hello all, when i am reading the strain reports i see many references to this pheno or that pheno when discussing a certain strain. can someone please clarify what is meant this? i am new and like to absorbe as much knowledge a possible... thanks
It means phenotype. For instance some strains have different phenos within one strain. Say you grow some kind of kush. Call it Candy kush. Well out of one strain there will be different phenotypes. Some might be more sativa dominant...so those would be the "sativa like" pheno. One might smell like grape while another like cherry, so people will say "ohh I love that cherry pheno"...... So theoreticly out of a pack of ten of these "Candy Kush" seeds you may get some "indica dominant phenos", some "grape phenos" ect.....but they are all the same "strain" And you can look up phenotype for more scientific jargon :thumbs-up: ps your dog is cute as hell. I have a pitty myself. I love your's bat ears.
Same kinda thing as a man and woman having six kids. each kid will be very different, even tho they ALL get half their genes from mom and half from pop. Ive got four White Widows right now that dont even look like the same plant--two have fat wide leaves, two have skinny serrated leaves...all from the same pack of seeds. Go figure. Dixie
thanks cannagirl and dixie, u guys rock n roll lol. so basically if i grow say 5 seeds from the same strain i can end up with 5 different tasting and smelling buds as well as 5 different highs? so how do i know what that strain is supposed to be like if every plant can be different? not to mention consistancy of product? i guess i pick the pheno i like best and make sure i have cloned each one before i harvest them.and make that one my mother so all future harvests will be the one i like best? man i just want to get seeds in soil. lol i hate buying equipment on a budget.
This is what separates real breeders from pollen chuckers. A real breeder grows out thousands of plants and selects the best to continue breeding with. Once they have the strain stabilized there generally will only be a couple phenos. BTW, MrNice FTW :thumbs-up:
hey virago... im thinking of using mr nice black widow as my first strain and maybe a purple or a cheese or a blueberry or some kind of mix of those. i would like to grow 2 or 3 srains in my first grow. any suggestions on any of those. i want something super fruity and sweet smelling and tasting. and everyone swears by mr nice black widow so i have to try it. thanks for advice
Like virago420 said a reputable breeder has stable strains with limited phenotypes. if you start with good genetics like Mr. Nice you should see less variation from the pack of seeds. The differences between phenos should be fairly subtle. That's exactly how you do things. :good job:
Hey BB214, I know you are just starting out. I would recommend growing only one strain to start with. This is experience talking. Lets say you grow Bubblelicious and lets say Northern lights. The Bubblelicious like less ferts than the Northern lights. So if you feed the bubble the same as the NL than you may burn it with to much fertilizer. If you have multiple strains growing than the way you mix nutrients will have to be adjusted. If you decide to grow multiple strains than make sure you mark the containers for the strain you are watering as not to over feed them. Let me know if I can help in any other way.
ok mrgreenjeans i get where u are coming from and makes sense to me. my question is this: how do i know how much to feed any given strain? is there a reference to show what certain strains like or need to be feed compared to others? i dont mind labeling and keeping track of different dilutions as that falls into my need to be organized and detailed lol... im going to make the investment in excellent genetics as everyone seems to say mr nice is top shelf so i dont want to waste the genetics by over/under feeding... gosh i feel so clueless lol. and i will be using soil i believe if that matters
What ever you use for nutes, start out at half the recommended dosage and work you way up. If I find the tips of the leaves start to brown than I know to much ferts, so I cut back a little. I keep a few simple notes for the variety's I've grown just so I know the correct amount to feed when I start growing that variety again
thanks again mrgreenjeans. by the way they wee all out of mr nice black widow, and i couldnt afford the mango haze from them so... i noticed that attitude had a limted supply of reserva privada og kush. i couldnt resist lol. hope i made a decent choice on genetics. seems lots of good reviews and attitude customers voted it top strain of 2010, hey we shall see they werent cheap as 6 feminize seeds were 85.00 plus s+h and extra stealth measures. hopefully ill have my first seeds in the soil within a couple of weeks... fingers are crossed
Hello everyone. Thanks to Cannagirl and Dixie Hicky for the wonderful explanation about pheno. It really confuses me whenever I encounter certain unfamiliar words in the forum. I am glad that there are a lot great people here who share a lot of knowledge. Thanks to Bigbud214 as well for starting this thread
