Special thanks to GK this holiday from the Farmer Family, whose lives have all been improved by two or three moods thanks to you... HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!:coolbounce:
Happy Thanksgiving everybody! I don't really celebrate it here in Japan, but I am very thankful on a daily basis of what I have, where I am, and who I am. Eat some turkey for me. The stores don't have turkey meat, much less a whole bird, and we don't have an oven to cook it in anyway. :icon_confused:
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! nippie, the wife and I are going out to dinner for thanksgiving. No kids, it's just her and I and the dog, and he gets a doggy bag when we get home. We will also Skype with family and go over to a friends house for deserts. then come back home and :redbong:
We have two thanksgivings today, then a stoners thanksgiving on Sunday. Hopefully everyone had a good year this year Eat some turkey!! But watch out for the brownies !!!
Happy thanksgiving to all! Im cookin today, bird, corn, stuffing, sweet taters, mashed taters, asparagus, pie, gravy and a few other things....pretty traditional stuff
Cultural Exchange. Whats your customs behind Thanksgiving? Yeah happy thanksgiving to you guys.Iv never quite understood the whole gig cos obviously iits an American thing. Without me googling it,of the top of my head Thanksgiving is some sort of pilgrim celebration right? They gave thanks for surviving a winter and gave thanks to the harvests they had recieved for the winter head.Is that what thanksgivings about Reason i ask is cos iv seen Americans on FB post about how thanksgiving is a religious thing or has origins in hanking God for stuff . Iv heard it was a day Abe Lincoln set aside to celebrate and give thanks to God for military victories and iv seen other people refer to it as a day when the founding colonists of America would give thanks to God for things like surviving droughts and famines and stuff like that? Is one of these the correct origin of Thanksgiving.... or is a combination of all these stories? We dont have anything like Thanksgiving. Only thing we do as a country where we all sit down for a meal (not including christmas) is Burns Supper or St.Andrews day. So lets have a little cultural exchange here lol. You guys teach me something about Thanksgiving? What customs surround it Its not just a meal and time with family is it?Theres obviously some histroy and cultural background and customs attached to it no What we (Scottish folks) do have to celebrate in November (30th) is St.Andrews day. Kinda lie St.Patricks day except Andrew is Scotlands patron saint and our Saltire on the Scotland flag represents the cross he was crucified on. TBH we dont make a big deal out of it like the Irish do with Paddys Day. We have a minor celebration of all things Scottish but the real Celebration of all things Scottish is a Burns Supper on 25th January. Thats when he get the haggis out and have a toast to it and recite the Bards famus poetry and sing his renowned songs. The night starts with a dram and a toast to the 'lassies', a toast to the haggis.... in fact pretty much a toast to anything cos its an excuse for yet another dram of whisey In all seriousness though threres a traditional ettiquette or protocol to the whole thing. The haggis is generally carried in on a silver salver by the Haggis bearer,at the start of the proceedings. As it is brought to the table a piper plays a suitable, rousing accompaniment on the bagpipes and everyone sings along to salute the haggis. Then theres a Master of Ceremonies who then recites the famous Burns Haggis poem before he performs a very theatrical cutting of the haggis with the ceremonial knife. He mutters some olde tongue Scottish words and people cheer. That part kinda goes over my head a little but all good fun. It can also drag on a bit too cos they literally have a fucking toast (poem or song) for EVERYTHING from the food to the lassies to the lads and then the lassies get to reply to the the lads and so forth,it drags on. For anyone who digs this kinda thing or wants to ecome culturally enlightened... or culturally confused! Then heres a typical order of service from the entertainment to the toasts to the food and all the other things that make up a Burns supper. http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/robertburns/burns_night_running_order.shtml This is the toast,or the Address to the Haggis. They take that shit seriously and it has to be recited in a loud groundsman Wullie type manner:tvlaugh: Its all very theatrical lol. Check this out, this is nothing special BTW,they actually have some real big posh Burns Suppers but heres a normal one that us common folks have. This is my one of the dinners laid on by a Rangers Football Supporters Club, kinda gives you an idea of the whole Haggis theatrics
Japanese cooking doesn't involve baking at all. Very few people have ovens in their house or apt. I'm going to buy one eventually, but they don't even sell proper ovens in the store. They have only different types of convection ovens. Ever heard of an infrared wave oven? Lol.
Have a great day GKers.:redbong: Burn one if appropriate asssit:, call your mom if you can:callme:, apologize to somebody if you need to.:color: Going hunting today then maybe cook up a pheasant for two (me an the pooch). GK wouldn't be shit without it's members...so I'm thankful for you fuckers. Best to all ya. edit: Ap, any day that involves haggis is a bad day. Thanksgiving is us (the US) celebrating that a bunch of communist puritan religious zealot settlers didn't starve to death before realizing the indians might know a thing or two and private ownership might be a good idea.
TA to sum it up, We Americans' like to celebrate the slaughter and conversion of indigenous people. That's why we rock :roffl: 'Merica...the only culture that thanks God for it's ability to kill efficiently but it's just a day to celebrate with family now Hank, really no ovens, do you guys have pizza or anything over there? Is it really just raw fish?
Eat drink smoke and be merry. I'm thankful for a lot of stuff today, but my family and freedom are at the top of the list.
BTW...do they ever actually eat the haggis, or do they just parade it around from hall to hall then store it until next year?
That made me LOL there Nippie Between that and Resins 'communist puritan religious zealot settlers ' comment, who says you Americans dont do sarcastic irony! So essentially what your saying is it started out like Chrstmas and now its just all about the holiday and the family get together and be grateful for what you've got in life.Thats the modern day take on it yeah?Sounds like a good thing man, people should take time out to appreciate what they do have instead of what they've not more often.Myself included Oh aye... yes, yes, yes that Haggis gets absolutely devoured Res! Ok im gonna be honest but lets keep it between us and i'll deny it if ever questioned.... Haggis, the way THEY eat it,isnt that tasty. Its far to bland and a little too caveman-esque for my liking.I thin its the fact that tradition states it MUST be served with Neeps n Tatties (turnip and mash) and i cant think of anything more band to go with bland lol. I hate boiled neeps, absolutely minging and the fact theres no gravy to pour over it all means is not got much taste.Put it this way, your aware your eating some weird shit...... HOWEVER>>>>>>>> FRY THAT SHIT IN A CHIP SHOP BATTER AND SERVE WITH CHIPS AND CHIP SHOP CURRY SAUCE AND WE'RE TALKING CULINARY GENIUS!! All the chippys back home sell Haggis Suppers alongside Fish n Chips. When its fried in a batter its nice, same with Black pudding alongside a fried egg,its like Food Crack:eusa_drool: I actually prefer black pudding to Haggis. But nah the Haggis that gets boiled inside the sheep intestine ,thats not too tasty without some salt, spice or sauce of some kind. Iv eaten a Haggis Curry in an Indian restaurant, its really nice.Iv also eaten Haggis Lasagne and Haggis Spaghetti Bolognese. Haggis & Donner Kebab piza with a chilli sauce base Mmmmmm:eusa_drool: Real nice!! So basically what im saying is its edible if you can smother it with artificial flavourings Shit man,its from Scotland,we deep fry pizzas and mars bars in batter up there and sell them in our chippys.I aint even kidding. The pizza crunch as its called is actually superb. One of the things i miss about home cos the chippys down here are shit.Back home all the chippys are Italian owned and they do Pizzas and a decent Ice Cream and shit. Down here the chippys are all owned by eastern european dudes and the batter they use is disgusting.Too thick and greasy. No one does chippys like the Italian-Scots:thumbsup: Wait a minute here Res...... are you not the guy that likes to eat them rocky mountain oysters or whatever their called? Hahaha. Now THAT is some freaky shit! Thats the kind of shit you eat for a dare. Although again,if it can be deep fried in batter then our chippy would sell it and we'd all still stagger in to the chippy for a late night munch to soak up the booze on your way home from the pub.And order The Oyster Supper (balls and chips lol). Id imagine brown sauce would taste good with that:eusa_drool: Anyways HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL YOU GUYS AND THANKS FOR BEING A SOLID GROUP OF STONERS IV HAD THE PLEASURE TO CALL FRIENDS OVER THE LAST 7 YEARSassit: Heres to absent friends too
Thanksgiving is not a religious holiday. It happens to be celebrated mostly by American christians but that is coincidental. The original thanksgiving was a harvest feast that the natives shared with early New England settlers. It really is just supposed to be about counting your blessings. Nowadays it's a national holiday and is family oriented usually. The day before thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year.
