?

    Groovy looking set-up, too, BTW.

they seem to be big to me...i usually have clones that are 2-4 inches high...with just one to two set of leaves...then into the plugs and dome with heating pad...i have had good luck with that rooting compound ...just my opinion...hope it helps...like herb said...and good luck..

i have not used that rooting hormone before, so i don't know how well it's going to work. i really only have room in a 3x3 tent for max of 6 big plants, so really, i'm shooting for 60%.

they are a tad big, but i waited a little longer than i intended to pull clones - i had to find out if parents were coming out, and when found they were not, then i got the go-ahead to try to clone.

i will trim more next time, i don't remember reading anything about how much to trim, so it will be an experiment really this time.

and yeah, i know my setup is ghetto fab - my little sprout dome was way too short, and i had to make sure it was sealed up well, as i mentioned it is VERY dry here, and i thought plastic wrap would be the best option with no $ invested. go ahead, laugh, i know it looks stupid!!! :)

Moisture question - I used clear cups so I could see the roots, and I can see a bit of moisture inside the cups - not much, though. I know the point of popping the dome every day is to let moisture out, but it's REALLY dry here, and I don't want my plants to become too dry.

When is too much moisture in a dome for MJ? when you see moisture on your dome? cause there is none whatsoever right now, none even on the plants themselves, just a tad in the cups. I would hate to kill my clones b/c I didn't give them enough water....

Should I not vent? or maybe mist them???? please help out, I don't want to screw this up from the getgo!!!

    peace

I have used the Schultz Take Root with soil and rock wool. It works equally well in both setups. I find that it's important to initially have high moisture in the medium (soil, vermiculite, rock wool) when using the powdered rooting hormone. When following the soak and cut under the water method I pH my water to 6.0 and I use plenty of powder to coat the stem, but I tap off the excess before I put it into the medium. I had a good success rate, I would say at least 80-90%. As far as humidity is concerned I would say keep it as high as you can for the first 4-6 days, in the 90%+ range. It's fine for there to be condensation dripping from the interior of the dome. Vent it once a day to replenish the Co2 and oxygen. You can start to ween them off the dome after 4-6 days by removing it for longer periods of time each day until you leave it off. If they droop and wilt badly, mist them and replace the dome.

I recently made a DIY bubble cloner from parts all purchased at Wal Mart for less than $20. I switched to a gel rooting hormone. I highly recommend this type of cloner. It has surpassed my expectations and has helped me to speed up my cloning process. I get fully developed roots in less than 14 days in my bubble cloner without any rooting hormone at all. It was taking me 17-21 days to get visible roots on my rock wool plugs using the powdered hormone.

Your setup looks like it should work out just fine. Remember as long as they are green and look alive, they are alive. Don't give up on them if they seem to be taking a while to root. When they do root they will take off and when you feed them they will go crazy!:thumbs-up:

i also use the powdered take root stuff and I have 100% success. I don't remove the dome for the first 10 days, I don't touch it at all ,but I clone in rockwool cubes not vermiculite.
