I have two seed heat mats. GREAT for starting seeds and clones in cool weather. Use em all the time. But this morning when I went to check to see if any of my Gorilla Grape had sprouted (after six days of waiting) I happened to TOUCH the mat the seed tray was on and that sucker was WAY too hot. MUCH hotter than the other one. They dont have a "control", they're not supposed to GET too hot. Im guessing it's internal thermostat went BLOOEY. So....Id say there's a good chance I aint gonna see any GG. Thats 100 bucks down the tubes... Oh happy day. Dixie
Aw Dixie, sorry to hear. Just remove the heat mat and give it some more time, just in case. You never know! Sending good luck vibes!! asssit:
We always sprout our seeds in a towel or napkin then transfer into soil after they sprout, may be worth a try, and yes your seeds have probably had it if they have not surfaced by now, sorry to hear of your troubles
And we have not found much use for our seed mats either, other than them not working or doing what they did for you.
Oh, yes, I had already done that. Yhey soaked in water for 24 hours, then went to the damp paper towel for two days until they popped and I saw tap root...then into the Jiffy's in a seed try on top of the heat mat. It's about 65 degrees in my house...and Ive had seeds fail to sprout under 70 degrees. So, I always use the heat mat except in the summer. Just...looks like my poor old heat mat is broken. Thanks Dixie
LOL! well at least its not JUST ME! Ive had it I guess a year or more...maybe they arent built to last that long. They are really good for clones in the winter.
yes...Im still in hope mode. There is OINE little tiny green bump on the surface....one is all I neeed IF it's a GIRL! My luck, I get OINE...and it's a male. thanks for the good vibes. Dixie
Dix- If you like heat mats don't get the ones from a garden center. Buy a cheap wet/dry heating pad at the pharmacy for $15. To use the mat simply cover it with a thin piece of plywood then put your seeded plants on top. It never gets too hot that way. good luck darlin,
Too long Personally, I dont like the idea of soaking a full 24hrs. Ive soaked 3 times to date. 8-10 hrs twice, 24 hrs once. Went 10/12 with bagseed the 8-10 hour way. Went 0/7 the 24 hour way...NUFF SAID! Then off to 6 layers of moist paper towels in the dark it is. 24-36 hours later, good to go! I let them go like that til I have about an inch of taproot showing, then off to a 3" pot they go and we're off to the races! Peace, JJb :bong-2:
A inch taproot??? Sounds kind of long to me. Try going to 4mm after cracking and dont plant deep. Cheers Teamster6
peat pucks or rapid rooter plugs Go ahead and buy 1 has cheap nursery heating mats just be sure and by the temperature control that goes with them most people by the heating mat and don'ts bring the extra money to buy a thermostat to control the temperature most seeds like to start at around 75 degrees that's some hasn't lotsa peppers like to start in the mid to upper eighty's:thumbs-up:
Heck, ill camp out in ur basement for a couple years if a lil GG is all you need... Ill keep my paws crossed for your one shinning ray of hope
I think the critical part is seeing that taproot! I dunno about an INCH, LOL...but for sure at least 1/4" -1/2." Im looking foreward to the Great Day when I have a collection of Bonsai Moms.....screw the whole seed thing...grumble, cuss.... Dix
I guess he means like this............Hey Hey I forgot about these. cheers Teamster6 This ones off topic a little but how about this tap root!! I had to laugh reading another site how these guys say not to grow in jiffys because it restricts the roots!! I DONT HAVE THAT PROBLEM!
