my plants are about 3 weeks into vegging and i'm starting to see what appears to be preflowers. after looking at this pic from the FAQ ...the growth i'm seeing on my plants is in the same location as the calyx in that pic, but as each day goes by they look more and more like new growth because they seem to be putting out tiny leaf blades. also, they have yet to show any pistils. i have a feeling that they might be male preflowers because when you look at this pic from the FAQ ...you can see that the very immature male pods have a structure that looks a little bit like very immature new growth from the node because of the tiny "leaf blades" at the tip of each pod. so, is it possible that these preflowers on my plants are really just new branches appearing where preflowers usually do or will only preflowers grow right next to those little spike things at the node? if it's not new growth, is it most likely that they are male preflowers because of the "leafy" structure they display?
no smot, those are pics from the faq's not mellow's. Mellow i am not sure but seems a bit early to see any signs of sex. I think its just new growth. can you take some close ups?
no, my camera's "macro mode" sucks. it would be quite strange if they are new growth because i've never seen multiple branches grow from a single node. i guess i'll just have to be patient.
ah haha. my mistake. well i've had 4 week old seedlings develop preflowers (they were cindy99f2's) all that showed at week 4 were male. it took like 2 weeks after my initial discovery of preflower growth before i could positivly identify. so around week 6 i could tell for sure.

I had cut the branches at a node only to have three branches develop later. Two on one side on on the other. Also I broke a main stem in training, on a Mendocino ~ Love plant, and two branches developed below the break at a node one below the break that had been trimmed of branches before. These plants were kept branchless till 12 inches. Randy
Which strain mellow? Are all of them doing it? light scedule? I could be wrong....but it sounds like its branching out to me. Could they be auto-flowering?
i am having the same prob with my grow dood. mine is a femmed bean, dutch passion white widow, so i am heavily leaning towards it being new growth. i hope so any way. looks male to me. pissing me off on this end. I am on my way right now to take some pics of my problem. i'll be back with 'em in a bit.........
well today i examined them again. the things i was looking at are new branches, not preflowers. they're probably reacting to the stress induced by my pinching/twisting the main stem and trimming lower secondary growth before it develops any nodes. i learned something new today. however, some are showing preflowers as well. the scrawny C99 has a definite male pod coming in next to one of the new growth tips, so it's getting chopped...and then there were 5. i'm kind of glad considering it was the least desirable plant based on its structure. here's a pic: the other C99 will have to wait another day or two before i can make a positive id. luckily almost every plant is starting to show alternating nodes, so i will definitely be able to switch to 12/12 within the next 5 days or so. also, both fem'd WWs are showing preflowers that look distinctly female ... big surprise.
the top pic was a female and the bottm was a male plant and those r flowers and the pic above my post wtf it looks like it is dyeing buddy
Hey Mellow...are the Fem'd WW's the ones you obtained thru Jay...like I did...just curious...cuz' mine are doing really well too at 3 weeks in...PC
max, did you read any of my posts? professor, yeah these are dutch passion fem'd ww that i got from jay. in my first box i grew a fem'd ww that i got from marymary (also dutch passion), and these are growing just as compact and lush as that one did. the nodes are so tight that i'm pinching them only about half as often as i'm pinching the other strains. dutch passion knows how to breed! still nothing conclusive on the JHxBG or the other C99, but one of the WWs showed a pistil today! the other WW has identical calyxes that haven't shown any hairs, but i'm 99% certain she's a she as well. the skunk probably isn't going to show preflowers but there's very little chance that fem'd plant isn't a girl. all of the plants now have alternating nodes on at least one side branch -- even the C99 that is only 3 weeks old. i wasn't sure if any of them would reach maturity by the end of the 4th week, but i have been pleasantly surprised. i'll be switching to 12/12 on february 1 (day 28). i'm keeping my fingers crossed until then for at least one pistil to show on either of my unknowns so that i can move 4 girls into the big 4-gal buckets before they start to flower. talk about excitement!
I can sense the excitement way over here, Mellow... I am nearing my 4th week of veg...no alt. nodes yet to speak of...but overall they are all healthy as can be...stay tuned for pixs of this crop at the end of veg...and at harvest time...Herbster, has offered to help me get some pixs up online...anxious to share my progress wit' ya' all...PC
well i think it's bad news time. although the preflowers are very small and immature i'm fairly certain that both the JHxBG and the remaining C99 are males. i found a great description on overgrow: http://www.overgrow.com/growfaq/1678 just look at the last picture, which shows an immature female calyx (left) and an immature male pollen sac (right). on my plants i noticed the leaf-type structure and more rounded shape like the one in the picture, which leads me to believe they are both males. nevertheless, i'm going to transplant my 3 fem'd plants -- white widow (x2) and skunk -- into 4-gal square buckets tomorrow, and i'll do what i can to squeeze the JHxBG and C99 in the box still in their 8" round pots. i'd rather wait a week or two into 12/12 to be certain than throw them out now and later regret having trashed a girl. i think my next grow is going to be all fem'd seeds and hopefully some kali mist clones if any of my remaining KM beans turn out to be girls.
about the males dood. You are right about the close nodes on those Dutch Passion WW though. I am amazed. My femm WW are going great (except for one of 'em being male of course). I am gonna order another femm package b4 long. Not sure what strain though. Hope every thing continues in the right direction for ya. wa
