Fill the buckets the same each week do not compensate with less water/nutes for the large root mass growing.

Fill the bucket system before you add any plants to find the level you want. Which should be at the bottom of the vet pot of choice. Than make a mark on the control bucket where you need to fill each week. Makes life a lot easier. :thumbs-up:

I just in the middle of a 12 bucket RDWC build for 2 more pt's. I will snap a few pictures today and post them here. To give more ideas.

Wow, a lot of good info in this thread. I am currently starting some seeds and will be doing my stuff in hempy. After reading this I think I am going to build at least one dwc bucket. I have a question about feeding...

I will be using the useless formula. So lets say I am at first week veg formula which is 5-2.5-2.5-400/600, so I mix the nutes and put them in the bucket. Now the useless formula goes feed, feed and then water.

On the second feed they get the week one 5-2.5-2.5-400/600 ratio again, but, you already have nute solution in the bucket, so isn't adding more nute solution going to change the ppm's of what is in the bucket?

Are you taking ppm measurements of what is already in the bucket and then adjusting the ppm relative to whatever reading you get from the nutes that are already in the bucket?

And as far as heat issues, is this only relative in rwdc (my 1kw's are air cooled)? It seems to be the case because there are no pumps that are directly submerged in a nute solution, only air stones.

And lastly, in a ten x ten room with two 1kw lights, how many five gallon buckets can you run? I am thinking five per light at one month veg and then 8 -10 week flower. Is this about right?

Your mis-understanding the way to use the useless formula....in DWC or RDWC, tables, etc etc...

You would run week 1 in your bucket for 1 entire week.....then empty the bucket, refil with clean water, add some h2o2 , ph down if needed and let that run for 24 hours, come back and add week 2 mixture and let run for the week and repeat the formula that way.....that is how you se his system, not in feedings in DWC or RDWC

The idea of standing water in a DWC setup is ideal for pythium and bacteria if not kept 100% clean at all times, the moving water involved with a RDWC is what makes it ideal to keep a lower temp naturally....most waterpumps are kept in the control ressy/tub and kept in a dark place.....

Right, I get that part, what I am asking is this... Let's say I'm on week one, I add the nutes, two or three days later I have to add more week one formula. What has happened to the first batch of nutes that are already in the dwc bucket, has the ph changed, has the ppm changed? How do you compensate for that with the second feeding, if at all?

Its changed slightly but thats normal, add and adjust as needed

i am setting up a RDWC setup with five gallon pails.

For my 5 gallon pails should I drill the drains into the bottoms or the sides?

i have bulkhead fittings and if i put them in the bottom i will have to put each pail on a stand (i'll use a couple 2x4's on edge is i go that way)

on the side the pails will drain less completely, when it's time for a water change

which one is do you guys think is better, any other pro's and con's either way?

Cons would be height issues when you put the drain on the bottom. Like you said you will have to put them on stands including the control bucket. But if you went the MPB style that would be ideal. I vote to put them on the side. less expensive also. my .02

On the side, just above the bottom "lip". If you measure correctly, you can get the flat side to line up with the bottom of the bucket. It will leave a little bit at the bottom of the bucket.

Hope it works. If not, it's in the DIY section under Hydro

So I set up my two dwc buckets yesterday. When I added my nutes and ph the water it was at 5.8 ph and 635ppm. This morning when I checked it shit is starting to happen. My ph was at 6.8 and my ppm was at 605. Seems to me that the plant ate a little because the ppm went down. But wtf is my ph climbing like that? I ph it back to 5.8 this morning and I am going to check it again at next lights on.

When I initially watered everything I had 20 gallons of plain, un ph water in a tote that has several air stones in it. It had been bubbling for over a week. I took the water from that and put it into the dwc bucket (5 gallon bucket filled to about 4.5 gallons), added my week one useless formula at full strength and then ph to 5.8.

These plants, both hempy and dwc, are by far the worst looking plants I have ever grown too btw! I must be doing something wrong!

After mixing your nutes, do you allow it to sit atleast 24 hrs.?

  18. Midnight Garden

No, straight into the bucket. I read that in the useless formula, guess it's there for a reason huh? I have a batch now that is getting settled for 24 hours like the instructions say, when all else fails RTFM!!! But why should it matter though, I don't get it.

I don't remember specifically why it drifts (buffers?), but it does.

I let mine sit amin. 24 hrs.; sometimes days and then adjust when ready to use.

    Your running it wrong...

take your water.....NO nutes......add your desired amount of ph down ....let it sit for a few hours....THEN ADD YOUR NUTES.......and then let that sit for 24hours BEFORE you check the PH.......then adjust from there

You got it assbackwards.......but your close

Good luck and i know for sure youll be good to go after you do it correctly
