Tony Aroma Let's Go - Two Smokes!

    Thanks Sir.

What you suggest is exactly what I've been doing. This is my 7th grow in this cabinet, which I built when I moved into my new house a few years back. But I've been growing on and off since the early 80s, so I do have a bit of experience under my belt.

Each grow I've improved something. I've resolved a ventilation problem that was making my temps too high. I switched from chemical to organic ferts. I started buying seeds rather than using unknown bagseed. And the last problem I finally fixed was switching from my old aquarium MH lights to HPS. Other than stupid things, like reusing soil and not having my exhaust fan turned on this grow, there's not really anything else I can think of to fix. At least not within the constraints within which I have to work.

Basically what I'm saying is that I think the only thing left for me to do is to get through a grow without doing anything stupid. Yeah, right!

Looks pretty frosty to me. I can't remember if you vegged these as long as your other one. I was going to try and suggest something but I just got lost...........

    sorry.

    Thanks.

This grow I vegged for 43 days, which is longer than usual. That's because they just did not want to grow. They were barely up to the height of the screen after 6 weeks. So, all things being equal, smaller plants means smaller yield.

My last grow vegged for 31 days, and they got probably twice as big as this time. Typically 4-5 weeks gives me a nice, even canopy at the right height for my (fixed height) screen.

    Update @ Day 54 of 12/12

It's official -- we've now moved into super slo-mo time. I really hate the last couple of weeks. They seem to take FOREVER. I just wish they'd finish already.

But I checked trichomes today for the first time, and they are definitely not ready just yet. The Sadhu and God Bud look to be the furthest along, with a fair amount of cloudiness. The LA Woman and LA Goddess on the other hand are still mostly clear. Which is consistent with my past experience. In the past I've harvested God Bud and Sadhu closer to 9 weeks, and LA Woman closer to 10 weeks. This time, because I only have the time to devote to a harvest a couple of days a week, they'll probably all go to around 9.5 - 10 weeks before I'm able to chop them. Better a little late than a little early. And since they are still filling in, I'm in no particular hurry.

Here's the smaller of the LA Woman twin's main cola. These two are the least frosty and the least finished. But they are definitely the hairiest of the bunch.

Next is the LA Goddess. It takes after its mother (LA Woman), mostly. It's definitely more similar than to its God Bud dad. It is however a bit frostier than mom.

Here's the Sadhu. It is, as always, one nice-looking girl. It may not yield a lot, but I know I won't be disappointed in its quality.

And finally, God Bud 2, the older, less branchy of the two. Both of these girls are the Frosty Mc Fostertons of the group. And their darker color is also obvious in this photo. I'm just about to run out of the God Bud from my last grow, so I'm really looking forward to harvesting these. I do loves me some God Bud.

    Harvest!

The results are in, and they are about what I expected. I chopped them all at day 64. All were mostly cloudy, just starting to show some amber. I probably could have waited a little longer, but I had the time so I chopped. Here are the recently deceased:

First, the Sadhu, weighing in at 88.5 g. It's not big, but it does have some pretty dense buds.

Next are the LA Woman twins. Remember, these both came from one seed. The larger one on the left was 63 g, and the runt was 38.5 g. Notice the very branchy larger one has virtually no lower popcorn buds. Of course even the "big" buds on this one are pretty popcorn-ish.

The LA Goddess is the one bright spot in this otherwise underwhelming harvest. It is the heaviest of the group at 161 g. If this turns out to be a decent smoke, I've got about 10-12 more seeds. And since the father was a hermie, they should all be females.

Finally, the God Bud. The one on the left is from an original seed, and the one on the right from an F2 I made. Also remember, the one on the right was 10 days behind. Ironically, the younger one was a better yielder. It ended up at 89 g, while the older one on the left was 68 g.

And now it's prediction time. Based on my top-secret, time-tested formula, I will come uncannily close to guessing the final dried weights.

    Sadhu - 15 g

    God Bud 2 - 11.5 g

    God Bud 6 - 14.5 g

    LA Woman 1 - 10.8 g

    LA Woman 2 - 6.5 g

    LA Goddess - 27 g

So I should end up with around 3 oz. Although I've had worse yields, this is still pretty disappointing. I may need to turn to drugs to escape this unpleasant reality. Just so happens, I know right where to turn.

Please stay tuned for my cure and smoke report.

The yield might not be any record breakers, but still some good looking buds.

    Harvest +6 Days

This is the 6th day after harvest, and they are drying slowly but surely (VERY humid around here). Interestingly, each strain is drying at a different rate:

God Bud -- both at 39% harvest weight

LA Woman -- both at 50%

    Sadhu -- 42%

    LA Goddess -- 28%

So what does that mean? The LA Goddess is drying fastest and the LA Woman is drying slowest. Does slower drying mean denser buds? Or thicker stalks? (These are trimmed, whole plants.) Or nothing at all?

Also of interest, the LA Goddess is a bit of a surprise in that it's at 28% of its harvest weight already, and that's usually about when they're ready to start curing. But it's definitely no more ready than any of the others. I generally start curing when the smallest stems just start to snap when bent. But at this point in time, all are still very flexible. So why has the LA Goddess lost so much weight? Could I have weighed incorrectly at harvest? Guess I'll never know. And I'll just have to go by the snap test.

Tony Aroma Let's Go - Two Smokes!

    Curing Begins

It's taken a while (i.e. forever), but it's finally time for curing. Yesterday I cut the buds off the stems (two days earlier for LA Goddess), and put the buds in large ziplock bags for curing. If anybody wants to know why I use ziplock bags instead of the traditional glass jars for curing, here's an explanation. After about 3-4 weeks, I'll put everything into jars for permanent storage. Then, and only then, will I do a smoke report.

Although I have to admit I have tried a couple of samples, from the LA Goddess and God Bud. I tried a few tiny popcorn buds from each (more like un-popped popcorn), and I do believe both are going to be GREAT!

And now for the final weight results:

    Sadhu — 17.5 g

    God Bud 2 — 14.4 g

    God Bud 6 — 17.8 g (God Bud total — 32.3 g)

    LA Goddess — 21.5 g

    LA Woman 1 — 11.2 g

    LA Woman 2 — 7.3 g (LA Woman total — 18.5 g)

    That's a grand total of 89.7 g or 3.2 oz.
Not a bad amount, for my needs. But for six plants. Kind of sucky.

Scroll up a few posts to see how scarily accurate my final weight predictions turned out to be. Yes, I'm just that good! (At predicting, not growing.)

Yes, they were trained. I do the SCROG thing, but this time they were so small that it really didn't make much of a difference. The larger LA Woman (and a few that turned out male) was topped, probably too close to 12/12.

And yes, this yield will easily hold me till next harvest. I could probably grow only once a year if I yield 3-4 oz at a time, but I really like to be growing. Always feel a bit of a let down after harvest time.

And if you're interested in God Bud, I've written two smoke reports on it from previous grows. No reason to think this batch will be any different. The reports are here and here.

Update-wise, humidity is a killer when it's time to dry and cure. Two weeks hang drying and about 2 weeks of curing, and they are still a bit wet. Not WET-wet, definitely smokable, but they could stand to lose just a bit more moisture. Which they refuse to do. And they are definitely curing, as the flavor is coming out quite nicely in all that I've sampled. So a little while longer yet before this grow is officially done.

I had a Senior Moment there....now I recall the reason I started thinking I might want to try the GodBud WAS reading your smoke report, LOL. Plus, it came from bcseedking...right? I ve been happy with their Juicy Fruit and Kush and White Widow. They were the first seed place I ordered seeds from and their WW was my first grow.

I have a similar problem with humidity. Not bad yet...but by July....jeeeez.

One trick I find that works when you just cant get em dry is, pile up the buds on a plate and stick em in the fridge overnight. It's dark, cool and DRY in there.... I find one or two days in the fridge before going into the curing jats takes that last little bit of dampness out.

Sounds like you're like me...GROWING is more important than smoking, LOL. I could get by on five or six oz a year. Id LIKE to smoke all day every day, but I'd weigh 300 pounds in three months. Food is not safe around me, high.

What I want is a strain of NO-MUNCHIE weed......

Yes, I got God Bud and Kahuna from BCSeedKing, my first purchased seeds too. Kahuna was very similar to GB, potency and buzz-wise but less flavorful. I'm thinking of trying their Purps and/or Kush and possibly White Widow next grow. Sounds like we have similar taste (in smoke).

Yes indeedy. I was pleased with their WW and for a first-ever grow, it turned out pretty well. It's easy, especially compared with mr. nice Black Widow, which was the hardest for me--

On the other hand, the mr.nice is several cuts above the WW from bcsk in potency and flavor. Their KUSH was fine, also, but again a cut or two below the 'fancy" kushes some floks here have grown.

My impression, now that Ive ordered seeds from mr.nice and a couple other "top" (?) breeders is, bcsk, being a seed HOUSE, producing their own versions of the various strains is damn GOOD, but not "great".

I was loyal to bcsk for...I guess a year or more, running their WW twice, their Juicy Fruit three times, their KUSH once and their Big Bud once. All of them were damn good except the Big Bud, which was dissapointing. I'd advis not bothering with their Big Bud it was commercial grade in potency and despite the name, didnt produce huge yeilds...nor were the buds nearly as big as the WW.

Im very (VERY!!) glad I eventually did venture into the Land of the seed BANKS and ordered stock from the breeders of the Og."famous" strains. In my experience so far, the Super Lemon Haze from Greenhouse Seeds, the BW from mr. Nice are definitely a cut or two above the bcsk stock.

I love bcsk for their prompt, discreet service...and getting a package from Canada is a lot less noticable in a small town post office, Im sure, that those postmarked "the Netherlands", LOL.... but still, in the pursuit of the GREAT strains, Im pretty convinced (now) that going to the Og. breeder of any given strain pays off.

I know a lotta folks say the Cannabis Cup doesnt mean shit anymore, but fwiw, the best weed Ive produced so far was the SLH from Greenhouse. When it first dried, I thought it was fine...but once it fully cured, OMG. If there's a better sativa out there, Id sure like to have it. It just got better and better, once jarred up. On the down side, tho....damn she's a slow gal. I think I flowered her 10 weeks, but only had a few amber trichs. If I grow her again, I'll go for 11 or 12. But....since I dont have much patience, I doubt I'll grow her (or any other) 11-12 week strains. The SLH and the Black Widow are my idea of a "10".

Im rambling....sorry. My point here is, WTF, why not give some top breeders a try? It would give you something to compare the bcsk stock to... and Im betting you will find, as I did, that if you want the REAL strain, ya gotta go to the guy who bred it in the first place!

Looks good Tony. Even if the weights not there, you know the potency is. 3 oz wouldn't last us 3 weeks. Maybe 2 1/2. Christ, we smoke alot.

    Final Report

Everything is now in jars, so I’m officially declaring this grow “finished.” Before I get to the smoke report, I will briefly summarize the grow from seed to jar.

Plants were grown in a double-wide wardrobe under a single 400-watt bulb. I used a Metal Ace MH bulb for veg, and a Hortilux HPS for flower. This was an organic soil grow using a pretty typical soil mixture in 3-gallon grow bags. All seeds were germinated directly in unamended soil in 16-oz cups, then transplanted into the bags at around 14 days. I planted 4 God Bud, 4 Sadhu, 1 LA Woman (feminized), and 1 LA Goddess (LA Woman x God Bud). All germinated, except for the Sadhu which was one for four. The LA Woman was a twin. I later planted more Sadhu and God Bud to make up for the Sadhu no-shows. They vegged for 43 days at 18/6 before flipping to 12/12, at which time I installed the SCROG screen. They all grew VERY slowly during veg, and ended up pretty small compared to previous grows with shorter veg times.

I ended up with one Sadhu, one LA Goddess, two God Bud (one F1 that I bought and one F2 that I made), and two LA Woman (the twins) females. All were harvested at 64 days. Their yields were:

    Sadhu: 17.5 g

    God Bud 2 (F1): 14.4 g

    God Bud 6 (F2): 17.8 g

    LA Goddess: 21.5 g

    LA Woman 1: 11.2 g

    LA Woman 2: 7.3 g

    Total 87.9 g, or 3.2 oz

Generally speaking, it was a very disappointing yield. Because of high humidity, they hang dried for 14 days then cured in ziplock bags for another 5 weeks. Even after all that time, they are still barely dry enough to smoke.

Speaking of smoking, let’s get to the most important part of this report: the smoke (report). As always, please keep in mind that I really suck at describing flavors and aromas.

Now that I’ve been growing actual strains with names, I’ve gotten to the point where they really are all good. I think most people, including me, would be very satisfied with anything that’s been coming out of my cabinet. I have no complaints.

Sadhu remains one of my favorite all-around smokes. It’s reasonably potent, and the buzz is somewhat unique. It has a moderate couch-lock effect, but leaves me quite awake and alert at the same time. Kind of like the best of both worlds, immobile and alert. That’s with just two or three hits. The more I smoke, the more couch-locky it gets. The flavor is mild, kind of non-descript, but nice. Every once in a while I get a hint of some other flavor hiding in there, but I can’t really identify it.

The God Bud turned out pretty much like it did my previous grows, although I didn’t notice the lemony aroma one plant had the first time I grew it. It has that same fruity-sweet-woodsy-with-a hint-of-hash flavor that I liked so much before, although it’s not as pronounced as previous batches. Probably the unfavorable conditions during drying and curing. God Bud remains my favorite flavor-wise and, along with Sadhu, is at the top of my all-time favorites list. As always, the buzz is reasonably balanced, maybe a little more up at first and a little more down later. And maybe it’s my imagination, but this batch seems a bit more potent than earlier ones. Two hits produced a significant buzz.

LA Woman, on the other hand, is a potent, knock-you-on-your-ass kind of smoke. It is definitely not something I’d smoke in the middle of the day, but it’s a perfect complement to a movie in the evening. Flavor-wise, I’d describe it as old school. These buds actually have a little more flavor than the first I grew. It reminds me of some of the good stuff I smoked many years ago. Sort of the classic, non-descript, generic marijuana flavor. Which, considering the alternatives, I am quite happy with.

LA Goddess lived up to my expectations, having characteristics of both parents. Physically, the plant favored its LA Woman mother, very branchy with very hairy buds. Flavor-wise, the smoke favors its God Bud dad with a very pleasant woodsy/hashy taste. Buzz-wise, I’d say it’s somewhere in between. Definitely very potent, and maybe a little less chouch-locky than its mom. I have a few more of these seeds that I will definitely grow again. Since they were produced by a hermie, they should hopefully all be females.

In conclusion, I am very pleased with the quality of this harvest, and extremely disappointed with the quantity. Three oz from six plants is nothing to write home about. I believe using used soil and a ventilation problem early on may be at least partly responsible, but who knows. I would definitely recommend any of these strains though. My conclusion — it’s all good.

For now, I’m taking the summer off. Can’t really grow in my cabinet when the weather is too hot. Which means I have a few months to decide on what I want to try next. I’ve been keeping a wish list based on reports at Growkind. There are so many strains I want to try and, unfortunately, too little time and space. I may be hitting you all up for some advice to help me narrow down my choices. Thanks for dropping by, and look for my next grow log this fall. Namaste.
