Ok, so my BF owes the taxman a decent chunk of change. IN a nutshell, he started working for a guy/asshole as a subcontractor for the first time in his life, without really knowing wtf it was all about, and after his first year, owed about 15000 in taxes, where he had only saved up ~3. no one told him all that stuff, percentages, etc. lesson learned, do your homework first. he doesn't find out until almost halfway into the second year of work, too late to start saving more.

so here we are 3 years later, he hasn't started making payments yet, because he doesn't have that kind of cash. he no longer works for the asshole, but now he's making beans at another job, just enough to cover the necessities - car payment, gas, food, etc.

taxman is practically beating down our door. they told us we would have to settle something soon, already filed a lien on him for $.

as soon as that happens, we start getting things in the mail from lawyers, "tax settlement" companies, and the like.

anyone know anything about companies like this? are they scams, or sneaky bastards, or can they actually settle with the IRS for a break??? anyone???

I've never had experience with them, but I do know that if you are able to prove that you are just getting by you can go on Currently Not Collectable status. I haven't looked too deep into doing it yourself, but filing is a service provided by the aforementioned groups.

Get a good accountant, collect as many write off receipts as possible then go face the music. Odds are that with write offs the burden will be a fraction of what the IRS claims he owes. Worst case is that the accountant forestalls any levy against bank accounts while the he gets things pieced together. Once they get their hooks into you they'll levy your bank accounts every couple months seizing everything in there until they get whatever they claim he owes......which is usually an inflated amount.

A ton of those guys you advertising are overpriced sheisters preying on the frightened. Get a referral from a well heeled friend about who they use for personal income tax work. If their accountant doesn't do this type of work they will be able to point you in the right direction.

good luck GTWT....this shit really stinks!

already did that, the 15000 is what's left. same accountant i use for my biz, one of the best in town.

i was afraid there's not much you can do. as far as proving you are only 'getting by' it's hard for him to do right now, as he started a biz of his own, alongside the beans-paying job. i remember when i first started my biz and i was flat broke, it was really hard for me to get food stamps/other temporary help, because they told me "i had the potential" to make more money at any time, and then i would be taking advantage of the govt services. wtf. cocksuckers.

keep fingers crossed that we win lottery :roffl:

sorry to hear about your issues

the taxman is a bitch for sure....i had a rather large tax bill in 1999 as a result of selling a house for big profits and at the same time i took out money from 401k....

to make a long story short i ended up oweing about 65k...i started making payments and did so until i owed about 10k and that was in 2008...and then i called one of those guys that you see on tv...he charged me one months payment...(per my arrangement with irs) which was about 400 bucks and he made a phone call to irs and then called me back and we ended up oweing 600 dollars ...i ended up paying 400 for the guy and 600 for the remaining tax bill and saved the remaining 9k that i owned ......so in my opiniion i wish i had called them earlier...now the other thing is you can do the same thing he can , meaning call up the irs and find out what you can do to make a deal with them....they dont want to chase you forever either....at least make some arrangements with them...and send something ....if your payment is 100 bucks...try to send at least 50 or something...as long as its somehting they will string you along...and not put you in jail...if you dont play along with them they can be very nasty....good luck...
