Sterile Hydroponics - Physan 20

A common problem in hydroponics is keeping the root zone healthy. Problems can arise for any number of reasons, pathogens, nutrient temp, fungal disease, lack of air/oxygen, and even pests. Hydroponic systems are not completely sterile environments, even when starting with sterile growing medium, and plants started in a sterile hydroponic system. Bacteria and fungi that are well adapted to living in water tends to be the cause of the most severe disease problems. Airborne spores can get into the growing media as well, and with the moisture, nutrients and roots to infect, they have what they need to spread. Chillers, larger air-pumps, H2O2, beneficial bacteria, root conditioners, etc are all helpful in keeping the root zone healthy, but aren't always 100% effective.

After several bouts with "Hydro Herpes" in my DWC tubs, even having optimum temps and big air-pumps, I decided to try something different. I started using a product called Physan 20 to create a more sterile hydro environment. Physan 20 is a broad range disinfectant, fungicide, virucide, and algaecide which effectively controls a wide variety of pathogens on hard surfaces and plants. People dismiss Physan as the "nuclear solution", because it pretty much kills any bacteria, good or bad. But I believe it does such a great job of maintaining a sterile nute solution, that the roots don't require the protection provided by beneficial bacteria. I just add in 1ml/10gal with every reservoir change and also when I top off the reservoir. I haven't had one bit of slime or any other root zone contamination since I started using it, without changing any other variables.

In varying concentrations, Physan 20 can be used for a wide variety of applications. In addition to preventative treatment, it can also be used in higher concentration to kill established infections, above or below the root zone. You can use it as a general disenfectant all around the house, even killing mold and other hard to kill bacterias. It comes very concentrated, as I only use 1 ml per 10 gallons of water for nute solutions and 1 tbsp/ gal for cleaning solutions. And at less than $10 per 16 oz, it is very cost effective as well. The one downside, is that it is toxic to fish, so you can't use it on or around aquariums, but other than that it's EPA approved and poses no human or environmental risk when it is used at recommended use levels.

I think the roots speak for themselves.

I've even converted the owner of my local hydro shop. He's started using it on everything he has growing in the store, and the results have been impressive.

Check it out for yourself, you won't regret it.

Not at all T6. Less than $10 for 16 oz. And at 1ml/10gal, it lasts a loooong time.

    i still use benificials

FOR THE INCREASE IN GROWTH AND REDUCTION IN NUTRIENTS USED

I STERILE MY HYDRO WITH IT THEN REINOCULATE THE ROOTS THE NEXT DAY AFTER H2O2. DISSAPATES:thumbs-up:

Oh my fucking word TC. I literally just spit beer and coughed bong smoke, and spilled the bong all over my pant leg when I saw "Hydro Herpes". That is fucking classic dude, takes the cake for all growing euphemisms IMO. :roffl:

H202, enzymes, benie bacts etc are all great root conditioners, root sterilizers or whatever. It's all about how you use them, and in what relation to other products.

I was one who considered Physan 20 'The Final Solution' but your results are compelling. In fact it's worth trying in my med pressure aero build coming up so thanks for the tip!

    Physan 20 dosage ?

    hey there,

i just registered here in this forum just to ask about your experience with Physan20.

I myself got a bottle of physan cause i got some serious root rot problems.

i started with an NFT table with pot filled with hydrocorrels on it.

The pot are standing on a very thin root mat out of really fine glasfibre.

every pot is feed by 3 drippers 5 min with 15 min break between.

temps are just fine from 17-20°C.

    Got AN ph perfect mirco/grow/bloom

    sensizym

    voodoo

    piranha

    candy

    bigbud

    overthrive

    and superthrive.

    system was sterilized before start.

all went well till the 3week.

i think i got root rot in the system cause on dripper was directly drippin on one rockwool cube.

well , thats the story , now im in the battle with the rot.

started to flush with Previcur N

then bleach at 5ppm for 12 hours.

after flush no more piranah voodoo or zyms, just straight

    H2O2 per 1,7ml/L.

things started already to get better , but i am far away from save.

so i read some good things about Physan20

    BUT ?

    other thread

Well thats pretty much the opposite was is suggested in this thread.

    Confused :bduh: :wtf?:

    So Carpenter, is it

    1ml /1 gallon

    1ml/10 gallons

you use to have your shine white roots.. ?

Hope for some help dudes..

You are mixing up nute solutions versus cleaning solutions.

From the quotes you mentioned it would be:

1ml /1 gallon = for cleaning systems or cleaning in general even in the house.

1ml/10 gallons = a nute additive as a preventive and other problems.

Other wise I have no info for you, but I think that is what he means. Other wise I am not sure what the hell we are talking about. :-welcome-:

    thx for the quick answer,

    but in the thread mentioned

they talk about killing the algae without harming the plants.

well, i use physan the safe way i guess and add it at 1ml/10 gallons for my weekly 24h flush with plain tab water.

i can't get rid of my root rot since its all over my plats an roots really look terrible.

sad, but in summer i can't go with hydro, as i ain't got a chiller.

gonna switch to coco mats for the warmer season.

    thx for reading,

    cheers,

have you tried adding h2o2 to your nutrients solution 2 x's a week?

  14. Chem*

    Chem* Germinating

yeah , since 2 weeks ill run the solution with h2o2

everyday top off with 1/4 the start amount

  15. nippie

    nippie preachin' and pimpin'

    obvis I can't read :roffl:

    what percentage h2o2?

roughly 7 mls per gal that should prob kill damn near anything with 29% h2o2

  16. Chem*

    Chem* Germinating

    it's the 35% h2o2 i am using at 1,7ml/l which is 6,5ml/gallon

what comes close to the 7ml of the 29% h2o2.

but i read a lot about h2o2 wont kill every shit, so lot of people use clorox in a 5ppm concentration.

well, those plant have to deal with a lot i guess, h2o2, bleach and physan20.

if this doesnt help , i quit hydro and stay with coco slabs.

but thats not what i want.

    so, thx for reading .

have a good day out there
