I am allergic to animals. At least my doctor thinks so.

For the past several months I have had a cough, sneezing, post nasal drip and a sore throat. I went out of town for 9 days and it all went away nearly overnight. I came back and its back. The doc did a skin prick test and thinks I am allergic to the dander of dogs and cats.

Problem. I am a vet tech. I also have three cats, two dogs, hamsters and birds and I don't plan to change that! I guess it's common for people who work closely with animals to develop the allergies over time.

Sincerly - doomed to allergy medication for the rest of my friggin life! Any of you have animal allergies, what works for you? I am trying Zyrtec and Claritin and have a prescription for astepro spray (but can't stand it).

I mean. I just have to laugh.......it's like.....of course this would happen to me of all people. At least I already vacuum a lot. I am also getting a hepa filter.

mY sister is allergic to her own sweat, heat and animals. They all send her into anaphylax shock!

Im good with an Epi pen :thumbs-up:

Thing is though its also got a lot to do with her state of mind. She suspetiple to depression. When shes happy it totally subsides (3 years ish no problems). If a dog licked her we'd be fucked, but sweat and heat have no effect most the time.

I totally believe cleanliness is a major culprit. My mam was very clean, not OCD or anything but everything was clean. Cleaners, sprays and detergents cause ppl to become too sensitive to alergens.

I live in a dusty house for 2 reasons:

    Im lazy

    and

    it good for you :)

Allergies are weird like that...sometimes the more you are around things like dander the better you handle it and sometimes not. They say age introduction helps, but I am not sure about that.

We have two dogs and two cats. I had no problems with phlegm in the morning or anything (I don't have any medical "allergies") until we adopted the long haired second cat. I just wasn't used to it (AND we quite smoking in the house). Also the city we moved to has completely different pollen than where we were before, doesn't help at first.

OK, no useful information, but just saying, I feel for you, and sometimes it can be as simple as eating local honey, or as hard as constant pills. :smoke2:

i found out i'm allergic to particulates. anything dry that is in the air - like when you see the crazy shit in the sun rays in the window? yeah, that's everywhere. for the longest time i couldn't figure out what i was allergic to, because no one thing in particular would "set me off" i would just start sneezing itchy face red eyes for no reason whatsoever. i seriously would start sneezing sometimes when i brushed my own hair. wtf.

anyways, something i'm looking into, my friends have recommended highly is the kenalog shot. i've got a few girlfriends that used to take 5+ zyrtec a day just to keep the symptoms mild, went and got the kenalog shot, and now there's no problem at all. worth talking to your doc about, i'm going to be looking into it as soon as i get the $ to go to the doc.

it does have a few side effects, look it up online for yourself. but as far as allergies, not much else is out there that's stronger, that i've heard of anyway.

sux about the animal thing, i wouldn't be able to function without my dogs in my life  :dog2:

hope you can figure something out, girly! allergies are a downer fo sho!!!

    peace

I think so, too. Japanese people are really into cleaning and seem almost afraid of dirt, but there is a really high level of different allergies here. I read an article once by a Japanese doctor who had worked in poor areas of Malaysia and he pointed out that, although living conditions were dirty by Japanese standards, people were generally healthier.

I also wonder if some of your health problems, Canna, couldn't be psychosomatic.

Taking Bee Pollen pills from local bees helps as well!!

I have to do that every time I move to a new place!

If you can afford to, get rid of your carpeting.....tile or wood floors are the way to go!!

I'm sorry Little Sister!! I KNOW how much you love, love, love your animals!!!

Ouch Canna, that really sucks. That must be a horrible feeling for you. I dont have any good advice to offer you, fortunately your family here at GK seems to have provided you with some solid advice :thumbs-up: Im now down to ZERO furry friends, all of my current pets swim. I had to let me dog go Im afraid, he got quite a bit bigger than his mother and I just couldnt provide him with the necessary exercise he needed on a daily basis. I killed me to let him go, but I couldnt be happier about where he went to, a million times better home for him. (free range on 86 acres with a new friend, a 2yr old EXTREMELY well trained lab/shepherd mix just like he was).

Getting off topic here, Canna I hope it all works out for you and you can continue to do what you love. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

    Peace -V420

Oh....man does that suck. Jeeeez....I hope the filter works for you. And the vaccing will help. But...what about at work? Im guessing your doc gave you an Rx of some kind? Can you take Benadryl? It makes some people sleepy, others, not.

FWIW, I USED to be allergic to dogs/cats, but for unknown reasons, my allergy just...went away. Thank god. Maybe yours will go as quickly as it came.

Meantime try the various new allergy drugs. Ive heard Clariton is good.

I feel so bad for you. Id LOVE to be a Vet tech. What a great gig. I much prefer animals to most people, LOL...so being around animals sounds like a super job.

  10. I am allergic to the cannabis plant. I break out BAD if it touches me (may be te spines, but it seems way more then that to me). During trimming my eyes water, my face breaks out, and I sneeze uncontrollably. Very ironic

I developed bad allergies after getting my first short haired cat. The doctor said the short hairs shed more while the long hairs keep their hair longer and shed less. Does that make sense to you Ms Vet Tech? I wanna make sure they aren't hoodwinking me.

I take Claritin D a few days a week and it seems to be ok usually. The only time I still have issues is on high atmospheric pressure days- that combined with the allergies kills me.

I'm allergice to weeed to. I start sneezing like mad, but nothing major.

RG- that is very ironic. Maybe gloves and ski goggles?

Canna- since this thread is so old... how did this play out. Have you managed to get the allergies under control?

Hey I never saw your reply. I think I never saw most of anyone else's either, I left for a while.....so yeah I dunno what happened. I was having all kinds of reactions to things and they just stopped. I moved and it helped. I think it was something in the old apartment...mold..I dunno, something in the walls.

Anyways, yes. Shorthair cats shed a LOT more than longhair cats. Also have more dander, at least from what I have seen. I prefer longhair cats because of it. Actually, medium shed the least. Longhair types with double/triple coats shed a ton. Shorthairs shed a ton. Mediums shed the least and from what I see all the time, have the least dander. Another way to lessen the dander is to switch to wet-food (or raw food). I have done this for other reasons (it's just healthier) and I have seen a dramatic decrease in dander and shedding.

About the weed, talk to Skuzzi, if his doc appointment is succesful today maybe he can help!

Excuse me beeing dutch :) ,but you developed this allergie recently??

Did u go allerigic on other things in the past 2 years, if i may ask??

Did u have a sudden change in diet?? Stress??? Did u move (dumb question i know,,since u woulda crossed that poss yourself)

The thing is with histamines in such cases if i'm correct,,,,,,,,,,they let your body react worse on the cause every time it happenes.........

there are various theories on the internet on what caused the sudden allergy or what can prevent/cure it. I believe many can be true.

lemme get back,,,it way 2 late here in europe and i suffered severe smoking session haha

Do you mean me or Smokahontas? This thread is a couple years old. Whatever it was, went away, and rather abruptly. I switched a bunch of different chemicals I use (cleaners, shampoos, ect) though I never could figure out if one was the problem and also eventually moved to a house that is a lot newer and nicer than my old apartment. All is well with me now. Thanks :)
