Algae is more of a nusance than a problem. It can develop anywhere that light and moisture are present. It likes high temps and humidity. If using Rockwool, algae is common on the top of the cube. It is usually not an issue, but, if it gets too thick, it can choke off the air supply to the roots. Use a paper plate or piece of plastic to cover the cubes.

It can also form in the feed lines and reservoir. Use black tubing for the feed lines, and keep a lid on the ressy. Algae in the ressy can cause drastic Ph fluctuations.
