'3D printed gun' discovered by police

Police have foiled what they believe is the first attempt in Britain to manufacture guns using a 3D printer.

This Liberator pistol was the first firearm made with a 3D printer earlier this year

By Martin Evans, Crime Correspondent11:45AM BST 25 Oct 2013

Officers uncovered components including a trigger mechanism and a magazine capable of holding bullets during a raid on a property in Manchester.

The makeshift weapon was found alongside a state of the art 3D printer, sparking fears that those responsible were planning the country’s first factory specialising in turning out the next generation of deadly firearms.

Sir Peter Fahey, Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, told Sky News that the weapons were a “new phenomenon”, but said his officers were determined to prevent them making it onto the streets.

Earlier this year concerns were raised that the printers – which construct everyday solid items using very thin layers of plastic – could be used to make a gun containing no metal parts.

Security experts fear the weapons will be used by criminals to evade detection by security scanners at airports and other high risk targets.

Detective Inspector Chris Mossop of GMP told Sky: “If what we have seized is proven to be viable components capable of constructing a genuine firearm, then it demonstrates that organised crime groups are acquiring technology that can be bought on the high street to produce the next generation of weapons.

“In theory, the technology essentially allows offenders to produce their own guns in the privacy of their own home, which they can then supply to the criminal gangs who are causing such misery in our communities.

“Because they are also plastic and can avoid X-ray detection, it makes them easy to conceal and smuggle. These could be the next generation of firearms.”

Sir Peter added: “We will really need to look at this new development. Certainly we feel that we are having success – and the important thing is not to be defeatist about this.

“It is not to think that we’ll never win that these people are cleverer than us, they are not, they are just more violent than us.”

In May a US defence company successfully fired the first ever gun made with 3D printer technology and announced plans to distribute the blueprints online.

The cost of 3D printers has fallen dramatically and now be purchased for less than £1,000.

A man has been arrested and is being questioned in connection with the seizure.

Yeah i remember hearing about this a while back there. The trouble and expense you would go to though to pay top dollar for 3D printer AND all the materials would mean your cheaper buying a gun on black market....

BTW im not 100% sure but i need to google it...but im sure i heard the news the other day saying you can make BODY parts on these 3D printers.... yeah, like Kidneys and shit:eek: I'll need to check my facts on that ne cos it doesnt seem right thatbody parts can be made without the orignal cell structure and shit like that:bduh:

The cheapest 3d printers cost a grand. A gun costs about 400 quid and it will come with at least ten rounds. You cant print bullets ;)

One thing these printed guns will be good for is disposal of a murder weapon. Print it, shoot it and melt it down. murder weapon gone :thumbs-up:

Most of the stuff I've read on this printed guns say they only last one or two shots anyway with the technology right now.

Interesting, so you're saying even though guns are illegal you can still buy 'em on the streets?

    Troll much?

Nobody has ever said that there are 0 guns available on the black market in England even though they are illegal. What has been said many times is that their illegality makes them much harder to get than they would be were they legal and that lack of availability results in most criminals not having guns.

That availability simply can not be controlled is the biggest and stupidest falsehood propagated by the gun nuts in the US.

But, you stay firm in your belief that guns should be easily available to anyone and everyone and enjoy your lovely, safe country.

Drugs are illegal but you'll always be able to find them on the street too, same with prostitutes and a host of other illegal shit, where theres a will theres always gonna be a way. Listen semtex is illegal but you can still walk intop a glasgow pub with affiliations in Ulster and within a week you can aquire that too, dont mean shit though

You can buy a gun if you know the right people in the right pub type scenario. But things is,if you buy a gun on blackmarket chances are that its gonna have been used before. If your willing to take the risk that the gun hasnt been used in some gruesome murder then more power to ya. Only people chasing guns over here are people that are in danger of being shot by guns. Or people who have something prized to protect. You walk down the street with a gun and your getting 5 years though and then a year for every bullet. No one takes the risk unless its worth the risk. What was your point again nippie?:tvlaugh:
