I have my seedlings under some floros right now. I am wanting to speed the veg process along. I have a 400w HPS that I have used for flowering for my past grows. I am wondering if I used the HPS with the floros for vegging would that speed growth? Or just the HPS alone. I know a MH light is better for veg, but money does not allow the purchase of a new light. Opinions please. Peace.....
well i dont see anything wrong with it... you can veg with hps, is it going to be faster than using just floros????? it will be better but not sure if faster... we know that hps is better than just using floros but since you are using both and dont have the money to get a mh bulb then go at it... just my 2 cents :growin:
its your preference i have had this conversation with lots of growers on here and it seems to be a matter of preference....some like hps all the way from beginning to end...some like mh first 8 weeks then hps after that...some like fluros then hps ...and some like a combination... i use fluros for the first 3 weeks...then hps for the next 3 weeks of veg...then switch to flower...using stronger light...my intermediate light is 2 150w hps...then a 600w hps... but i think to answer your question...the more lumens per sq ft the better....minimum is around 50 per square foot...up to 80-90 would be great....just be careful on the little ones...let them get some roots and make sure they are not too close... hope this helps some....good luckkk i konw this is as clear as mud...lolasssit:
With HPS you should get faster growth as well as shorter internode length. If you have room, I'd use them both and get a full spectrum on them. -tC
I vegged a little under my HPS last grow and the results were quite good. It really comes down to how much light your fluros are putting out. When I vegged under my HPS, internodes were very noticably more compact, as was the plant as a whole. It's worth noting that although it was more compact, it produced the same amount of budding sites. If nothing is in your flower area and you have the time / power to be able to veg under the HPS I'd certainly give it a shot - if your HPS is much more powerful than your fluros you'll likely be very pleased with the results.
It's all about light intensity. Your HPS will have a much better light penetration to the lower branches. Also will reduce stretch and increase bushiness as apposed to the flouros. I veg under fluoros now but I plan on switching to MH HID lighting to increase penetration for my mothers and larger vegging plants. Thicker canopy with more branches and less internode spacing equals more bud sites and higher yield. Fluoros are fine for vegging clones for a few weeks but beyond 10" plants they don't offer enough light penetration and the plants begin to stretch and the lower branches will not keep up and begin to get shaded by the main canopy. IMO I would go ahead and use the HPS, I think it will give you more growth in a shorter period.
