Ok, I consider myself a pretty good gardener when it comes to produce. I especially pride myself on my tomatoes - for the size of the rest of my garden, I usually end up with around 150# of tomatoes. I train them, love them, pick just the best heirloom strains, and usually end up with amazing plants and a bountiful harvest.

    SOOOOO.......

Why the FUCK can i NOT grow them in a 3 gal pot????? :angry5:

i have tried several times now, inside with supplemental lighting (basically mimicking MJ) and outside in front of my trailer. I end up with a stunted little plant with laughable tomatoes. Hardly even worthy of calling them cherries.

What gives? Are there specific types of tomatoes i have to use? (I stick with beefsteak - yum) They have small root systems, so I don't think it's the space. Good soil/compost/verm mix, nutes, water, good amount of sun - I don't get it.

    I'm so sad. :(

Anyone have better luck??? Advice for a tomato lover jonesing for tomatoes in January???

I tried this year in 5 gal buckets & got shity small tomato too. Don't know why but the buckets dry out fast & take a lot of water.-Bud

I think the problem is that with marijuana we are just producing large flowers instead of having to worry about producing large fruit or "vegetable" material. Root bound is a lot worse for putting on weight on tomatoes than it would be for flowers from pot. From what I understand hydroponics is the best way to go when growing fruits and vegetables inside.

Don't know a thing about indoor maters but get tons in 3 gallon pots on the deck every summer. I have to water nearly every day once they get sizable. They feed like a sonafabitch and are total hogs needing full dose ferts every week to stay healthy. I just use the same stuff that goes in my MJ garden and grow Early girl and Big Boy. Did Beefsteak's a few times but kept the skin kept splitting.

I grow beefsteak outside in 5 gallon buckets and compared to the ones in the ground, they are a lot smaller and not as plentiful. My peppers are just the opposite.

I've never seen good container tomatoes.

Not compared to mother earth anyway. Well, except in those pictures when there trying to sell something... And RR, But you need to realize he was probably stoned when he posted.

    :kidding:

But then, MJ doesn't grow as good in buckets, in my opinion. I think if you feed it right, it'll grow. I did read in garden book that too much nito will reduce yield.

    peace.

I don't much care for the hybrids myself. I prefer Heirloom tomatoes.....for me, I think they taste better! But hey....any tomato grown at home is waaaaaaaaay better than the ones you get at the store....they don't even smell like a tomato.....let alone taste like one!

We've got the same ones you're growing and they've had some on the plants that split as well...so it must be some kind of problem/situation that does that! I though it was that my mom's husband doesn't water them enough....'cause he doesn't!! But you say that you water yours well...so it must be something else that splits them!!

Tomatoes spilt due to being allowed to dry out too much then are given a lot of water all at once. Tomatoes need even daly waterings and prefer to not dry out completely between waterings. Too much water all the time and you'll get blossom end rot.

Edit: I think it's actually the reverse of that. My bad. Dry then wet can lead to blossom end rot and too wet leads to splitting.

That's exactly what he does!! He (my mom's hubby) forgets to water then over-waters!!

this is gonna sound nuts but works. If you want them tomatoes to go literally fucking nuts put a piece of galvanized pipe on the ground by the root base.

so if i wanted to grow in a bucket, stuff a pipe in the edge of the soil??? hmmm... experiment brewing.....

to my knowledge & experience, tomatoes like deep, infrequent waters. however, that might totally change when you throw them in a container. i'm mystified about the space thing though - tomatoes, when i pull them up at the end of the year, have a very small root system. not even 5 or so inches deep. i have them in a raised bed box this year (back home) and they've done great.

    *scratching head*

i will bump up the nutes, try not to fry them, and see what happens.....

yeah, i miss that smell and taste. the reason i am trying this is because when i left for work last month, my maters in ID were just getting full sized, none ready to eat. i was so bummed, so i wanted to try this out, to get some this fall anyway.... BF stuffs his face almost every night with fresh ones back home.... :( not fair.

If I had not seen that galvanized pipe thing with my own eyes at a aunts house who always grew huge tomatoes I would not have believed it.

She does not stick them in the ground just lays them by the stalk in the dirt.

I dont know if its something they like in the galvanized coating or what the deal is but they really grow and I mean huge.

hmmm.... galvanization is just a zinc coating. i didn't know tomatoes needed/liked zinc, i know they love calcium..... worth throwing a galv. nail in there though.... :thumbs-up:
