The drug trial of a painkiller containing cannabinoids, the active ingredient found in cannabis, has gone drastically wrong in France, leaving one person brain dead and five others in a serious condition.

France's health ministry said on Friday that the six volunteers at the facility in Rennes, Brittany, had been in good health until taking the oral medication, which was developed by "a European laboratory." French media have reported that the incident took place at the Biotrial clinic.

The ministry did not say what the medicine was intended to be used for or name the company involved, but one person familiar with the situation said the drug was a cannabis-based painkiller.

Britain's GW Pharma, which markets an approved cannabis-derived treatment for spasticity caused by multiple sclerosis, said it was not involved in the trial.

"This test was carried out at a private facility specialized in carrying out clinical trials," the ministry said in a statement.

The brain dead individual was admitted to hospital in Rennes on Monday. Other patients went in on Wednesday and Thursday. All trials on the drug have now been suspended and all volunteers who have taken part in the trial are being called back.

A spokeswoman for the European Medicines Agency in London said it did not have full details of the case but that it was monitoring the situation.

Cases of early-stage clinical trials going badly wrong are rare but not unheard of. The last drug trial disaster in Europe occurred in 2006, when six healthy volunteers given an experimental drug in London ended up in intensive care.

One of them was described as looking like "the elephant man" after his head ballooned. Another lost his fingertips and toes.

In the initial so-called Phase I stage of clinical testing, a drug is given to healthy volunteers to see how it is handled by the body and what is the right dose to give to patients.

"Undertaking Phase 1 studies is highly specialist work," said Daniel Hawcutt, a lecturer in clinical pharmacology at Britain's University of Liverpool. Medicines then go into larger Phase II and Phase III trials to assess their effectiveness and safety before they are finally approved for sale.

I thought most people smoked to quit taking pain pills, no wonder it went bad. Just smoke, vape or eat, dont mix with pills. Sometimg like marinol is different. Dam France people are not very smart at some things.

Lets see here. We got a perfectly safe organic readily available source that perfectly interacts with our own endocannabinoid system. So big pharm has to step in and figure out a way to do it more dangerously and less effectively? :BangHead:

The shame is since it's not a cannabis based medicine big Pharm gets a pass and it's biz as usual. Dead body, extreme neurological damage to testers...no biggie. If it turned out to really be cannabis based, well that would be huge news and some states/countries would react by further restriction on cannabis. Big bad cannabis....ugh.... :eusa_eh:

You want to know why it's fuckin' news? It's because everybody knows cannabis doesn't kill people. If we all thought cannabis was some dangerous killer drug, a death attributable to cannabis would be no different than another heroin overdose. Nothing to see, happens everyday in every city across the world.

It would be the same as another youth alcohol poisoning. Or, in this case, just another drug that kills put out by Big Pharm. Happens everyday. People expect alcohol, heroin, or Pharm drugs to kill you. Not so for cannabis....and everybody....everybody...even the cop politician zealot hypocrites trying to keep Prohibition know it, and that's why it's fuckin' news. Every Prohibitionist out there wants to be the first person in 6000 years to record the first death attributed to cannabis. It's the holy grail of news for those twisted fucks. Methinks I like our track record better than theirs though.

Dude, it's absolutely laughable. I been to my state legislature during cannabis hearings. The last was a couple years ago when they decided the Mayo Institute and big biz are the only folks qualified to do cannabiz in our fair state.

Um....have you guys looked at how many folks Pharm and big biz kill every year? And the biggest argument they have against us local producers is that some underaged kid somewhere might get high? It doesn't even equate to a rational mind. But to Prohibitionists it's the most evil thing in the world.

Better somebody should die at the hands of the "approved" providers using stupid ass chem knock offs of the real thing? Better a person in need of cannabis medicine go without and suffer? Better all that than some kid getting his hands on a joint and get high? And we all know kids can't get weed unless it legal, right?

its really sad that people go and test these pills for either pay or to find some treatment and they have people have strokes and other stuff also leaving them messed up. Wonder where you can find that info. They prob pay big to keep it hidden.
