That's what bothers me. I'm very cautious re: giving advise because I don't know everything, just what works for me, and don't want to risk misinforming someone. I will say this: although thick-headed, the kid does have thick skin! Now, when I need a laugh, I think of ALL those cfl's! And black lights?!!!
Why do you insist on mounting all the lights in stationary positions? Even with a HPS light you should mount it in a way that allows you to adjust the height. That looks like it has a parabolic reflector that isn't closed and is laying flat against the ceiling. Is that the case? If so why are you not utilizing the reflector correctly? or just remove it and go with a plain vertical bulb and socket? But put it on a chain so you can adjust it! Take a look around at some other vertical bulb grows and see how to properly set it up. Regardless of potency your buds wouldn't measure up to those grown using proper techniques. You could have doubled what you yielded if you just use the proper technique and equipment. I set up my first 1k watt grow for right around $400 total! That included a used 1k watt HPS light, a 435 CFM fan, ducting, some wood and Panda Film and a couple clones and soil etc. All for around $400 and my first yield was 3/4 lb. of stick y buds worth well over $2000! That's like a 300% return in my investment! You are not gonna do that with CFLs. As far as getting people interested in the "hobby" I could care less as could many growers. If you like to grow things then good, I salute you and would be more than happy to try and help you learn, but if you aren't then you aren't. I doubt that most MJ smokers are out there going, "gee I would grow if it didn't take a million dollars". People who want to grow do the research and go about it in the right way or else they eventually fail and give up. This hobby requires a certain level of commitment (not just in willingness to learn, but in willingness to purchase the right tools to do the job) in order to be successful at it. You have the willingness to try, but your stubborn insistence that your way is viable and comparable to the correct way is showing me that you lack the willingness to learn. If you want to continue to do things the wrong way, be our guest, but do it elsewhere. Don't come to GK and report "your" incorrect information as facts. Other newbie growers that ARE willing to put aside their hard headed pride and all the crazy ideas they have about growing will be coming to GK in the future looking for advice and I don't want them stumbling onto this thread and jumping the gun and saying "see look this guy does it like that, I'm gonna do that too." And then GK gets a name for giving bad advice to newbies. GK is a place to learn. It's full of knowledgeable growers with tried and true advice. You can learn a lot here, if you would just stop..... and listen, instead of continuing to try and tell everyone how much you know.

Once at a party(many moons ago) some of my buddies were doing the old lighter to the butt then fart trick. It ended in a horrible accident, but thats not the point. The point is, that when the flame burst from my friends anus it was close enough to his little plant that it suddenly produced 4lbs of weed. All from that little burst of light....amazing! But true. i gotta agree- at least in most spots Well hey... i gotta agree with that if a person is sure he/she wants to "goat head" and do it, then sure the best is the only thing to have. efficient and long life as possible. But if it's a choice between a half pound of sticky bud and nothing, welll, i'll take the bud. Largely an experiment in how to heat the house too. But please note that I was making the light deal while several of the preceding posts were being written. It was funny to hear all the assuming. I really don't mean to say I know this and that. That's why i put the charts up there, mostly. I have a degree in history, about half of an M Arch, and almost all of a BS in structural eng. Sort of Indiana Jones degree's pretty sister (Art History) I have some 8 fulltime years of college- The charts are from the UO Architecture text. John Reynolds is a very nice guy, and Michael wrote Earthship 1, 2, and 3- very definitive sustainability/scrounge building texts. Other than that I'm too mono-informed because all i do is what Marijuana Horticulture (Cervantes) and miracle gro say hahaha. But point is that I think i mostly put forward referenced material. More a librarian than anything. Why doesn't the math work, I ask? I like the LED flashlight idea. Beat you to that one too- i just put in an inquiry about some (as much as) 300 watt LED's that should put the bump back in the color graph in the blue range that daylight has. They make led grolamps already, but they're fiendishly expnsive. That's what i was thinking about the blacklights... balance all the red power of the HPS. And sure they make CO2 generators especially for growth chambers... they say it really helps. But not if exposed to atmospheric. Oh geez now i didn't mount the light right? How could i NOT, in that room? Granted i ran out of mylar and used tinfoil on the rest (argh shoulda painted it flat white space blankets forthcoming), I mounted the reflector flat (not quite) on purpose... I figured I didn't really want to focus the light because I figure that the room will bounce it well enough that it doesn't want to be focused downward. Sure I've heard of the inverse square law and it's application to light distance... but those 18 gal totes are HEAVY. Never mind the 45 gal tote that Sweetie bought lol. Oh I have a lot of room though- I really don't care about space, for now. But with six plants I can throw a canopy across an 11 x 11 room that you can't walk thru, NP. But I like to PLAY with them! Lemme scrounge 3 more permits and we'll start worrying about space. Oh the math comes out to- 42 CFL's 23W each output 1600 lumens equals 966 watts outputting 67200 lumens (a bit more than 2 ea 400W halides at 30000 lumen each- to get 67200 you'd have to have 896W of halide). And one 1kW HPS outputting 130k lumens, for a grand total of 197200 lumens. Formerly there was 67200 of CFL and 30000 lumen of incandescent drawing (rated) 2466W. More than doubled the total light for considerably less power. Still far less than perfect, but... Nah I've hung around a lot of pot clinics, gathering signatures, etc- i testified before one state senate subcomittee on same. A LOT of patients say they don't have the money or space or whatever to grow their own. I think a $50 kit with 18 CFL's, a $3.50 timer, a teeny grow book, and some seeds would be a great idea for a pot clinic and put ten bucks each toward The Cause. And then grow them outside in the spring if nothing else. And what about the guy i got the HPS from? He got ripped off and hung it up. I've been geez, harassed, targeted by both sides of the law, villified, ripped off, set up, took down, threatened (repeatedly by both sides of the law), scammed on and murdered (would have murdered most people anyway) over the stuff. I've been close to tired of it at times, trust me. Point is that it's a lot easier to hang up a bunch of light bulbs that you can screw into the house than it is to abandon a grand or so in HID lights. Besides I stole the CFL's from work hahahahaha (Don't worry ha I'm self employed haha). Oh yeah- a lot of it is genetic. That Light of Jah stuff has THC ratings of up to 22%- please note i guessed 15% about mine. You can screw it up quite badly and still have some pretty good weed. Weed is like pizza and sex- when it good, it's GREAT. and when it's bad, it's still pretty good. And then there's "You can raise Great Danes, and you can raise Chihuahuas, and you know what? dudes, really....Yes, it IS true... i kinda sorta took pix. Please see previous. I know people (Rick Bayer, Voterpower, for example) who grow such things they call "five pounders". A half pound is hardly impossible, in that light. I've grown three pounders before but only outdoors. Besides the lights, the rooms are lined in mostly mylar with Tyvek housewrap on the floor. I shoulda painted them white. Individually thermostatted ($20 twin wndow) fans draw high elevation air and eject it into the livingroom. Return air thru the bath wall and stock furnace venting. The house furnace is set on vent and thermostats are wired into the rooms to kick the backup vent on at 90 degrees- the primaries are set at 75. Dehimidifier in the livingroom takes approx 2gal of water out of the air per night. Plants sleep in the daytime to optimize heat distribution. That particular plant is Light of Jah, from amsterdam seed bank, feminized. Miracle gro soil according to instructions, with bloom builder later. Sweetie was 7' tall including pot, pinched back at eary growth to form dozens of branches- of course this dropped the bud size. Prolly 4' wide. Took about 4 mo. I get a buzz off one hit at any stage of stoned-ness guaranteed. Please see attached... if that ain't pretty good pot anyway, ill eat it. I might eat it anyway hahahaha or make a drink out of it perhaps. See how even the stems on that stuff glisten? THAT's what kinda plant haha. Yup murdered alrightnah i got ambushed by two tweekers and knifed in the heart... only one in a thousand would have survived... "i got murdered", yes- i just barely weaseled out of it like always hahahaha Got over open heart surgery and abdominal, trauma thank you, in 2 mo (light duty). was out of the hospital in 5 days. used two bottles of oxycodone and something that has no medicinal purpose, period. Also tried to refuse a transfusion, but, well.... I wrote a minor draft screenplay but i don't think it will fit as an attachment. Damn the fancy lights, man, what do we do about security? A nice spectral curve isn't much good to a dead person. The fam bought me a SMLE training rifle with a bayonet... (I washed out of the SOF pugil stick championships on ESPN in Vegas the same year i tore my shoulder out doing pushups in OCS... still shot the nat hipower championships though for Roseburg...).
