so, a new study has determined that alcohol is indeed more dangerous than lots of other things. including MJ, something all of us here already know. funny how it's GB that does the study, not the $ controlled US with Bud and all the other big corps controlling everything....

I particularly chuckle at the last line...... DUH.

Study: Alcohol more lethal than heroin, cocaine

By MARIA CHENG, AP Medical Writer – Sun Oct 31, 8:08 pm ET

LONDON – Alcohol is more dangerous than illegal drugs like heroin and crack cocaine, according to a new study.

British experts evaluated substances including alcohol, cocaine, heroin, ecstasy and marijuana, ranking them based on how destructive they are to the individual who takes them and to society as a whole.

Researchers analyzed how addictive a drug is and how it harms the human body, in addition to other criteria like environmental damage caused by the drug, its role in breaking up families and its economic costs, such as health care, social services, and prison.

Heroin, crack cocaine and methamphetamine, or crystal meth, were the most lethal to individuals. When considering their wider social effects, alcohol, heroin and crack cocaine were the deadliest. But overall, alcohol outranked all other substances, followed by heroin and crack cocaine. Marijuana, ecstasy and LSD scored far lower.

The study was paid for by Britain's Centre for Crime and Justice Studies and was published online Monday in the medical journal, Lancet.

Experts said alcohol scored so high because it is so widely used and has devastating consequences not only for drinkers but for those around them.

"Just think about what happens (with alcohol) at every football game," said Wim van den Brink, a professor of psychiatry and addiction at the University of Amsterdam. He was not linked to the study and co-authored a commentary in the Lancet.

When drunk in excess, alcohol damages nearly all organ systems. It is also connected to higher death rates and is involved in a greater percentage of crime than most other drugs, including heroin.

But experts said it would be impractical and incorrect to outlaw alcohol.

"We cannot return to the days of prohibition," said Leslie King, an adviser to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and one of the study's authors. "Alcohol is too embedded in our culture and it won't go away."

King said countries should target problem drinkers, not the vast majority of people who indulge in a drink or two. He said governments should consider more education programs and raising the price of alcohol so it isn't as widely available.

Experts said the study should prompt countries to reconsider how they classify drugs. For example, last year in Britain, the government increased its penalties for the possession of marijuana. One of its senior advisers, David Nutt - the lead author on the Lancet study - was fired after he criticized the British decision.

"What governments decide is illegal is not always based on science," said van den Brink. He said considerations about revenue and taxation, like those garnered from the alcohol and tobacco industries, may influence decisions about which substances to regulate or outlaw.

"Drugs that are legal cause at least as much damage, if not more, than drugs that are illicit," he said.

You're right GTWT, something pot smokers have known for years. Unfortunately it just keeps falling on deaf ears.

I support that assertion 100%. I've seen so many studies on this topic posted in so many different journals.

In my line of work it's not uncommon for somebody to ask me what is THE "hardest" drug. What is the "worst" drug? My answer has always been alcohol. When people talk about so-called "gateway drugs", I've rarely heard alcohol mentioned.

    amen to that shit.

almost EVERY SINGLE time i've been arrested, alcohol was involved.

every time i was ever hit by a car, i was drinking.

most fights, most arguments, most bad decisions were all alcohol related.

alcohol killed my pops,(liver) killed my friends, (lots of car crashes) sent lots to prison....just off the top of my head....booze killz.

OFO, they are also taking into account the effects it has on others around you, etc. spouse abuse from drunks, DUI's, liver disease, all that.

theres also A LOT more drinkers on the planet than anything else too. that i think played a huge part in their research.

as far as being safe behind a wheel, i've driven on acid, and ecstasy, and those were just as unsafe as being hammered. it's really sixes on that being safer...

i personally think, with all the legal and illegal drug abuse, they should legalize it all, or make it all illegal. i can't stand the fact that (drinkers) people will honk about how horrible MJ or other stuff is, but alcohol is A-OK. dumb brainwashed fucks.

I think the reason MJ is so high on the list is because it's still illegal in most areas and anyone bust WILL have negative impacts placed on that person and their families. Duh!

I believe if MJ was legal it would be down the scale near mushrooms.:shroom:

Progess is being made it seems . . . finally!

Yeah dude, alcohol has caused me many problems in my life as well. Weed, none.

I tell people here that all the time. I tell them I started smoking at 12 and that pot has never affected me negatively, but alcohol has many times because it is so much more dangerous. I tell them about the vote in California. I tell them that their gov. has lied to them about pot being dangerous. I tell them they shouldn't trust their gov. so unquestioningly. I tell them they shouldn't be so obedient.

They smile and nod their heads. Their eyes glaze over. They mentally recede into the safety and comfort of the herd. "Ah, so desu ka?"

I smile back. It's best not to startle them.

....and others that do it around you...
For many years in my 20's it was all or nothing. Beer, coke, pot, K, dope. Most on the same night. Still had a job, truck and, a place to live. PAID for. But, still did everything they made, to fuck you up. No way would I condone that now but, I functioned. I guess yous'd call me an animal, certainly the folks I was hanging out with played a big part.

Old age gives me perspective....I do drink still. But would it be harmful to me or others? Hardly, I fall asleep after 3 beers. Maybe 10 on a weekend but I certainly ain't driving nowhere. I do smoke still. Is it harmful to others? How would it be? However.....I have to smoke while working. I work outside in the blazing Gulf sun with a-hole homeowners most of the time. If I didn't smoke or wear sunglasses while doing such I'd snap.

What I hate the most is my dad feels perfectly fine bringing his own beer to my apartment but he will take one hit with me if I BEG him and he gets all mean and embaressed about it. I HATE beer and alcohol except for once every 6 months or so, but he will drink a 6 pack or more in front of me. I mention weed like one time and he starts to get seriously pissed off.

And go home and smoke an 1/8 by himself.

I swear if he would get over his brainwashing we would be MUCH closer. We are currently not close at all :(

Might I suggest you start by not "begging" him Canna. It's one of the most annoying things a person can do.

If he wants a toke and it's his decision he'll take one. He's an adult. He knows you toke and you know he tokes. If you badger him into sharing "one" hit and it's done so you feel better then its a patronizing gesture. One that he obviously resents having to do. If he's not comfortable toking with his daughter that is HIS choice.

You might be closer if you'd let the man be and respect his boundaries even if you disagree with them.

As for drinking in your home.....I don't drink, but allow my parents to in my home because I enjoy their company, respect their life choices and want them to feel comfortable. It's a very small price.

ur right......and I have not asked in a long long time.....yanno it just would be very cool. I let him drink in my house, i don't give him crap for that. at least he doesn't mind me smoking while he is drinking. could be worse. maybe someday he will be ok with it. if prop 19 passed hed probly be better as I have a card and he doesn't, but I will try not to badger him. he does enjoy what I give him for free though, i just wish he'd let me be there ;)
