My wife just got a Strawberry plant as a gift, and we were considering putting it under the lights, but I have no idea how the flowering cycle or anything will affect them, not to mention the use of nutrients.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I thought I'd post here first to give time for answers to pop up... In the meantime I'm going to fire up Google and Wiki and see what they can tell me. :)

I tried it, killed it. From what I understand, and I think AB told me this, strawberry plants have an opposite light cycle from marijuana, as in 24/0 makes the berries while 12/12 makes the plant grow.

I may be way off, but I think that is right. :bong-2:

Strawberries are not a photoperiod flowering plant. I think they are perpetuals. I do not see why it would not flourish.

This was already on my mind, I'm pretty paranoid about that.. Although I don't know if it's actually beneficial I was considering quarantining that plant before hand if anything... Of course, before I went ahead and did so I'd want to be very sure it was clean, and that the quarantine was actually useful. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Of course, if there's no way to be sure, there's no way it's going in my grow room...

None the less, thanks for the extremely important advice GTWT!

Also thanks to USMC and Lion, I'm reading a little bit about growing them hydroponically now. :)

Use some neem every third day for two week and quarantine it for at least 2 weeks under a cfl in a box or something. Then you can move t to the vegetative or flower area. They like wide shallow root spaces and will spread n a large container. moderate feeders that can and will thrive indoors. They prefer a slightly acidic soil and need at least six hours a day of light.

and just say no to bugs......myself, i would just grow it in the living room under a cfl.

i brought some lettuce seedlings into my veg room, and POW!! .......the arachnidious mitus motherfuckerous appeared....(AKA spider mites, and fungus gnats)

they spread, and got into my flower room, and now i am wondering how the hell i'm gonna get the neem taste off my chronic that WAS sceduled to be chopped on the 17th.....like today....

    NOT WORTH IT.

Actually some varieties are photoperiod sensitive and they will veg in early spring produce fruit in June as the days get longer and keep producing through July.

Other types are called "Everbearing," they will keep producing strawberries as long as it is warm enough and the photo period is 12/12 or higher. And example of these are "Red Alpine." They are small, but will keep producing non-stop for up to 3 years.

Then there are the "Day-Neutral," which will produce as long as there is at least 6 hours of "daylight." Some say they will produce with even shorter days, but I have not seen it happen.

Spinkler, do you know what type of Strawberries you have?

I have grown strawberries, but the birds always got them before they were ripe. I expect they will like to veg along with your vegging plans and prob like the same nutes. When you flower your MJ, just let the SB go along with them...I expect that since SB's "know" when it's time to produce, based on hours of sun/dark, they will produce right along with your MJ buds. Let us know how they do--

I saw some strawberries a few years ago that were as big as a nutsack. Biggest things I have ever seen.

Fragaria ananassa, apparently.. Standard garden strawberries from what I can gather. It says on the label "Full Sun" and "Harvest Spring/Summer", not sure if that helps.

That means it's the "June Bearing" type, but since you are in the Southern Hemisphere, I guess that would be "December Bearing."

Anyway, those are the types that have the photoperiod that is opposite of Marijuana, so they may not work too well in your growing room. Might be best to just plant them outdoors.

Thanks again for all the advice. We'll be keeping it outdoors, then! :beerchug-2:
