On this day in history, February 26, 1917, the instrumental ensemble Original Dixieland Jass Band recorded the very first usable jazz recordings in a Victor studio in New York City. This was one of the early starts of the Jazz age, ushered into the US in the early 20th century, and paved the way for blues and later rock and roll.
