Gingrich Describes Palestinian People as 'Invented'

Newt Gingrich declared in an interview that Palestinians are an "invented" people, a statement that drew outrage Saturday from top Palestinian officials.

Gingrich's campaign, while standing by the statement, afterward clarified that the former House speaker still supports the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Dec. 7, 2011: Republican presidential candidate, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich addresses the 2012 Republican Presidential Candidates Forum hosted by the Republican Jewish Coalition in Washington.

Gingrich Prepares for First Debate as GOP Front-Runner

The front-running Republican presidential candidate made the comments in an interview with The Jewish Channel. The interview marks some of the toughest language to date any candidate has used to describe the Middle East peace process. It also comes after Gingrich pledged at a forum earlier in the week that if elected, he would name John Bolton -- a hawkish, pro-Israel former U.N. ambassador who served in the George W. Bush administration -- as his secretary of state.

In the interview with The Jewish Channel, Gingrich likened himself to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom he praised for his "tough-minded realism" about Israel's security.

He said the Jewish people have the right to a state, but stopped short of declaring the same for the Palestinians.

"Remember there was no Palestine as a state. It was part of the Ottoman Empire. And I think that we've had an invented Palestinian people, who are in fact Arabs, and were historically part of the Arab community," Gingrich said. "And they had a chance to go many places. And for a variety of political reasons we have sustained this war against Israel now since the 1940's, and I think it's tragic."

Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond said afterward that the candidate was merely referring to the "decades-long history that has surrounded this issue," and has long supported the concept of Palestinian statehood.

"Gingrich supports a negotiated peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, which will necessarily include agreement between Israel and the Palestinians over the borders of a Palestinian state," Hammond said in a statement. "However, to understand what is being proposed and negotiated you have to understand decades of complex history -- which is exactly what Gingrich was referencing during the recent interview with Jewish TV. "

During the interview, Gingrich also said it's "delusional to call it a peace process," claiming that the Fatah-run Palestinian Authority and Hamas alike "represent an enormous desire to destroy Israel."

The Palestinian Authority generally is viewed in the West as a far more moderate influence in the region than Hamas. While the U.S. considers Hamas a terror group, it has tried to bring Palestinian Authority officials to the table with Israel.

Obama administration officials, notably Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, recently have put added pressure on the Israelis to help restart peace talks. President Obama, like his Republican predecessor, has pushed for a two-state solution -- though the Obama administration has fought efforts at the United Nations to recognize a Palestinian state absent an agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians themselves.

Gingrich's comments come as the Republican presidential candidates compete to exhibit their pro-Israel credentials. While Gingrich's campaign later affirmed support for a Palestinian state, his comments on the Palestinian people drew fierce condemnation from abroad.

The Palestinian prime minister, Salam Fayyad, demanded Gingrich "review history."

"From the beginning, our people have been determined to stay on their land," Fayyad said in comments carried by the Palestinian news agency Wafa. "This, certainly, is denying historical truths."

Palestinian lawmaker Hanan Ashrawi said Gingrich had "lost touch with reality."

Palestinians never had their own state -- they were ruled by the Ottoman Empire for hundreds of years, like most of the Arab world. When the Ottoman Empire collapsed in the aftermath of World War I, the British, then a global colonial power, took control of the area, then known as British Mandate Palestine.

During that time, Jews, Muslims and Christians living on the land were identified as "Palestinian."

But modern-day Palestinians bristle at the implication that they were generic Arabs. Palestinians are culturally Arabs -- they speak Arabic and their culture is broadly shared by other Arabs who live in the eastern Mediterranean. But they, for the most part, identify themselves as Palestinians, just as the Lebanese, Jordanians and Syrians also identify themselves with a specific national identity.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Also, would this end Canadians or Mexicans as well as they were once colonies?

I would say there are most certainly Palestinians

They have lived there for thousands of years.

Just because they were ruled by someone else that doesn't lessen their claim. The Palestinians are a group of tribes that rebeled against the Ottoman Empire and lost but still stayed together as a pack.

They were there during the crusades and long before that. There are references to them in biblical times and before that.

They are no refreneces to Jews however until the bible. A book written by them. To take that as a historical doc with nothing else would be reading a gov. pamphlet on Marijuana and taking that as fact.

To say they have no claim to their ancest. homeland is fucking insane. That would be like taking the remaining indians and telling them, well according to the constitution, you not listed as being the legal owners and you have no rights at all because of that. Sorry but you don't exist....I know, I know you were here when we got here, but you weren't unified country that established ties to Western Europe, so you're screwed.

And futhermore, if you look at the mandate establishing Israel, they are in direct violation from the mandate and have been since day1. If someone came and took your house, your land, and you recieved nothing in return...you;d be pretty pissed off also. Why the fuck should they pay the price because of Nazi Germany?

It's time that we stopped fighting other people's wars. We are in two now because of Israel....and what the fuck have they ever done for us?? They don't even have oil.

All that aside.....Newt stating these people are invented is nothing but inflamatory on his behalf. If you had a dispute with a neighbor, took it to court, then was told by the judge you are a piece of worthless shit that invented a story, do you think you would get a fair shake?

We are fighting wars with people who hate us because they think we all have this opinion (that they are worthless). Why give them more proproganda to use?

    West Bank mosque attacked

    (AFP) – 3 hours ago

JERUSALEM — Extremist vandals on Thursday torched another mosque in the latest "price tag" reprisal attack as Israeli troops demolished part of an illegal settlement outpost in the northern West Bank.

It was the second time in as many days that vandals had tried to burn down a mosque and left Hebrew-language graffiti at the scene in a protest linked to state plans to dismantle a handful of wildcat settler outposts.

The attacks sparked an angry Palestinian response, with officials accusing the Israeli government of providing "impunity" to the extremists.

"Setting fire to the mosque is a declaration of war by the settlers against Palestinians," presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina told AFP.

And the Palestinian Authority said Israeli forces had done nothing "to prevent or punish the rising trend of settler violence".

"This policy encourages settler hate crimes against Palestinians and their places of worship," it said. "Such incidents have continued unabated while Israeli policies are providing impunity to those extremists."

Thursday's arson attempt targeted a mosque in Burqa village near Ramallah.

"Carpets and chairs in the women's section were partly burnt and on the wall was Hebrew graffiti saying 'The war has started'," said Mayor Abdelkader Abdeljalil.

They also wrote "Mitzpe Yitzhar" on the walls, the name of the outpost which was partially dismantled by troops overnight, angering the settler community.

The attack took place 24 hours after extremists tried to set light to a disused mosque in central Jerusalem, daubing racist anti-Arab graffiti on its walls in a move which drew sharp condemnation from Washington.

Despite a flurry of attacks on mosques and other Palestinian property in the past few days, debate in Israel has been focused squarely on an incident earlier this week when settlers attacked troops in the northern West Bank.

The move angered Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who on Wednesday announced new measures against Jewish "rioters" who attack the security forces.

Under the new regulations, the army as well as the police will now have the authority to detain offenders, and they will be tried in military courts rather than in civilian courts.

The security forces will also be able to put offenders in administrative detention, in which a person can be held without charge for an unspecified length of time, and there will be an increase in orders barring individuals from areas of the West Bank.

"Those who raise a hand against Israeli soldiers or police will be punished severely," Netanyahu said, but stopped short of adopting a ministerial recommendation to classify them as "terrorists."

The attack on Burqa coincided with an Israeli army operation to dismantle two structures in the Mitzpe Yitzhar settler outpost near Nablus.

Troops demolished a house and a goat shed, which were built on private Palestinian land, to comply with a Supreme Court order to remove them by the end of the year.

Settler activists had hoped to prevent the operation but appeared to be taken by surprise, with troops reportedly entering the area via a Palestinian village, then declaring the outpost a closed military zone.

Police said there were no reports of any disturbances.

Avraham Binyamin, a spokesman for the community, told AFP that the residents' response to the demolitions would be further construction.

"We are not involved in acts of violence against the army," he said. "We are going to build, that is the answer of the Jewish settlement movement."

Israel considers settlement outposts built without government approval to be illegal and often sends security personnel to demolish them. They usually consist of little more than a few trailers.

But the international community considers all settlements built in the West Bank, including east Jerusalem, to be illegal.

Mark Twain..... renowned shaker and mover of how the era got it's opinion on world politics and geography. A notch below or above Horris Greely. Wow. What about the Saracin's? I might be spelling it wrong, but the ones that lived in the area for thousands of years even before the 1st Crusade, the ones that were fighting against the Christians for control of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. They would be present day Palistinians; descendents of a mixture of Egyptinan, Cannanite, Hebrew, Hittite(Turkish), Assyrian, and Babylonian ancestry. A rich and complex cultural history such as the Palistinians cannot be denied. Even the Romans treated Palistinians and Hebrews differently when they entered the region.

I don't think you CAN get the money out of politics because that's just where the money IS. The power is in politics and so therefore the money is in politics. To find someone who works solely for a cause other than lining their own pockets is to have a political candidate who isn't human, because all people want to 'better' themselves and it is in human nature to associate power/wealth with 'betterness'... to be the ALPHA as it were.

Not all people are like this, but most are rather they realize it or not.
