Okay, plants under 24/0 _grow_ faster but do they _mature_ faster? i.e., would I, could I go to 12/12 sooner after 24/0 than 18/6?? Other than bigger plants, what are the benefits of 24/0? Can I use the non-shiny side of tin foil or is it just all bad? What I'm looking for are alternating/spiraling leaves before 12/12 right, for better yeild? And I can force it into flowering sooner but the yield will not be as good, is that correct? I'm trying to get this all down pat so I can just slip into the groove of maintenance and watchful, eager waiting. I have my grow area set up. Each plant has it's own compact fluor. It is so ugly, when I find my cheapo, got it out of a candy machine digital camera I'll try to post some pics. You're not going to believe it.
your plants will only be as good as your setup. Improve your lights and ventilation. By the way how many watts are you using?
I would really like to, but it would likely burn my house down. I threw the pkgs for the lights away, but they were equivalent to 100-150 watt incandescent. 27 watts seems to stick out. Ventilation's pretty good. Also, I forgot to mention that one of the "walls" is actually a big 2.5'x2.5' mirror and the other walls are a nice, warm white.
I wouldn't be using a mirror as a wall for your grow setup..Mirrors will absorb the light, But not reflect it very well.. Try to get some flat white cardboard panels in there or something. CG
And an incandescent does not create hardly enough lumens anyway. You need to invest in some cheap floros, or a affordable Hps or MH system. No blacklights, no halogen's no heat lamps, and no infared. Not bustin on your setup just saving you time at the end. Sounds like you have done some reading but you need to start with the basics first!
I have fluoros. 1 per plant, ~4" above plants, 20-some watts or so, adequate ventilation. I cannot put in HID because my house wiring will not support it. Before flowering comes around I may be able to move the set up to a location that will support the HID. Thanks for the mirror tip, CG, will do. (Edited by rad girl at 2:19 pm on Mar. 11, 2003)
Yo! Hey, if you got sockets that only have two slots, get one of those 3 prong to two prong adapters for you lights. I bet it will work. I've plugged plenty of computers into such adapters. They were fine. What else in your house is causing bad electricity? I may be able to help. Later!
Yeah, nulfire, I do that a lot already but that's not the problem. The circuits won't handle the load. It's original wiring from the late 40's and some screwball previous owner hosed things up to boot. I couldn't toast an eggo while brewing my coffee if I wanted to, it's pretty much a 1-appliance at a time type place. My accomplice went around one time and changed all the outlets on the main floor from 2 prong to 3 prong, despite not actually having a ground to connect the 3rd prong to. I'm pretty much just waiting for the house to burn down around me. When it gets warmer I can run a line from the window down to the basement where it's been grounded and there are a few circuits on breakers instead of fuses (to support a HPS). The potential problem there is too much heat, regardless of the fans, being in a room facing southwest on the 2nd story of a house with no AC in the middle of a desert. Or I can clear some crap out of the one basement closet and have the glow room (what was that movie, poltergeist??) but that's low priority/big challenge for now ... or I've considered buying a 4-drawer filing cabinet and converting it, but ventilation could be a problem there too. So for now I'm stuck with my homemade lights and flourescent bulbs in what would otherwise be an ideal location. If you have any ideas I'd love to consider them.
do you happen to know an electrician? well pay for one to come and fit a consumer unit-fuse box, they plumb directly into the mains, then get him to run a couple of sockets of it,cost-fuse box in uk about £50 wiring depends on where you are growing, how far away from the mains hook up are you? but the wire is dirt cheap. going to cost you a bit but if you can get a line off the mains you could run a big ass light like closetgrowths and boil the kettle at the same time as watching the tv lolololol....running the wire halfway across the house is a real pain you can get by with high ampage extensions but thats still wire going somewhere....you are going to need about 40-50 watts per plant-square foot to get some good buds, leastways thats what ive read 24/7-18/6 you would use less electric but i dont know if its better or worse seems the jurys still out on that one. non shiny side is ok but you would be better off with white, matt not gloss i think or better still mylar and yes you can go sooner but yield will suffer-just remenber they will double in height when you flower
You may be on to something there .. the grow box is pretty much as far away from the main as you can get, but we have a FUBARed fuse box and a breaker box, it may not be that bad ($$) to combine the 2 and get a true diagnosis of the wiring from a pro. Even if an electrician just combined the 2 I could run my own wire with a friends help. Funny how I'd rather do that than clean out that closet, LOL. Thank you so much mingingbollocks for answering all my questions, would you answer 1 more?? I know what bollocks are, but what is minging?
Great advice null!.. Its ideal to have a group of multi-talented people hangin' out around GK to help us out with almost every growing need possible.Speaking of electricians,...Knock, Knock!!.Herbsparky?..Are you home?? I see him, he's all geeked out on that kief again Oh wait a minute, his dogs are barking..He's up!! Herb, can you give this Rad girl anymore info on the electrical scene??..Thank ya Sir! CG Electricity!...MMMMMMMMMMMM!!(Homers voice)..I buy a new electrical gadget each month...Been doing it for years This thing is so freakin cool when your real fried, and the lights are out!!! ..You touch it, The sparks follow your finger..Its a great conversation starter..Heheheheheheheeee! dictionary says Mince \Mince\, v. t. [imp. & p. p. Minced; p. pr. & vb. n. Minging.] [AS. minsian to grow less, dwindle, fr. min small; akin to G. minder less, Goth. minniza less, mins less, adv., L. minor, adj. (cf. Minor); or more likely fr. F. mincer to mince, prob. from (assumed) LL. minutiare. ?. See Minish.] 1. To cut into very small pieces; to chop fine; to hash; as, to mince meat. --Bacon. 2. To suppress or weaken the force of; to extenuate; to palliate; to tell by degrees, instead of directly and frankly; to clip, as words or expressions; to utter half and keep back half of. I know no ways to mince it in love, but directly to say -- ``I love you.'' --Shak. Siren, now mince the sin, And mollify damnation with a phrase. --Dryden. If, to mince his meaning, I had either omitted some part of what he said, or taken from the strength of his expression, I certainly had wronged him. --Dryden. 3. To affect; to make a parade of. [R.] --Shak. but where i come from means fucked up fubar pissed wasted clear now lolololololololol hope elecy works out for you,you will be better with a hps lamp BIGGER BUDS or so im told
Youch! so in a word .. mincemeat?? LOL Reminds me of a mug I have that says "As my bit for the environment, I've decided to stop using men and then throwing them away." If I had it to do all over again, I would choose a profession that I could use in my personal life, such as an electrician, pipefitter, etc. Subatomic energy is just a bit too hard to apply in everyday life.
I'm here.....Rad Girl give me some more info on what you are trying to do. Unfortunately I can't do much from here, but maybe I can help guide you along.
Ah, well Herb, I'm just rolling ideas around in my brain. I have a great grow location but insufficient (I think) power supply. Does 150 watts of fluors take the same # amps as a 150watt HPS? I have nasty old wiring in my house and I'm not too sure about the power drain. But ~125w fluor is going so maybe I could put a HPS in ... Other things I'm considering to enable HPS lighting: Running an ext. cord out my 2nd story window and into the basement where the wiring in the office has been slightly ugraded from the original and hoping I can keep the area cool enough for the plants; getting an electrician to combine my FUBARed fuse box and my breaker box into one and running a line upstairs; moving the grow location which would be hell; or making do with the existing fluor setup. Any recommendations? 'Preciate your help.
