I've got a question on some clones I have. I've read where people have done 12/12 right from the start with clones, is that the better way to go, or should I veg em? Right now they're rooted for about 1-1/2 weeks. I have them in makeshift hempy pots made from solo cups and hydroton. I watered using useless week 1 veg this morning, this is the first nutes they've had. Has anyone done 12/12 from root, and should I stay hempy? I have some WM pots that are prefab hempy style. I haven't gotten the hang of the dwc I tried so I think hempy is my best bet. Appreciate any info on the subject. /monthly_2013_04/image.jpg.4f6cb4a11ec9a52b5864f3af50bc20a4.jpg
12/12 from start will work, but if you want a decent yield put them in larger pots, top them and veg a couple weeks so the root mass can develop.
Thanks man, I've got I believe one and a half gallon pots I got from Walmart that arepremade hempys. I'm hoping that'll be enough, probably need to get bigger ones though, appreciate it.
How big is your space for flowering and how big is your light? Those two things will be the determining factor on how big they can get. If you have the room and the light, I would veg them for a while longer. Like jr215 said, if the root mass is allowed to grow to a larger size they can uptake more nutrients as well as allowing the plant time to develop more bud sites. Top them a time or two as well IMO.
I'm always torn when it comes to topping. I sure do like a nice big top bud, but it makes sense for limited space. How many nodes should I let it go before topping?
Well you can just pack em in tight and not top them, of course. It's one approach to maximizing yield and I've seen some amazing applications. As far as when to top them, that depends. You could when they only have like 6 nodes (I wouldn't that early but it works for small veg spaces) but it kinda depends on how much space you have to fill. Also remember that plants don't generally grow much wider than their root masses. That's not an absolute rule but it's a good rule of thumb.
I disagree on how wide a plant will grow. I'v had many plants in fact most of my plants that get at least 50% wider than the root mass when grown in pots. I like to top early and allow the new tops to grow a few nodes before I flower them. I top as soon as they have 4 nodes or so and if I top again I'll wait for another 3 nodes to develop then top again. You could always forget topping and do some LST instead. You still increase the bud sites without affecting the main top of the plant. I like to combine the 2 sometimes, do some LST and top the tops as well as some of the side branches. It all depends on your light and space as to what will work best to maximize your yields for your setup.
Hey thanks ras and stynkalot. I grabbed up a bag of perlite earlier from HD so I may go ahead and transplant them into the hempy's once I get my cab finished. I think I'm gonna try a top and some LST. Thanks again
Well don't get me to lyin. From what I've read it's bending and tying the main stem so the side branches grow up. In either the beginners lounge or the FAQ's is a thread on how to LST and a lot of things. Oh ya, LST means low stress. Training I think.
Correct. Also tying any larger side branches to basically get a wide bushy plant with more bud sites. Can be done with or without topping. asssit:
Ohhh...now i know. I been reading the FAQ's and many other things here it's almost overwhelming the amount of knowledge and know how it requires to do this proper.
I know what you mean. Each time I log in I find something new I didn't know about. Everyone here has been very helpful and patient though, even when I ask stupid things.
Cannabis is easy when you break it down. Enough light, enough air, good nutrients and you'll get good results. Skimp in any one area and yield quality/amount suffers. From there it's all a balance of the three against garden constraints. All the other shit'll make more sense as you experience more about the plant.
:not-worthy::flipando: now that's badass. Did you top it as well, I'd like to have one look like that once I finish my cab. Total height in the large chamber is like 29" I think. How tall was that at finish?
Hehe, thanks. I did not top, only tied. This particular phenotype is known for being "branchy," so having that many colas is not normal, but Im still a big fan of LST. I think it was a foot, maybe a foot and a half at finish, but I dont' remember. Here is the link to the grow. In this thread, I went into a lot of detail on how I grow, and my setup. http://forum.growkind.com/showthread.php?t=40564
Here's another example of what LST and Topping can do. This was my very first indoor grow. DJ Short's Blueberry is the strain. 5 Gal. Hempy 100% Perlite General Hydroponics Flora Nova nutes. Vegged for 4 weeks under 1k watt HPS with a combo of both LST and Topping. Flowered under 1k watt HPS. Yielded 4 oz of cured buds.
Looks tasty! In the cab I'm building what I'll use as the flower chamber is around 27x29x18. I'm hopin I can keep them short like alien bait's. I'll be using a 150 watt hps, so I will probably put some cfl's for added light to stop any stretching.
