yes you can grow with it, but it puts out way too much heat and not enough lumens for the wattage it uses... and the spectrum is off just a bit... but people in the 70's used them cause they cost a lot less than the HPS 's of the time or the MH's of the time. They put out A LOT OF HEAT. Get you a HPS(high pressure sodium)or a MH( metal halide)..cause when it comes to HID efficiency is the key..
I found this on a site... Mercury Vapor 175w = 8000 400 watts = 20k lumens...so i dont think they work too well
