I take it you are asking if GK is a new OG?

These lamps are the oldest of the HID family, and very inefficient by todays standards. Last I looked, the output was around 60 lumens per watt.

I don't reccommend it for any garden.

If that is all u can find then get it and put a metal halide lamp in it.they make a 175 Mh lamp and it costs like 16 bux.it will be great for vegging...throw the mercury vapor bulb away..and use the metal halide.. or you could just save that money and get a nice 250 or 400 hps off inside sun for like 90 to 100 U.S. dollars.

I can make metal halide "grow lights" all day long with remote housed ballasts and reflectors for under 50 bucks. In fact, I've made 4 such lights already. They all work great. Granted I didn't spend anything on the ballasts themselves, but they are purchasable for around 35 bucks. With that figured in, it costs me about 50 bucks.

You can purchase everything off of ebay and Home Depot. For all the money people spend on shit flo tubes, you could easily have a great HID setup. Just takes some know-how and thought. I really don't see what the big deal is about getting an HID. If you can't invest 50-60 bucks on a light, then IMO, you have no business growing weed indoors. It's not the cheapest hobby, but with 200 bucks and some space, I have the means to grow almost a pound and a half of bud every 2 months. That's less than most people spend on a single ounce of good weed on the street.

and how exactly might a person make a good light for $35, this would be great information to share :)

The light, when it's fully complete will cost about 50 bucks. The setup that I'm showing parts for is for a 1000 watter, which is a little more expensive. But it's cheap on ebay right now. Sometimes 400 watters are cheap, just depends on what's for sale.

    You need these things:

We'll say that's 60 bucks delived to your door.

Next you need an army surplus ammo can. You can find these cheap at army surplus stores. I bought one for 2 bucks.

Then you need a heavy duty extension cord. You probably have one or you can get one somewhere with little or no cost.

Then you need a piece of steel to make a reflector out of. I use joyce pans from the heating and cooling department of Lowe's. This costs $4.26.

Next you need a lamp socket. You can get this at any electrical store/hydro store/ or ebay for under 10 bucks.

And finally, you can get a bulb on ebay for roughly 15 bucks.

So for a 1000 watt metal halide system, I'd be paying about 80 bucks at the most. And that 1000 watt system is all you need. You can flower under it (and some people say HPS is better for flowering, but there is valid evidence to suggest otherwise).

80 bucks... 1000 watts brand new. How in the hell can you beat that?

ANyways... the 35 dollar figure you're talking about is for the ballast by itself. For an extra 15 bucks, you get the rest.

And yes, those ballasts are for sale on ebay for 35 bucks. I don't see one right now, but they're always up there... just keep checking.

    edit...

    here's a cheap one -

TY....but damn you! i really wanted a $35 light :( i can get a refurb 250 HPS on inside sun for like $85. next paycheck my new box is getting built and i'm either getting a 100 watt CFL or a 150 watt HPS cant wait...

well... if you only want 200 watts, it's cheaper.

You could be set up for 35 bucks... Check this out.

now you need a ballast housing, a cord, a socket and a bulb... probably about 45 bucks altogether.

to bad that setup is only 70 watts though. flash if your going to spend $85 on a 250 watt you may want to consider a 400W for $90 from insidesun off of ebay they are selling the 400w on there for $110 shipped and the shipping for the 250 is the same price you'll just be spending $5 more. thats were i got mine and it arrived in three days.
