Hempy is a bucket filled with mostly perlite. It has a hole drilled a few inches from the bottom to create a resevoir. DWC is a bucket full of water that the roots are submerged in.
one is directly sitting in water, with an airstone providing air for the roots...DWC The other is sitting in a large pot of medium(perlite) and has a root mass at the bottom collecting food and water..The roots get air by drawing it in through the perlite from above (I believe)...Hempy
Hempty But is almost complete of perlite but does it need to be put in a pot mesh?? and cover with that black lid??? and it suposed to be watered manuall?? forgive me for my ignorance but i do hydro and not that good, just want to learn because those results that i have seen wont let me sleep.... i just cant wait to wake up and run to the garden store..
No need for a mesh pot - just plant seedling/cutling in the perlite. A lid isn't necessary, but it helps keep algae/mold from forming. Yes you manually water it.
Think of it as the exact same thing as a pot of soil, but it's perlite instead of dirt. Since the perlite has no nutritional value like soil, instead of having drain holes around the bottom of the pot for excess water, you have one drain hole that is 2" up from the bottom of the bucket, creating a 2" deep reservoir of water/nutrients and of course perlite in the bottom for the plants to feed on. The plants use the water and every couple days you manually water, or top off the 2" reservoir. btw, great pics guys...keep em comin'
CooL Thanks Joe and Happy, that clears up very much my mind....... i"ll do it tomorrow..... and i dont have to mix it with any vermiculite right???? what do you recomend me a 3 Gal or a 5 gal res??? transplanting in perlite is as easy as dirt???? do i have to use the nuts for hydro or dirt??? i"m currently using advance for my hydroponic and i also have some fox farms for an outdoor plant that i"m giving it a chance...... thanks very much guys i cant wait till tomorrow, it will be the first thing i"ll do.......... damnnnnn to bad there are not gardens stores opened 24 hours. i will thanks if someone can show a picture of the 2" hole in the button, to see a bit more clear how is it that u can feed from there
The reccomended mixture is 4:1 perlite/verm. I think some guys have tried 100% perlite with successful results. I used 3.5 gal buckets for my first two, and when I pulled the root ball after harvest there was still plenty of root room left. This time I'm using 1 gallon buckets. We'll see how it goes. I assume that just like soil, the bigger the pot the bigger the plant. Oh...use hydro nutes Good luck :hs:
I have 100% perlite in some pots and 3:1 perlite/vermiculite in others and there is no noticeable difference in the plants. I'd use 3.5Gal or less. 5 Gal doesn't seem to make a huge difference in the grows I've seen. I cloned in an aerocloner and after the roots sprouted I let them veg for 1 week, then transplanted them into the perlite buckets. I use Pure Blend Pro Grow and Root Juice during vegging. For flowering I use Pure Blend Pro Bloom and a high phosphorus liquid guano. Cal Mag Plus is used for the entire grow with every feeding. The drain hole is 1/2" diameter and 2" from the bottom of the bucket. You feed by pouring water on top of the perlite just like soil. :'>
I talked to the guy that runs the hydro shop about it and he looked at me like I was completely retarded. :tard: It was great!!!
Yeah, the guy that runs my "local" shop, after he gave me the deer in the headlights stare, also said there's no way it will work. I SO SO want to just walk in and slap one of my 16" colas right on the counter and ask him to explain that then Negative Nancy.:headbang9: I'm just not willing to go to jail to prove my point.
Hempy Bucket link (Explained by Hempy himself) http://www.hg420.com/showthread.php?t=1800&page=1&pp=10 The link above is where I learned about Hempy Buckets. I've started my first grow with what I call Hempy cups. They are 32 oz Halloween tumblers I bought for cheap. Same principal with 7/16" hole 2" above bottom, but saves a lot on nutes early on because your not filling up a huge reservoir for little sprouts. I'm four weeks into vegging three plants and still have half of my first gallon of nutes (I started by watering some of it down to 1/4, then went to 1/2 and then to full strength so I really am probably into my second gallon). I was skeptical the first couple weeks, but they have quadrupled in size in the last two weeks. When the roots hit the reservoir you will know it! I will have to repot in 2.5 gal buckets at some point, but I hope by then I will know the sex. I don't know if I'll be root bound first, but 4 more weeks will tell. I'd post pictures, but they keep coming out fuzzy. For beginners I think Hempy is the easiest way to go if you want hydro. Hempy claims he got 19 oz off of a 2.5 gal bucket on his best grow.
Yea, because he can't sell you some high dollar equipment if all you need is perlite/vermiculite mix and a bucket!
YeahhhhhHey Happy AND Joe look what i got today i just coulden"t wait , i"m very compulsive , what do u guys think $16.00 for that bag, is te price right?? LOL .yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh let"s get ready to rock....do you guys recomend me to start on perlite from seed or veg in another place and then transplant in a rockwool.. /monthly_2007_10/IMGP0913.JPG.c6afe5ab8963d021d9c877178e3b889d.JPG
