Columbian Red So basically they only had 5 or 6 names and they just mixed 'em all up any way they'd go. WOW!! that is some really shitty looking pot. And that's the BEST that '77 had to offer. I throw away trim that looks better than that. I was recently talking with Rky about the fact that my Hawaiian Skunk harvest (that came out kinda airy for some reason, but still looks 1000% times better than anything on that list) isn't hardly good enough to sell these days. In 77, it would've blown away everything on that list. Today = oop: Boy, how the standards have changed. I was 8 years old in '77. Did any of you old heads get the pleasure of smoking any of this schwag? :anibong:
Fuck dude, I got a headache just reading this thread. I remember the first pot I had was all stems and seeds and VERY little green leafy substance . . . I guess I was smoking the BOMB SHIT for back then.:rofl6: AJ - It seems your HS wasn't bad, but I'm not smoking it.:kidding: I actually smoked a bowl and it was pretty nice. Not as nice as mine, but nice still.:kidding: :rofl6::alienwink:
I had the pleasure of smokeing michoacan and thai sticks. The michoacan was great looking turquoise green looking shit with great bag appeal. The thai sticks were fantastic. but you gotta remember most of the time we were smokeing mexican brick for ten bucks a four finger bag so anything better was always killer. Teamster6
I remember forking over 35 dollars for a 'lid' of Redbud back in 1978. You rarely found anything other than seedy-assed schwag back then. It was unbelievable! By today's standards...it was schwag.
Is it me or did I see seeds in most of those "buds". Nobody here would stand for seedy buds now days. But, since all my weed burned up with my apartment. I would pick out the seeds and smoke it anyways. :rofl6: :rofl6: Peace....
WOAH! you guys smoked that shit? How the times have changed. Props to all the breeders, that have brought us from there to here.
shadowman i love your avatar i first smoked in '67 when i was twelve and we got it from my buds dad and he was only 10 but just moved near me (on another farm, they were hippies from new york city) i never did hear a name for it...first names of pot i remember came from listening to cheech and chong albums...i lived in maine back then ...i guess by the time pot got that from where it was grown names didnt really matter...lol....:alienwink: :alienwink: :alienwink:
I can totally relate to T6 & Shadowman Hash only came around during the holidays; now it's non-existent, unless I make it).
Cheech and Chong are the only reason I recognize some of those names. I started smoking mexican scwhag in Cali back in '82, and we weren't getting weed anywhere near that nasty looking.
Back in the day....we generally had shitty weed. Like T6, Thai Stick was always nice. Potent, big expansion. We thought it was pricey as hell at $15 a stick. The Thai we got rarely had a seed and even then it was usually a pale immature thing. Knowing what I do now it was likely due to high rates of herms in Thai pot. "Lumbo" was everything that couldn't be called something else. True gold was always bricked up and tinder dry by the time it reached the market. Still took a few hits to start a decent buzz. Always seedy. Was nothing to find a couple hundred seeds in a zip. The best of those days was Hawaiian sinemilla. Like $130 a zip in 1979. Closest thing to what we grow now. You could actually see trichs (first time I saw actual trichs was on Hawaiian bud) Emerald green with little gold leaves running through it. Not actually nuggs but more like a tight flower. True one hit weed.....but we were used to shitty weed...remember? Oaxacan looked like shit, smelled like nothing and hit like a train. Creeper weed that had no bag appeal at all. I think it's one of the most underestimated strains of the era. Hooked into a supply for about 6 months in 1980. The cat couldn't give it away it was so fugly. Could pick up a 4 finger "lid" for $30-$40 or a qp for $100 Compared to what comes out of my garden today? I wouldn't pay $2 for an ounce of any of it.
Thanks AJ....man, I seriously never had an IDEA why my uncle thought the what-I-considered-swag weed was so good. How fucking far we have come is amazing to me. It is like a completely different looking plant how we grow it today. Makes me feel better about what I am smoking while on grow-hiatus. Kinda like being able to drink PBR and feel a connection to the good ol` days, lol. :bong-2:
Lmao i was only 10,but my brothers 15 and 19 smoked "IL green" that look'd wayyy better than that ......:roffl: Bud3
I lived and grew in Hawaii in 77. All I can say is if my bud ever looked like that I would have been laughed off of the Island!
LOL, well I agree those buds are uglier than shit, but dont kid yurselves, children! I smoked a lot of those listed and trust me when I say, they kicked ass. Only real diff these days is, today's LOOK, smell and taste much better. But the kick ass part....hasnt improved all that much. Two tokes put you on your ass, just like now. Sorta like drinking Crown Royal or Moonshine---one tastes great, the other burns your guts, but they BOTH get you to the exact same place. And SOME of those listed tasted and smelled pretty damn good, too. Everything was grown outside and it was RARE to have no seeds, tho. Plus, we didnt have crosses between Sats and Indies that I know of. I do remember some serious couch lock, LOL...other times, we'd say, "wow, this is real UP dope!" Now I realize why, LOL, but back then, the diff was WHERE it came from. Obviously some countries produced Sats, others, Indies. Plus, there was ALWAYS Mexican Dirt Weed, LOL. It sucked then and it still does! Remember---those old strains are the grandparents of everything we smoke today---have a little respect for the OLDIES! Dixie
True dat. The first pretty weed I ever saw was Acapulco Gold, big fat golden nugs, gorgeous aroma. Then the BEST dope came along from Viet Nam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand... At least one good thing came out of the war. Dixie
Oh yeah, it all had seeds! As I recall, the first sensi came from Jamaica and we were all..."Well...where's the seeds, man?" LOL! We used to take a new baggy of weed (called a "lid" because they used the lid of a Prince Albert tobacco can to measure it out---about 3/4 oz). You'd dump your lid out onto al album cover, then take a playing card and begin to toss it. The seeds would roll to the bottom. But you'd keep the seeds....and when you ran out, you'd clean the seeds again....hoping for enough weed to roll just one more joint. There's a song from the 70's that goes "When it gets dry and you wanna get high... ya gotta clean them seeds, just one more time! Granny, wont ya smoke some, granny wont ya smoke some, granny wont ya smoke some MARY-Ja-WANNA?" Cant think of the name of the guy who wrote/sang it...same guy who wrote, "Gentle on My Mind". Damn...must be having one a them senior moments.... JOHN HARTFORD!!! haHA! Yep...little Johnnie Hartford. Used to be a fairly regular guest on The Smothers Brothers. Oh jesus, Im old. check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Et66tGRhp4w Dixie
In 1975 I was in the Air Farce, stationed in Del Rio, Tx.-right on the Mexican border. My roomies and I met this Dude from Kentucky in a bar one night. He had a "business" that imported really nice wool sweaters from Oaxaca. He would travel to the interior and buy these sweaters and would also buy about 10 keys of the Oaxacan bud. His associate would bring the sweaters across and he, having gotten out of the car outside of town on the mexican side, would lay low till nightfall. He would cross the Rio grand in trail of some illegal immigrants. My roomies and I rented a small house about 1/4 mile from the river. He would show up at our back dooor, usually around midnight, and would lay over at our place for a few hours to rest. In exchange for that he would give us about 4-5 ounces of the bud. Yeah, it looked about what high times showed, but relative to the usual mexican dirt we were smoking, it was pretty good shit for the day. But anything we grow today would have taken "Bud of the century" compared to what was around in the early 70's. Budz:anibong::anibong::anibong:
a little treat for those of us old enough to have actually owned a record album...or used one to clean weed on, LOL.
