This last saturday night I get a call from brinks that my alarm at home went off. Something set one of the motion detectors in the house. I race home to find 5 cop cars in front of my house. some one broke a window in the back and climbed in. So as I go into the house the cop behind me proceeds to tell me that they've already been in the home. I'm kinda freakin out at this point, when we get to the side of the house where the grow is he says. "the only room we weren't able to check was the corner one because it was locked. I said sometjhing to the effect that I'm storing some shit in there for a friend so I keep it locked. He said alright and never brought it up again.

Thank god for carbon scrubbers and all the time I put into making that room as quiet as possible. they ended up stealing my wallet and my wifes purse and a bottle of apple puckers

2 weeks before that I caught some black dude in my backyard looking through the same window. Maybe it was him that came back with a friend.

Either way I need some fire power. I was thinking of a shotgun for the house and a handgun for myself with a concealed weapons permit. So give me some suggestions for some reliable firepower

    thanks

Browning 380 semi auto small easy to carry and shoots hollow points no recoil. 13 in the mag and one in the pipe. Not too small and not too large but if you see that fucker he better run like hell or your gonna get him with one of these!!! forgot to add I actually bought this one as a home defense gun for my wife on the advise from a gunsmith on a home defense gun that was small easy to shoot and had a lot of firepower 14 rounds. I was amazed how nice it was!

First, find and attend a gun safety course!!!

If there are any kids in the house, buy and use a trigger lock or gun box.

Teach the kids how to use the gun properly.

Keep it clean and fire it often.

That being said I like a .45 Smith and Wesson. The .45 is a big slow bullett.

No matter where you hit your target, it will fall down.

My second choice would be a 357. You can fire both the 357 round and the

.38 special out of the same gun. The .38 is good for pratice and the 357 has GREAT stopping power.

    Hope this helps.

I like the Smith & Wesson model 649. Compact snub revolver with a shrouded hammer. single or double action but won't snag if pulled from beneath clothing or a pocket and nothing is more reliable than a smith and wesson revolver. Shoots .38+p or .357 mag plenty of firepower in a nice pocket sized gun.

i like Winchester Shotguns. This 1 is perfect for home defense and is affordable too. SXP 12 gauge Defender.

    Wow man...

that's pretty intense. Strange that the room wasn't part of the equation at all. You are one lucky man.

I know you didn't ask but I'd recommend a dog. Way better deterrent for home invasion. They cost a lot more but studies show they increase your lifespan!

Permit's are cool but won't help if they ever do come for your grow. It will still be an extra felony charge for having guns and grows together.

Really sucks you're dealing with this at all, but Mad Props for the room being locked and stealthy. :icon_salut:

I like all the advice. Especially the "safety" course. That being said I own several guns and my favorite is very similar to the (hand gun) model rasganjah posted. although mine is slightly different in that it has the "Crimson Trace" or lazer sight built in to the grip. Very nice and super reliable weapon for home or self defense. And remember, the sound of a shotgun chambering a hot round or slug is a great detourant for any would be invader. But with that, keep in mind what is beyond the intended target. Stay safe and shoot safe.

That is why I would not have an alarm system on a house with a grow. The cops can and will enter and search every nook. I have gone threw houses with k-9's. They will find things no matter how big the scrubber.

My alarm goes to a local security company, they dispatch one of there armed units and page me. I then show up armed as well. I have never had a problem with this system.

I would forget the shotgun for the house to big for your wife to be swinging around in the hallways . I'd go with a compact pistol in .40sw caliber ether Glock model 27 in .40sw caliber or the Smith & Wesson MP compact in .40 caliber your wife will be able to handle both & both are good for conceal-Bud

P.S. Get a lock box that your finger prints open it.

id get a .45 or 9mm for personal defense and a shotgun for home defense.

    I like a nice .45 myself.

With that said, aint going to do you much good if they break in while you are not there, and it IS an extra charge, no matter the weapons intent, if you are growing weed. BE CAREFUL!

I say go for the dog defense system. Delivery people are nervous at my door, and my dogs are trained not to bite anything, all bark.

man thats really scary. defenitly a gun for protection but some good lights with motion detectors might be a good deterant. zCause really that was wayyyy to close. OMG Holy shit. You got nerves of steel guy!

Smarmy- I'd have been crapping hunks of concrete walking through with a cop at my elbow. Would have been a good test for Joe's "FreshBalls" antiperspirant.

I'm a fan of shotguns for home defense. Bullets can penetrate walls so my fear is a stray shot from a hand gun will hit somebody in another room.

With a short barrel 12 gauge loaded up with high brass #6 shot you have a weapon that will kill at up to 15 feet without precise aiming but not penetrate sheet rock. Past 15 or 20 feet you'll do hella damage just pointing and pulling the trigger out to about 40 feet. In a home you don't need range, you need ease of use and heavy damage without risking anybody else. Pace off your longest hallway, bet its not more than 40 feet.

Besides...I'm such a pussy I'd have a hard time doing anything other than point and pull the trigger before pissing my pants.

    cheers

do your research first and more import than anything, go to a few gun stores and hold some guns and find what is comfortable for you. as far as reliability goes or what id bet my life on, id buy a Sig or Glock.(no, im not a glockkid and i hate how they look, but they are proven) As far as sig goes, the fact the navy seals have used them since the 80's should say enough in itself. 2 rules to live by as a gun owner. 1. Never point at what you aren't willing to kill. i know that sounds harsh, but in a self defense situation everyone acts differently and you could pull your weapon, freeze and have it takin from you. 2. I expect this from all gun owners, but sadly i don't see it anymore. NEVER LET ANYONE HOLD YOUR GUN. even if its your best friend from first grade for the last 20 years loaded or not. if you cant follow by rule number 2, please don't buy a gun.

A while back I had a boss/employer who I was on really good terms with. Him and I went shooting in an indoor shooting range once a week for six months straight. I don't own a gun, he supplied the guns, ammo, membership etc. He just liked the company. I got my hands on several different models. He was big, 6'2" and 280 lbs or so. He liked to shoot a .45 but not me. They have lots of stopping power but I was more accurate with a 9mm or .38, less recoil. But that's me.

Shooting accurately is not as easy as they make it out to be in Hollywood. Trust me. It takes practice, lots of it, which is fun!

  15. big t double

big t double i finally changed this

i was gonna suggest what was already been said and i cant help a good gun discussion so......id go with what bud said, the glock(whatever model, id opt for the shortest one for concealed carry purposes) 40 cal......or the sig like teachmethewayy said, my sis has a sig and she loves it....also a 40 cal.

i own a .380 but i dont like it(i dont recommend buying a taurus, crap, i wish i woulda researched better)....gonna trade it off for a glock.....i also have a ruger p89 9mm.....i like the ruger, its a pretty reliable weapon as well (never jammed on me, hundreds of rounds, and bought used) and rugers are pretty inexpensive as well.....i also like the mossburg pistol grip 12 gage....but as someone said already, the shotty might not be ideal for the wife.......good luck sir.....your story sounds horrifying, i would have pooped my pants.

big t why dont you like the taurus? I used to love mine! That said I DO love a glock but never had the cash to buy one but have shot many.

Thats the model I used to have. PT 111 Pro. Granted their are more accurate weapons out their, but for home defence, if you cant stop someone with a Taurus, not to be rude, I dont think a glock is really going to change much. It all comes to practice, practice, practice. Guns are a real passion for me and as anyone who shoots handguns knows, your grip on your weapon is everything.

OI VEY!!! I totally would've crapped myself right then and there! MY GOD, get a dog or two! Def a deterrant to break ins!

The boyfriend has taken me shooting a few times so i could get more comfortable holding a gun, and as not to be afraid of them- as i had one pointed two inches from my face as a teenager and i fainted! Ever since that incident, and several bank robberies (i was an employee of the said robbed bank...), i had to become comfortable holding and firing a weapon. He likes shotguns, which i know nothing about, but i personally like a glock 9 or a 38 special, for me- maybe for your wife...

As already mentioned- educate yourself, go shooting and take your wife too- you both should have experience firing a weapon you will have in your home for self defense. And safety first!!! I would start with a doggy though...

Good Luck, and thank your lucky stars that wasn't a nosier cop!

    Peace

Black or white blue or green, A swinging dick "IN" your backyard is a problem.

growing is an issue and had the punks kicked in that locked door, you would have been popped for sure. Like assholes everbody has an opinion so here is ours.

fence your yard if it isnt already, get a LARGE dog, hell maybe two. and do away with the monitoring of the alarm system, hell maybe the system all together, noise, sirens, and monitoring companies draw LEO to you. Dogs barking spotlight bad guys and they tend to go to an easier target. If you have insurance let them kill the dogs break in and get what they will while you are not there, when you return, YOU have control of the situation and ANY cleanup needed before LEO gets there.

Then when LEO leaves you follow the american way and hang a huge dick in the insurance company for "your losses", pardon us - "your MANY losses":roffl:

I have to chime in on the glocks....I had the .40 cal glock and hated it for the simple reason that the recoil spring has a plastic core and breaks WAY too easily. The gun I owned was previously owned by a cop who got rid of it for the same reason. I myself prefer a good .357 revolver (you can use snake load if you're worried about bullets penetrating walls)....but that's just me. I like to know my gun isn't going to fuck up on me in a situation where I need it most.

That being said....I have to agree with Lion. A gun does you no good if you're not home to use it. I have 6 dogs and let me tell ya....they make everyone nervous who shows up here. I don't get snuck up on either....that's for damn sure! I know if someone is here well before they are close enough to cause me or my family harm.
