I want to air cool my glass enclosed 1000w hps I plan on pulling cool air from the room next door and then exhaust to the attic.Do i need one fan in the intake and one in the exhaust. or just the exhaust pulling everything? what size fan should i get and can anyone recommend a quiet brand?

well theres two main types of fans. Inline fans are the round ones, with vent holes on either end. They work good for exhausting things. The other type of fan is a squirrel cage fan. They are good for blowing air into things. You can set either one up to do the other thing, like the squirrel cage to exhaust, or the inline to blow into somewhere, but they are most effecient the other way around. If i were you i'd get an inline fan, of the 6" or 8" size. I don't know enough about different brands to say whats quieter than the other though

so i dont need 2 fans to air cool hood just a good inline on the exhaust end. My hood openings are 4" would 4" be too small of a fan or do i have to use duct reducers

a 4" fan would probably work. But 1000 watts is alot of heat, and the more air flow the better. which is why i suggested a 6" fan or bigger. If its just for air cooling the light, a 4" should work. If its for the whole room, go bigger

CanFan and Elicent inline fans are very quiet when insulated ducting is attached to both ends. The elicent is quieter than the canfan, also the elicent is a bit more pricey. Also Vortex makes a pretty good quiet 6 in inline fan that moves a lot of air for its size.

If your going to cool only one 1000 watter that would be plenty but if you are running more lights you will need a more cfm's

I ran a 309cfm inline elicent and was very happy with it. GT420 turned me on to that brand as it's reputed to be one of the quietest fans on the market. The ONLY sound I could hear was the moving air.

It's for whatever you want it to be used for. If you're just cooling the light I'd say a 250cfm would be fine...maybe even a smaller fan would do the trick. You wouldn't be trying to circulate the entire grow area. That one 309cfm I ran pulled air thru the veg chamber and flowering chamber both.

Here's a better picture of my actual grow when all was said and done so you get an idea of how things worked...one fan for 2 chambers. Fan is behind the upper right panel.

Thanks herbsparky. I really like the way you lined up all those cfl bulbs in the pix. I'm in the process of building a mother / clone cabinet and i think that way would work perfect. Is that something you had to wire yourself. if so are there any threads here how to do so or is it really simple.Let me know. PEACE

you should get a 8" inline centerfrugial exhaust fan...i have a 1000 watt under a glass hood right now..my 8" fan works great makes it so ur hand can easily touch the glass..have it sukin the air out of the room and this will cause the room to naturally replace the air that is leaving with new air

Purps, are you using the it to exhaust the whole room and the light.I plan on pulling air from another room , through the light and up in the attic . completely sealed because i use co2 and central air. Is this what you are talking about? PEACE

you can do it that way if you are running c02 and central air...i have my fan suk the air out of the grow room threw the light and out of the room then i have new air coming in through fans from another room and holes drilled in my door with layers of screen over them sukin in air from outside as the air leaves through my fan...but a 8" is what u need either way

8" would be a bit overkill to just cool the hood if you ask me. If I recall correctly most hoods will have 4" adapters for cooling. My point is you are not having to move large volumes of air if you just want to cool the hood. You simply need to keep cool air flowing thru the hood.

Swarmy...are you planning on a seperate fan to exchange air in the grow?

well i'm using a co2 injection system and the room has central air which keeps it at 75*.So i dont really think i need to exhaust the room. but i',m no expert any comments on that are appreciated.
