week #3 group shot If anyone's interested I used aniPhone 4's HDR camera option (not 4S) to take the pic.
Another week bites the dust, 4 more to go. This week things have progressed nicely with all thd girls starting to bulk up a bit. I've learned a lot this round & I'm doing 100 times better than I did last time. It's all good, ya know? One problem I'm noticing is that all the plants are rather touchy and the slightest imbalance with regard to Cal, MG shows up PDQ. The other night for example, I watered them with 1 tbsp of epsom salt & molasses / only I mistakenly used too much epsom salt. Fortunately I had only watered two plants before I realized what I had done (yup, gardening stoned again). I decided to let them be & just see what happened. Well, it didnt' take but a few hours before they started yellow on a few of the older/ lower leaves. The next day I gave them a light flush with 1oz.h2o2/gal. The yellowing was halted but I'm sure it's gonna cost me some weight. My guess is all this hyper sensitivity is due to the fact that my soil mix was fucked from the get go. I know where I went wrong and will for sure not make the same mistake again. Onward and upward, as they say. Duc
Looking at your plants and containers/bags I am realizing I need bigger containers for my plants. I am glad you guys post these pics. Looking great at 3 weeks by the way! I will be excited to see some updated pics in the near future :thumbs-up:
Yeah, the pic above (last week) was three weeks after what I call the "final flip" I sexed them by flipping the switch until they showed & then flipped back to 18/6 for two more weeks of vegging. When I flipped back to 12/12 they still had a their bud sites from the first flip for sexing. I had originally planned to veg them for another 3-4 weeks after sexing however the greenhorn in me started to panic about pot size. I chickened out and made the flip after only 2 more weeks of vegging. Fuck me dead, MY PLANTS COULD BE BIGGER NOW!!! :BangHead::BangHead::BangHead::BangHead::BangHead: (one for each plant) YES, I know it was a fucked up way to sex them & yes, I'll have veg cab to sex them in for the next round. The "final flip" was done on Jan 28th.
Dowork, Picking the final pot size was an issue for me to say the least. Because I wasn't able to find 12" square pots locally, I end with lots of wasted space. The 3 gal growbags were a last ditch effort to get some fresh soil under the plant as they're about 5" taller than the pots I was using. For the next round I'm considering using 3&5 gallon airpots or whatever those fabric pots are called. My only real concern is that I'm not sure how sturdy they are. At least they're cheap enough to buy a few samples.
HDR pic with the sun turn on non HDR pic showing the yellowing from the the other day. Check out the monkey fist bud that's forming on this Lemon Thai. It's hard as a fucking rock to.
no kidding. when I can have buds that advanced in 3 weeks I'll be feeling like god. Dude, those are only a week or so ahead of mine(different strain) and mine look like they've barely started to flower.
Thanks for the good vibes man. I suspect that the way I chose to sex the plants has someting to do with their growth rate. When I switched the lights back to 18/6 after sexing, the bud sites that had popped up just sat there, suspended if you will. When I flipped back to 12/12 (after sexing)the bud sites started to grow right away without the usual delay. I think that would explain why they look so far advanced for only 3 & 4 weeks. Sounds like it would be a good idea to start checking trichs well before week 8 rolls around.
Looking good Duc! :good job: The buds are filling in nicely and that ridgeback (monkey fist?) lol is radical looking! A bit of info on the cloth pots you mentioned in an earlier post. I use Smart Pots which are cloth pots. There are several brands out now, and Air Pots are similar, but use a foam or something instead of cloth and have a particular shape, but the idea is the same. More oxygen to the roots and the ability for the pots to air prune the roots is what makes them beneficial. The rootball instead of circling the pot and strangulating itself grows through the bag and the root tips are pruned by the exposure to the air and that causes the rootball to shoot out more fine hair roots creating a fibrous, dense, well aerated rootball that is more efficient at absorbing water and nutrients. I find that I can keep a plant like a mother in a pot for a lot longer than I would be able to in a traditional pot. I use 5 gal Smart Pots for my moms, and they are great. I have one mom that has been in her pot for over a year and is healthy as ever. They have handles on the pots which makes it easy to move them around. The pots are sturdy and machine washable. All around I LOVE them and would recommend them.
In the past, I always had varied results...Mostly because I wasn't in control of all my variables but that's another issue. What I wanted to say is that yes, it must be, at least partially, the way he induced flowering to check sex. I know that when I would transplant to new pots and put them in flower right as they get that "growth spurt" from stretching into the new pot, that is when I really saw huge bud growth. It's like the buds fed off that blast of growth. If I overfed my plants N in veg that hurt my flowering as well. There are a lot of factors and when you get most of them right, you get the results you desire. Duc, as for your plants, they look great. I honestly may take my 14" pots and place them into 5 gallon buckets (pot in pot method) and grow these things like monsters. You seriously gave me some great ideas here for containers....never realized how much space I lost with a round container, such a simple concept :BangHead: i'll be looking for square ones now lol!
Duc- devil's advocate here. but methinks 5 gallon pots in your space would be overkill. With a little practice you can get similar plant size to what you have now in 2.5 gallon square pots. These plants run about 2-2.5 zips. All in 2-3 gallon pots.
Thanks for the scoop on the Smart Pots Ras. I like the idea of having handles on the pots. At least every other day I like to take the plants out for inspection, not having handles on the 3 gal bags I'm using now. How messy are the smart pots when it come time to water the plants? I'm thinking that water will run out all of the place .. ResinRubber, I see what you're getting at man, Yeah I agree that 5 gal pots are a bit much for my space. Although one good thing about having lots of pots is that I have lots of options. For instance if I end up with fewer females than expected, then using 5 gal pots and vegging them longer may make sense. If on the other hand I have a lot of girls, smaller pots would be in order.. OR are you suggesting that it would be wiser to just go with growing a more plants and saving the extra veg time? Thanks everyone for dropping in asssit:
Exactly. Unless you're in an MMJ state and up against a plant count, many smaller well trained plants are generally more efficient that several big plants. Granted, you're not going to be posting any football sized buds.
Wow Duc those plants look absolutely fabulous. I can't believe how nice and big the buds look, how well they're filling in!! Keep on keepin on brother. :thumbs-up:
They aren't messy at all. I put a regular drip catch tray under each one like I would with any other pot and I water like normal. The nice thing about the cloth is that the whole pot breathes so if there is a little water in the drip tray after watering, you can just leave it and it will absorb into the medium and the bag or evaporate without blocking the drain/air holes in the bottom of the pot (cloth pots have no holes) like on a regular pot. The Smart Pots are awesome in my opinion. I love them. They flex and move so you can pack them into your space pretty tight of you wanted to. Pretty good investment at the price. They will last you forever.
