As it goes on I'm more and more prone to agree with you about the good of the protesters Nip. Albeit for different reasons. Bloomberg has fucked this entire thing up and the way NYC chose to handle protesters is exactly why the hygiene problems are occurring. Once it was obvious the people were in it for the long haul and no action to physically remove them was going to take place it was the city's responsibility to ensure public safety and neighborhood commerce. That includes making sure there aren't turds in the grass and the gutter doesn't become a urinal. It's a simple public health issue and ultimately Bloomberg's responsibility. Since the protesters were allowed to stay the most rational solution would have been for the city to simply station porta potties and be done with it. I don't for a second buy into the crime and drug use crap. Think of any public gathering in any major metro and you have instances of crime and drug use. This is no different. Besides, my guess is you'd be a hell of alot safer hanging out with the protesters at 2am than taking a leisurely stroll through Central Park

A study of arrest records showed that most of the protesters are from middle class homes averaging a few 100k a house. A good majority are students while the rest are of a mix of people like us, the fucked, getting by, and even those that are doing OK but still not like they should be. They are not bums, they are protesters. No one has ever suggested that they are bums in arrest records or otherwise. I am sure one or two homeless showed up for a meal, but I doubt they stayed around to be arrested.
